We’re building our veggie farm on land that had been neglected for a decade and over grazed for decades before that. It has clay so thick you can mold with it. This, plus our usually dry climate, is a lovely condition for thick, resilient, prairie grasses with a shallow but strong root system. They pop up through just about anything and create a choking and messy environment for all my veggies. This block has been covered with a silage tarp for 1 full year. And I think, it worked. Not only are all the grasses and ‘weeds’ dead but they are already half decomposed! This block will get planted with a cover crop with deep roots to help break up some of that clay and add more organic matter to the soil. But I have two more blocks, just like this one, ready for tarp removal and bed building. That means, lasagna beds with brown paper and about 4” of compost. I’m excited to see the difference in weed pressure between these three tarped blocks and the ones I already have in production that were not tarped. Farming looks like a lot of computer work today. Before we get busy preparing the fields for spring there's a few exciting projects we need to wrap up first. Recently, we pulled tissue samples from our heifers(which are young cows that haven't had a calf yet) for genetic testing. The tests will help us determine some important decisions for our herd. One of those is testing for the A2-A2 protein. While we know a portion of our herd already presents that trait, we are testing this young group of heifers before they become milk cows. Have you heard of A2-A2? It refers to milk that only contains one type of protein: A2 beta-casein. Most milk contains both A1 and A2 beta-casein protein. Studies show that the A2 protein may be more easily digested by those with a dairy sensitivity, so milk containing both A2-A2 proteins can be enjoyed by a larger population. Having an all A2-A2 herd can help us market our milk differently and make it enjoyable for all. Pretty cool huh? Farmers are using research and technology like this everyday to better the genetic pool, for a more efficient and sustainable future. One of our fields with hugely variable soil types showing winter wheat 'Wolverine' establishing well having been drilled using variable seed rate, precision technology. We conduct surveys on all of our fields to assess things like soil type, depth, stoniness, slopes and moisture content. This enables us to 'zone' the fields. Each zone is then assessed for the potential seed bed quality and plant losses that could occur over winter. The difference in these zones can be used to vary the seed rate around the default rate which is determined by drilling date and thousand grain weight A variable seed rate map is then generated and converted into a digital file that is compatible with GPS kit used with a seed drill controller. #georgewashingtoncarver So much to say about this very interesting man! George Washington Carver who was born into slavery. Carver was an agricultural scientist and inventor who developed hundreds of products using peanuts, sweet potatoes and soybeans. In 1894 Carver became the first African American to earn a BS degree and in 1896 earned his Master of Agriculture degree. He taught poor farmers that they could feed hogs acorns instead of commercial feed and enrich croplands with swamp muck instead of fertilizers. In my opinion, the most important factor for keeping goats healthy and vigorous is keeping a close reign on their parasite load. Quite frankly, the only way to do this successfully and sustainably without causing irrevocable damage through dewormer resistance is to learn to do your own fecals, or find someone who can do them for you. As a biology major, I'm more than comfortable with the science behind doing a successful fecal float and the workings of a microscope, but not everyone feels the same. That's why in our local community I offer speedy fecal results so that our local goat and sheep community can choose science backed data and real time results rather than hunches or scheduled deworming. Why deworm on a schedule when you may not need it? All that causes is residual parasites that are stronger and more resistant to the limited supply of dewormers ; the list of dewormers isn't endless and actually is frighteningly small. Managing your herd that way isn't a matter of "if" you'll run out of effective options ; it's "when". He graduated from St. Charles High School and took a short course at @carletoncollege . For fifteen winters, from the time he was seventeen years old, he taught at Dover-Eyota Public Schools in Dover, Minnesota followed by farming during the summer months. A great student and practitioner of scientific, practical, and up-to-date agricultural methods, Forest became a traveling lecturer for the Minnesota Department of Agriculture and also lectured extensively in New York State and New England. It's no secret that Canada can get just a little bit chilly during the winter months. Ontario producer Christine Lee-McNaughton (@lifeonmanitoulin) often gets asked how they care for their cattle during winter and, since much of Canada's prairie regions are in a deep chill this week, we thought we would share her answer: "Like horses, cattle are grazing animals and are continually eating, whether nibbling grass or being fed a regular diet of hay. This food energy is converted to body heat. 🐂 They also have winter coats, which allows them to survive cold temperatures. Did you know that cattle have summer coats and winter coats? They start growing their winter coat after the summer solstice, as daylight gradually lessens. 🐂 All cattle tend to get rougher hair coats in late winter, but by April to early May, hair coats should have slicked off. 🐂 We also provide them with shelter from the wind and elements. Our cattle have a few favourite spots in the bush where they are protected by trees and a ridge. 🐂 When given the choice, mature cattle prefer to be outside."
