April + May have been BUSY in the garden. Like spending 6-10 hours outside every Saturday and Sunday it isn’t pouring (and sometimes when it is.) Like watering, weeding, and sowing a few seeds before dark during the week. Like drinking coffee outside in the mornings squinting at various corners of the yard — plotting. Like multiple trips to the nursery and hardware store. Like dragging around bags of mulch, gravel, compost, potting soil (at least that one’s easier to carry, hallelujah). Like having a deranged google search history of “zinnia seedling vs weeds” “tiny bees on bee balm” “anti-siphon vacuum breaker rain barrel what is it adapter.” This isn’t complaining — this is the part of gardening I love: the vision, the creating, the hard work to get it started, the hope and high expectation. The hard part? Staying motivated, consistency, dealing with inevitable failure, realizing my grand vision was impossible because a plant needed more light, or less water, or I pruned it wrong. But this year, I’m realizing I’m learning from past mistakes and people more knowledgeable than me. And I’m feeling more motivated and excited for what’s to come, all with the understanding that it may not work out or look like what I envisioned. So, bring 👏 it 👏 on 👏 #plantlady #gardendc #dcgarden #urbangarden #garden #gardening #instagarden #garden101 #mygarden #organicgardening #greenthumb #gardenadvice #gardentips #gardeningtips #zone7b #zone7bgardening

Alongside all the flowers we’ve planted well have a huge bed of corn, tomatoes, lettuces, peas, beans, peppers, celery… the list goes on. Garden 101 Home Made Garden Remedies! Our Marley Bleu suffers from seizures and a lot of times they come about after taking his leisurely walk around the neighborhood. I can not always catch him when he smells or licks patches of lawn. As a result of the products people choose to use for weed killing, fertilizer or bug repellent..he has seizures ... I never use any commercial products for this reason...instead I make my own... Here are 3 simple to make home made remedies for a fertilizer, weed killer and bug repellent! 1) Weed killer: In a gallon of distilled water add 1 cup of table salt, stir to dissolve. add 2 tablespoons of Dawn dish detergent. Mix and add to spray bottle. Stubborn weeds may need to be sprayed 2-3 times. 2)Fertilizer: Easy enough for me!... I use the shells from my hens and after accumulating a dozen or so I rinse and thoroughly dry them before I crush them down to powder...scatter around the base of your plants. The egg shell will leach calcium into the soil ( think lime!) 3) Natural Bug Repellent:In a spray bottle add 1/4 Cup Apple Cider Vinegar, 1/4 cup water and about 40 drops of Rosemary oil. Shake well...safe around my girls and Marley... mosquitoes hate the smell of rosemary!! *Truth be told, I very rarely use any weed killer as I learn to live with them, but for stubborn ones I pour hot water on! *The egg shells are a tried and true fertilizer in addition to anything I may compost. *The best thing I ever found effective for mosquitoes was the Rosemary spray. I am not a fan of citronella ( can you say headache!!)... Let me know how they work out!! Enjoy your great outdoors!! #marleybleugeneral #mbgeneraletsy #homemadefertilizer #homemadeweedkiller #homemadebugreppelant #garden101 #Simplelife #backyardliving

Learning moment: Initially, I was delighted to find one of my rose bushes producing 2 dramatically different flowers! I thought it was the incredibly cool and whimsical, but then I found out I’m a sucker. And so is it. Meet Dr. Huey. Apparently many roses, including mine, are grafted onto the rootstock of a resilient variety called Dr. Huey. A vigorous rose with a penchant for drama, Dr. Huey will sometimes send up sucker canes of its own, which takes away energy from the grafted rose. I had known to keep an eye out for suckers, but the rose I inherited was unhealthy for a long time, so I thought it was good to encourage new cane growth. I actually like Huey’s color and thought about just letting him do his thing. Unfortunately, as a sucker, he’ll take the life out of my grafted rose. Huey is also a solo bloomer and prone to pest and disease, making him not very attractive after his one and only flush. So, per the Internet’s advice, Huey’s suckers will be forcibly removed via roughly ripped from the rootstock. I’m still a little torn. I like the red and I admire his spunk. And then reading the internet’s disapproval of Huey made me feel real dumb after being so charmed by the discovery. But I can still appreciate the undeniably magical feeling when a plant does something that surprises you — even when the red blooms are a red flag. It’s all part of what I love about gardening: learning and taking it all in stride. And if I know anything about Huey, it’s that he’s a tough little sucker that I’ll likely see again. #drhuey #graftedrose #rosegarden #rosegardening #rosesofinstagram #rose #instarose #rosestagram #roseblooms #springflowers #flowergarden #cottagegarden #cottagecore #plantlady #gardendc #dcgarden #urbangarden #garden #gardening #instagarden #garden101 #mygarden #organicgardening #greenthumb #gardenadvice #gardentips #gardeningtips #zone7b #zone7bgardening

