Folkloric Film recommendation time! What happens when two men and a boy in a drunken stupor make a doll to "help their needs"? One word: chaos. Let me present to you the movie Sukkubus - den Teufel im Leib from 1989. This movie is full of folkmagic, and some of you who work with traditional witchcraft might recognise some of the magic in this film. Two herders and a boy goes to the Black Mountain in the Alps, a place inhabited by strange forces, with their cattle, and even though they take their precautions and protect themselves with prayers to God and folkmagical spells, then one night while drunk the two herders make a doll that suddenly comes to life as a succubus. The demon causes absolute hell for the men and the boy, and only one survives to tell the tale and get help. La Llorona (2020) is a Guatemalan film that grapples with the legacy of the genocide against the Maya people, which is a history that I knew nothing about. This film is so haunting and beautifully made. More people should see it. I loved the way the film focused on the women: not just the victims but those who turned a blind eye to the massacre as well as those who feel helpless to make things right. See it. Po akom horore si sa cítil ako vygumovaný? IN THE EARTH (2021) Mladý vedec sa spolu so správkyňou parku vydajú do lesov nájsť jeho stratenú kolegyňu. Najprv ich niekto napadne a zbije, potom sa stretnú s čudným chlapom, ktorý uznáva prírodu ako bytosť s menom Parnag Fegg až sa dostanú do tábora vedkyne snažiacej sa nadviazať komunikáciu s prírodou vedeckou metódou. Ide o veľmi osobitný a totálne „iný“ pohľad na folk horor. Rozhodne sa mu nedá ubrať fakt, že ide o dielo s vlastnou tvárou a originálnym až artovým podaním. Snímok je mimoriadne atmosferický a ku koncu až psychedelický, čo môže spôsobiť pocit, že divák prešiel „brainwashingom“. Práve tá „psychedelická“, až experimentálna časť môže niekomu rušiť film a iného, naopak, k sebe prikovať. Pripomínalo mi to filmové spracovanie (ALEX GARLAND) románu od VanderMeera ANNIHILATION. 🚨 Spoiler-Free Movie Review 🚨 – ‘The Feast’ In this year of gastronomically titled films, ‘The Feast’ (not to be confused with the forthcoming ‘The Menu’, and next year’s ‘The Indigestion’) is, aptly, a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Opening with the soothing natural sounds of birdsong and lamb bleating juxtaposing with the industrial scream of heavy machinery, the scene is seemingly set for an eco-themed clash between these two elements. And while true, there is a lot more going on under the earth of this tale. But with a narrative that moves as sedately as the Welsh landscape, you will need to work hard for your reward of the inevitable Grand Guignol dessert. Standing as a monument to opulence in the middle of the Welsh countryside, the home of MP Gwynn and his family is the scene for an evening dinner of fine dining and land development deals. Preparations are underway for the festivities with hired help, Cadi (Annes Elwy) being simultaneously patronised by the privileged family and rich guests whilst also taking a curious interest in the property. As the night progresses, things take a turn for the sinister with the guests too preoccupied with discussions on fine art and vintage wines to notice the stranger in their midst is very much one with the nature they are looking to destroy. Folk horror in film has been undergoing a much-welcomed renaissance as of late, with the likes of ‘In the Earth’, ‘Men’ and ‘She Will’ adding new scratches to this ancient but beautiful oak. And ‘The Feast’ is another fine addition to this recent trend, with director Lee Haven Jones both respecting the traditions of classic folk horror storytelling (the perils of messing with the natural order, ‘The Rise’ – a typically hallowed area of land that is spoken of in whispers) yet providing a new aesthetic to the proceedings ⬇️ [Review continued in comments] ⬇️

