So I shared alittle bit on my recent diagnosis the other day. But for those that don’t know. Tuesday April 30th was a normal day at work until I started vomiting after hitting a pothole in the road. I had noticed something slightly off for a couple months but had never thought of it and just chalked it up to me being a guy and doing something dumb. I genuinely thought I had a virus as I was sick the weekend before. After going to the walk in I was sent directly to the emergency room where people where being very apologetic and sincere for no reason. Not telling me much other than I was sick. I was scheduled the next day with oncology and was givin the news that I had a very high chance of having testicular cancer. Regardless it was a tumor. I underwent emergency surgery the following Thursday and had the tumor removed where I was told it didn’t look very good and I had cancer. Now imagine being 27(2 weeks before your 28th birthday) having already had shoulder reconstructive surgery and a heart attack. Now cancer. I’m not even 30…… I’ll be starting chemo and treatments within the next 2 weeks. As many of you know I have children at home as well and being out of work due to this diagnosis is hard on myself and family. Day 5 Update - Had my first virtual follow up appointment with the nurse practitioner who said I’m right on track and that the pain will likely continue to worsen over the next few days. She also told me there’s no chance of me tapering off my meds anytime soon and actually upped my meds a bit. I did make it downstairs today and walked a few required laps around the house which ended in tears, but hey, at least I did it. I’ll be honest, my surgeon did his absolute best to warn me how difficult this recovery would be but no amount of words could be prepared me for this. Thank god for Ryan and my entire support system for picking up the pieces and keeping me going. Surgery recovery update day 3 - Full transparency, it’s bad. The surgeon and nurses were not lying when they said days 3-5 are the worst. I thought yesterday was bad but it turns out the anesthetic nerve block they gave me right before surgery was still somewhat in effect yesterday. As of today it’s fully worn off and the pain is like nothing I have ever experienced in my life. The pain has me in tears half the time I’m awake but on the bright side Ryan was able to get me through a full shower including washing my hair, I’ve been able to eat and I have the most incredible friends and family who have done nothing but love me and spoil me all week. I know these next two days will likely be just as bad if not worse but I just keep telling myself it’ll all be worth it in the end. This recovery has be walking the very fine line of being thankful for having access to some of the best surgeons in the world as well as the most wonderful support system, and being utterly depressed and deeply angry that my body is constantly deteriorating in different ways each and every day. Disability is a bitch to balance but I’m gonna keep doing it as long as my body lets me. Surgery recovery update! Yesterday was coincidentally the first day of Ehlers Danlos Syndrome awareness month so it made perfect sense that I had a major surgery for a condition caused by my EDS 🤪 Surgery went well. My 10th rib was in much, much worse shape than any of the imaging showed and was fully free floating, pulling ribs 8 & 9 out of place, on top of the cartilage being fractured. A small piece of rib 8 was resected to use as a spacer and a plate was placed down ribs 8-10 to stabilize everything. My experience with everyone at Jefferson was amazing. Even the anesthesiologist had EDS awareness and asked me how I’d like to be positioned during surgery and asked about my neck and jaw instability so she could be extra careful when intubating me. I’ve genuinely never felt safer going into a surgery than I did with this team. The pain is the most intense pain I’ve ever experienced, especially when I’m towards the end of a pain med dose. As long as I don’t move or take a deep breath I’m good, but unfortunately not moving isn’t exactly an option and when I do move the pain is excruciating even with the slew of pain meds I’m on. They say the second and third day tend to be worst and it’s definitely feeling that way so far. Mostly I’m just trying to sleep as much as I can at this point. Hey everyone just wanted to give an update on my mother’s journey having stage 4 lung cancer. Today we found out some really unfortunate news which is she will not be receiving the trail drug. It’s pretty heart breaking as that was one thing that was giving me faith in managing this disease to put it into remission. Today my mother has undergone her first immunotherapy treatment which will be the first of many. Since we are no longer able to get the trial drug we are desperately searching for an alternative to help prolong my mother’s life. We are still waiting for UC Davis cancer center to give us the verification for a second opinion and the wait is tearing me and my sister apart but we are trying so hard to keep our faith and positivity. My mothers GoFundMe is still active and we are trying to raise money to help with the added medical expenses such as travel to outside hospitals as well and getting high dose vitamin C infusions. If anyone has the capacity to help my mother along this journey please consider donating to this beautiful soul.
