(🇫🇷⬇️) A visit to Nice’s botanical garden last week. This municipal garden, which opened in 1991, is not very well known. There are plenty of other places to visit on the Côte d’Azur for botany enthusiasts, and yet this garden is so rich that it’s well worth the visit! In particular, it features two collections of national interest of Agaves and Salvia (sage) as well as a number of species from Mediterranean climate. Here is my small selection, completely subjective as always 😊 1. Characteristic silhouette of Araucaria angustifolia overlooking a Butia odorata.🇧🇷 2. Cuphea micropetala 🇲🇽 3. Salvia sessei 🇲🇽 4. Araucaria columnaris🇳🇨 10. Acacia pravissima🇦🇺 🇫🇷Visite du jardin botanique de Nice la semaine dernière. Ce jardin municipal, qui n’a ouvert ses portes qu’en 1991, est relativement peu connu. Il faut dire qu’il y a bien d’autres lieux à visiter sur la Côte d’Azur pour les amateurs de botanique ! Et pourtant ce jardin vaut vraiment le détour tant il est riche ! Il présente notamment deux collections d’intérêt national pour les genres Agave et Salvia (sauges), mais aussi plus globalement de nombreuses espèces de climat méditerranéen. Encephalartos lebomboensis レボンボエンシス 超カッコいいんですが、落葉樹ばかりのウチの庭では「落ち葉貯まる」問題で頭が痛いです。 一年中なんだか落ち葉が降り注いで、中央部に積もっていきます。 冬は防寒にいいかもとは言えこの季節、雨が降るたびに湿った落ち葉に覆われているのはなんか心配なので掃除するんですが、思うに彼はアレナリウスやホリダスよりも攻撃力が高いと思います。 血まみれに（やや大袈裟）なって大型ピンセットで掃除完了。 恐怖と痛みで蚊に刺されてるのにも気付かず、今キンカン臭に包まれています。 #encephalartoslebomboensis #エンセファラルトスレボンボエンシス #ソテツ

A relatively rare phenomenon in the genus Encephalartos, shown here is a beautifull variegated Encephalartos senticosus seedling with a striking yellow linnear aurea type variegation. Encephalartos senticosus is a vulnerable species from the southern reaches of the Lebombo mountain range, in northern KwaZulu-Natal, extending north into Eswatini and Mozambique. Encephalartos senticosus grows to a hight of 4m, offsetting from the base. In an area just north of Siteki in Eswatini there seems to be a convergence of Encephalartos senticosus and its closest relative Encephalartos lebomboensis, with all plants north of this convergence being considered as E. lebomboensis and all plants south of that as E. senticosus. At the southern and northern ends of the two species distribution range they can easily be told apart by looking at the cone morphology, senticosus often carrying multiple pedunculated cones, where as Encephalartos lebomboensis males usually only carry a single sessile cone per stem. The cone scales also differ greatly in shape size and texture between the two species. Foraging marsupials, birds and fruit bats eat the covering and discard the hard seeds. Here is an updated photo of the Cycad (Encephalartos lebomboensis) cone from a few weeks ago. The gardener at the Botanic Gardens told me how to determine if the seeds are fertile. Remove the fleshy covering by soaking them in water for a few days 2-3 and then rubbing it off. Then put seeds in a bucket filled with water.