What is an Umbel? I’m asked this often, but as a garden coach, that’s exactly what I wanted! Chances are, you’ve seen an Umbel before. Often a frothy mass of small white flowers that wave aloft over ferny green foliage. If you’ve seen flowers on dill, carrot, parsley, celery, coriander/cilantro, parsnip, cumin, or Queen Ann’s Lace - you’ve seen an umbel! All are known as umbellifers, characterised by the formation of their flowers in umbels (meaning umbrella-like), a flat-topped inflorescence supported by a pedicel (a stem supporting a flower or seed), which all originate from the same point on the main stem. Swipe to see a parsley umbel! 📷 : @sar.cat.photo 🔗 : @whatkaitmakes (love it so much thank you!) • #umbelgardens #gardencoach #smallbusiness #chattanooga #umbel #themoreyouknow🌈 #garden101 #gardening #kitchengarden

I harvested my red potatoes today and came in close to 32 pounds. I had to pull these a week early because all the rain brought fire ants into my bed. 🐜🐜🐜 Fire ants feed on potato tubers, causing potatoes to rot underground. (I know from experience, and it's awful to go to pull up your harvest and it's a mushy mess.) Since I avoid chemical sprays and powders in my garden, and some plants were already dying back - a sign it's time to harvest - I decided the best option was to get them all out. I didn't lose any reds to UV exposure this year, which is good news! My tip for this is to watch for when your potato plant starts to flower! The flowers mean that tubers (baby potatoes) are forming underground. THIS is when I add more dirt, because as the tubers grow, they'll displace dirt and have a higher chance of getting sunlight. Adding dirt at this point always helps prevent this for me. 🌱 My white potatoes will be ready in a few weeks. Potatoes are my favorite thing to harvest, despite being the most labor intensive! Skip the kettlebell, and turn over a potato bed. 🥵💪🥔

Blue Lake Bush Beans are coming in nicely! I grew these plants from seed and they're one of my favorite varieties of green beans because they: 1) are stringless 2) grow in a bush instead of trellis 3) yield a lot of beans! If you're looking to get a full meal's worth at each picking, I'd recommend doing 10-12 plants. I just did 5 this year and have to wait a little to collect enough. They have a great flavor and crunch and don't take up too much space. Pack them close together because when they start growing on the stalk, you can lift the entire bush up to search for beans. It is fun to do!

I maxed out my garden bed space (🫣) and decided to try out grow bags. All of my squash this year are in these 7-gallon grow bags. They were really affordable and easy to add more/less for someone that is looking to garden with limited space or budget, and they're depth allows for great root expansion. They don't take up much room either. I used a cotton burr compost and organic raised bed soil blend to fill these, just like my raised beds. I'll have to spread these plants out as they grow more, squash get HUGE, but I woke up to the most beautiful blooms on all of my plants this morning. 🥹 Some even have a few baby squash now.

It was wonderful to see so many Australian plants on display at this year’s @melbflowershow! From Emmaline Bowman and Liam Riley’s multi-award winning ‘Through the Looking Glass’ garden to Phillip Withers and Fiona Brockhoff’s extraordinary collaboration ‘Salt’, we saw native and indigenous plants step into the limelight. @melissakinginthegarden shares what she learnt from the gardens this year: 🏡 When you grow Australian plants you’re working with the environment rather than against it and among other things, that often means less water use. 🏡 Native plants attract and provide habitat for our native birds and animals, from nectar rich flowers for birds to feast on to prickly little shrubs that provide habitat. 🏡 Native plants can be used beautifully and creatively in modern design. Don’t just confine them to bush-style gardens. 🏡 If you’re lacking space, there are lots of compact growing natives that are perfect for pots. 🏡 If you’re still hung up on the view of native plants as straggly and ugly then check out the huge range of garden-worthy natives now available with showier colours, bigger flowers, more compact habits and longer flowering forms. Happy Gardening! ~ Melissa King . . . . . #nativeplants #nativegarden #australiannatives #gardendesign #gardentips #gardenadvice #gardeninspiration #garden101 *Images courtesy of @melbflowershow

Happy Sunday everyone ❤️ Beautiful St Joseph lilies in my garden 😍 These plants produce five-inch funnel shaped flowers brilliant red, with white striped petals on 20-inch stems, and as many as four stems produced from mature plants each bearing four to six fragrant flowers. Even the 25-inch-long slightly arched foliage is handsome. The leaves are dark, green and may be tinted with bronze in full sun. The name Saint Joseph Lily was given to the plant because in the Gulf Coast region where it is more common, it usually flowers by March 19, on the feast of Saint Joseph. In our Tulsa zone, it flowers in late April to mid-May around Mother’s Day, depending on its site exposure. The plant's Latin name, Hippeastrum xjohnsonii, honors, Arthur Johnson, an English watchmaker who is credited with creating this first hybrid in 1799. Johnson crossed H. reginae, the queen amaryllis of Peru, with satiny red petals with a Brazilian species, H. vittaturm. The latter parent contributed its cold hardiness, its multiflowered umbels of trumpet-shaped, white striped petals and its tolerance of clay soils. #lilies #amaryllis #springtime #texas #houstongardening #zone9garden #redflowers #myflowers #mygarden #iloveflowers #ilovegardening #myflowergarden #Lily #lovely #gardenersworld #garden101

Living soil is KEY to growing great food and having a productive garden. Fungi in your beds and by your plants is a reliable indicator of biologically active soil! Let these mushrooms be, as many fungi-plant associations are beneficial. These fungal networks can grow, spread, and collect nutrients. Disturb the soil as little as possible. ❤️🌱
