First EPIC Camping 🏕 Trip Part 1 - For our first camping trip we started out with something easy, as we camped on my dad’s property near where I live. To begin the day we started off with one of my favourite hikes to Balancing Rock 🪨, which is near where we were camping. This is an intermediate level hike, not too hard but has some challenge along the way. This isn’t a designated trail, as most of it was us following deer trails to get to where we needed to go. Some students asked if I knew where I was going, as they felt like we were bush whacking a bit because of the some of the brush we had to go through. This is a hike I try to do once a year so I have a good idea of where everything is and where to go. I had a nice close call with a rattlesnake, as I stepped right beside one and it began to rattle at me. Got my heart pumping pretty good as I jumped away from it. Most of the students found it quite fascinating as many of them have never heard a rattlesnake rattle before and some had never seen one before. We made sure to not bother the rattlesnake and keep our distance and continue along. We kept tracking along until we across some pictographs, before we had to switch back and make a turn back towards balancing rock. Then we finally made it to balancing rock and had a beautiful view of the entire valley. We ate snacks and relaxed gear for awhile before heading back down the mountain. The way back was much easier, as we could go straight down and walk along the neighbouring vineyard, which saved us a lot of time come back. It's been a minute since I've gotten to do some wildlife shooting but these last couple of weekends have worked out in my favor. The Kestrel was one of a mated pair at a park I've seen them at many times but are typically out of range for good close ups, so I'm very happy to have found their little hidey-hole and gotten some tree shots of them. They hover very well which makes some shots doable in flight, though I don't show that here. I also caught the one barn swallow out on the plants in the afternoon sun at this spot. The Osprey and barn swallows in the bird house were at @johnheinznwr and in fact, I caught a dance between an Osprey and a Bald Eagle. The Phantom of the North After spending a few days in search of this majestic bird, I lucked out on my last evening at Sax-Zim Bog. Just like a storybook ending, night was quickly approaching as I drove down a dirt road with not a single other person around. I caught sight out the passenger window just as I passed it by. I parked, quickly grabbed my gear and started snapping a picture immediately fearing it flying away like the phantom. Just a squirrel. The animal I see most often while walking in the woods in search for “more interesting” animals. I usually never think twice about keeping my camera holstered when I see a squirrel. On this occasion at a feeder off a trail in the Sax-Zim Bog, I decided to get some shots.