'You Are Not My Mother' produção irlandesa que é uma mescla eficaz, com uma trama carregada de traumas psicológicos que gradualmente vai se transformando em violência e psicopatia. O longa começa com uma introdução misteriosa e sombria. Um carrinho de bebê com um bebê gritando fica no meio de uma estrada a noite. Uma mulher se aproxima e rola o carrinho para a floresta, onde ela remove o bebê e coloca no chão e acende um anel de fogo ao seu redor. O bebê chora com o calor do fogo a espreita. Nada disso é explicado, culminando um mistério que paira até o terceiro ato. É interessante como narrativa de 'You Are Not My Mother' carrega um drama pesado e retrata de maneira eficaz a claustrofobia dos segredos de uma família, principalmente para a protagonista Char que não tem ideia do que está acontecendo, e aos poucos vai entendendo que todo mundo está escondendo algo dela, algo tenebroso a ver com seu passado. Imagine que toda a sua vida é baseada e construída sobre invenções e meias verdades... Bem, o plot aqui é baseado nisto, com elementos muito bem executados do 'folk horror'. Existe outras problemáticas bem aprofundadas como os danos psicológicos causados pelo abandono paternal que consequentemente gera precedentes para outros danos como a depressão e o bullying. 'You Are Not My Mother' é um longa denso com um ótimo uso das câmeras em volto dos personagens e dentro da casa dar Char. Os personagens sempre aparecem por reflexos no espelho ou esgueirando-se nos recantos da casa. E isto, causa uma sensação de claustrofobia e perigo. A fotografia é um tanto dessaturada o que casa com o tom sombrio e melancólico do longa. 'You Are Not My Mother' é um baita horror dramático com elementos psicológicos que usa bastante do 'folk horror' para desenvolver sua atmosfera. Uma boa pedida para os fãs do gênero. Horror diferentão!! Ben Wheatley tinha dirigido o diferente e aclamado Kill List, filmaço que mesclou com maestria o folk horror com thriller que conquistou grande parte do público fã de gênero. Agora em In The Earth ele nos apresenta um horror no mínimo, inusual. Trazendo uma realidade próxima dos nossos dias, sobre um vírus que tem devastado o mundo, associando ao mistério e ficção de uma floresta onde coisas estranhas começam a acontecer afetando o psicológico e a vida dos que ali estão. Ben Wheatley também trás um pouco do folk horror e momentos de horror mais gráfico, utilizando-se de bons efeitos práticos, e não somente isto, a tensão e a mitologia criada aqui provoca uma enorme sensação de estranheza ao espectador. A todo momento ficamos nos perguntando o que tá acontecendo, e nos assustamos tanto pelas situações apresentadas como pelo comportamento estranho dos personagens. Em Kill List era notório o desenvolvimento muito bem apresentado das emoções dos personagens, e aqui não fora diferente. E isto é o que torna o horror criado por Wheatley tão perspicaz e diferente. Nikolakakis é perspicaz em sua direção, pois Entwined tem uma estrutura e um tom peculiar que faz parecer que estamos vendo algum conto folclórico da mitologia grega. A abordagem intimista e bastante alegórica, nos deixa próximos do que vimos em "Mãe!" do Aronofsky. A película se desenvolve de forma lenta, mas que prende muita a atenção, conforme o passar do tempo percebemos que algo está muito errado e essa sensação fica cada vez mais crescente. Entwined mostra que nem tudo é o que parece de uma forma bem estudada e marcante, com traços fortes de horror psicológico o longa consegue nos envolver na história dos personagens de forma única. As atuações estão maravilhosas, destaque para performance de Danae (Anastasia Rafaella Konidi), que evoca uma estranheza efetiva, que envolto ao cenário atmosférico da cabana na floresta densa, Danae se apresenta quase como uma espécie de ninfa ou deusa. E isto, é bastante acentuado através da iluminação e aurea clara das vestes de Danae, que é contrastado com a de Panos, que parece estar sempre nas sombras de suas roupas de cores apáticas. Com traços fortes e marcantes sobre Wicca, percebemos o quanto os elementos: terra, água, fogo e ar são presentes no filme, o quanto são importantes para o desenrolar de toda a história, se prestarmos atenção o fogo foi um dos mais reverenciados no longa, na crença pagã o fogo e a água são os elementos básicos com os quais tudo foi criado, também tem forte referência a Árvore da Vida que é um símbolo sagrado da criação, fecundidade e imortalidade. Ela representa a ligação entre céu, terra e submundo, essa referência fica bem nítida na película. Entwined é um conto de fadas com uma trilha sonora elegante, fotografia de tirar suspiros e uma cabana sinista, imersa a segredos além da ciência humana. Um folk tale que fala de amor, vida e morte. E o quanto essa tríplice é substancialmente poderosa na essência de toda existência.
Sator é um folk horror engenhosamente imersivo e morbidamente obscuro. Escrito e dirigido por Jordan Graham, a qual também é responsavel por quase todos os aspectos técnicos do filme. Sator é mais uma obra completamente autoral, e que levou 5 anos para ser produzida. Geralmente esse tipo de trabalho pessoal é bastante significativo e possue um tom minucioso, uma espécie de assinatura que só vemos em filmes mumblegore, como em The Witch de Robert Eggers. Em Sator, Graham evoca algo muito íntimo, ele associa algo muito pessoal às convenções do folk horror para criar um quadro profundamente amedrontador. Graham usa a escuridão densa da floresta quase como um artifício manual, sua habilidade na abordagem de som e visual é genial, parece que estamos sendo engolidos pela imensidão da natureza, e seus terrores da noite. Já não bastasse esse horror tangível da natureza, somos transtornados assim como Adam por sussurros intermitentes de um idioma estranho de arrepiar até a alma. Graham alterna a proporção e cor de tela, essas mudanças tem um significado importante para a leitura de Sator, e Graham também adiciona filmagens caseiras em momentos chaves. O uso dinâmico da câmera é outro ponto interessante. Em suma, a qualidade estranha na estética de Sator é outro fator autoral que Graham fez questão de assinar em seu filme. O terror em Sator é algo muito elementar, tudo é estruturalmente combinado para minar uma experiência verdadeiramente de terror. Sator é descrito como uma entidade onipotente por Nani, a qual tem o dom da psicografia, e isso é um ponto chave na construção da mistica envolto da entidade onipotente. As histórias sobre Sator são contadas em fitas cassetes durante toda a película, o que é um tanto peculiar e cria uma atmosfera de suspense. Os escritos e gravações em que Nani recita uma espécie de escrito sagrado da entidade, é extramente assustador! Das poucas interações com Sator que o filme nos proporciona é um puro terror de empregnar até a fundo nossa mente. Sator é de longe um clássico instantâneo do folk horror. Graham dar uma guinada interessante dentro da convenção, tornando Sator uma obra prima.

Sinopse: Segue um agrimensor em uma tarefa para medir uma floresta antiga para um desenvolvedor, mas logo perde a razão em um ambiente sobrenatural que tem seus próprios planos. Without Name é um exemplo quase perfeito de folk horror! Seu protagonista (Eric), um cara comum da cidade que viaja para um local isolado e profundamente estranho; os habitantes locais parecem nitidamente hostis, e demonstram crenças dramaticamente divergentes das de Eric. Logo, o conflito, eventos e forças além da imaginação passam a tomar de conta de toda história. O que é fascinante sobre Without Name, que ao contrário de muito folk horror por ai, é que não parece haver antagonistas ou pessoas "pagãs" que adoram algo e cometem atrocidades em prol (p. ex, não há ilhéus que sacrificam seres humanos como em O Homem de Palha). Aqui, é simplesmente a própria natureza que é assoladora, amedrontadora e feroz. E Finnegan é simplesmente brilhante em apresentar a floresta como fonte de ameaça por si só: as árvores balançando e quebrando ao vento parecem de fato uma força sensível comunicável, a qual podemos sentir sua indiferença em relação a qualquer presença que não seja da sua própria natureza. A abordagem de som e visual passa essa consciência para o espectador de forma perturbadora e atmosférica. Somos tão arrastado para a imensidão escura da floresta como Eric é. Afinal, uma floresta bem filmada pode ser tão assustadora quanto o mais obscuro pesadelo. (Blair Witch que eu diga). Esattamente come in "Trinity", la cui storia si basa sull'esperienza di vita vissuta dal regista come sopravvissuto a degli abusi sessuali da parte di esponenti del clero, anche in "Seeds" il regista ha sentito il bisogno di "inserire" una parte di se stesso partendo dalla storia di due genitori in lutto. C'è una parte nel processo di elaborazione del lutto che è surreale...sembra quasi che i due stiano impazzendo. . 🍏Il regista, infatti, ha utilizzato queste emozioni per raccontare la storia di Macha (Emma MacKenzie), una madre in lutto, preda di visioni. Suo marito Andrew (interpretato da Patrick Bracken) viene chiamato ad indagare su un culto che viene professato nel New England. Il leader del culto sembra essere deceduto in circostanze misteriose e devono trovare un sostituto. Il culto esalta le proprietà magiche che si trovano nelle mele e alle quali sembra sia interessato, per motivi molto più redditizi, anche il cardinale Sinibaldi (interpretato da Kip Weeks, che è anche uno dei produttori del film). Il cardinale manda un sacerdote, padre Tom (David Graziano, già visto in "Trinity"), per incontrare i due coniugi.
