2024 book #29 Strange Things Are Happening by Richard Norris ๐ง This was an enjoyable listen, especially the first few chapters based in St. Albans when I knew @mrrichardnorris I enjoyed listening to reflections on that time, the lively DIY anyone can be in a band music scene of the time. Toys, the band my brother Simon was part of, are mentioned. I remember sitting round our kitchen table folding and stuffing the record sleeves of their first EP, and I still use the same table daily! Richard was in a few bands there including Innocent Vicars and The Wild Kitchen, with some mutual friends. There were numerous other bands such as Clive Pig and The Hopeful Chinamen, the Tea Set, the Bodies, Manic Jabs. We lost touch and I didnโt keep up with what Richard was doing. Then I heard a track I loved on a compilation CD I had that also included remixes of @portishead and jamiroquai tunes amongst others. The track, Diablo, was by The Grid. I looked them up and realised it was Richard! Musically his career had taken hold during Acid House and it was fun listening to his stories in this book and the number of significant songs heโs been a part of. Weโd reconnected a while back via social media and more recently my son has appreciated feedback from Richard on some of his work as he embarks on his own music career. Funny how those teenage days in St Albans had so much impact and still have a way of revisiting even though I moved away nearly 40 years ago. They were fun and exciting times with so much going on musically - punk, new wave, ska, reggae - lots of live music. Music and art have always been vital in my life. They are the things that help to keep me going, on track. Creativity is essential. Richard says the same in this book too. The way Thorne writes, allows the reader to choose where they sit in this magical world. With lush descriptions that force the reader to slow down and take a break from the every day world. It was a breath of fresh air to see good communication between MCโs. I really liked how Reyna and Kiantheโs relationship was established already and we got to meet them as they were. However, I felt there wasnโt enough depth to the characters for me to care about them, something I need in a cosy fantasy. Iโd say this was in a nutshell, an enchanting prequel. Where clever hints were dropped and themes conveyed to further the plot for the sequel. Itโs a meandering story with pockets of action. As Thorne shares, she was inspired by Legends & Lattes, and this comes across throughout. For me, I think because I love L&L so much, it was a little hard to pull away. But I think those who found L&L too cosy may enjoy this? Maybe my age and coffee addiction is more akin to the Orcs and Thune too? ๐ This is still a story in its own right and has great potential as a series. It didnโt end on a cliffhanger, more like returning for a hot cuppa and catching up with Reyna and Kianthe. Iโm interested to see where book two takes us. I really loved being back in Ingridโs company living her hard, isolated, island life in wartime Norway. Jacobsenโs writing engages the reader with the characters, their isolation and loneliness, hardships, determination, in a direct unsentimental way and through an interesting story. 2024 book #27 Lucy by the Sea by Elizabeth Strout ๐ซ ๐ซ ๐ซ ๐ซ Another good read from Elizabeth Strout about her character Lucy Barton that includes cameos from characters from other stories including Bob Burgess (The Burgess Boys) and Olive Kitteridge. This is a novel set during the pandemic but about family, relationships. A very human story set during a difficult time and written in Stroutโs sparse, less is more, style. I enjoyed this more than her previous novel Oh William! Iโve now read all of Elizabeth Stroutโs books. 2024 book #23 A Month in the Country by J.L. Carr ๐ซ ๐ซ ๐ซ ๐ซ ๐ซ This book packs a lot in to its 100 pages. Itโs a lovely summary of someone remembering a time 60 years ago. Time just after WW1. Time in an unchanged small rural community when things around are changing. Thereโs discovery, love, friendships - both tenuous and strong - art, religion, delicate relationships and lots of unspoken things beautifully described through sparing language. Published in 1980 this was made into a film in 1987 starring Colin Firth, Kenneth Branagh, Natasha Richardson and Patrick Malahide (who seems to play a few Reverends as he was also in the TV adaptation on Middlemarch in 1994). Have you read this or seen the film? 2024 book #21 The Postcard by Anne Berest ๐ซ ๐ซ ๐ซ ๐ซ โ๏ธ This is a highly readable semi-autobiographical novel about a Jewish family almost completely wiped out in the Holocaust. A daughter being told the family story by her mother prompted by receiving a postcard in the first part. The second part is largely based in the authorโs @anneberest research to find the sender of the postcard. Sad, incredible and interesting in equal measures. His first book, Rules of Civility, has been on my to be read list for some time and I opted for an audio version read by Rebecca Lowman. @amortowles is a wordsmith. I lost count of the number of times I had to re-read a sentence and let it settle. 2024 book #17 Horse by Geraldine Brooks ๐ซ ๐ซ ๐ซ ๐ซ โ๏ธ What a great read. Based on the story of famous American racehorse Lexington, set in the 1850s and slavery, racism, Civil War and art. Thereโs an interesting companion story set in 2019 with science and art history themes. Itโs an engaging story with a mix of strong real and fictional characters. This was one of my reading subscription books from @mrbsemporium I donโt think I would have picked up a book called Horse. 2024 book #16 The Satsuma Complex by Bob Mortimer ๐ง ๐ซ ๐ซ Iโve always liked Bob Mortimer and really enjoyed his autobiography And Awayโฆ.. enhanced by listening to him read it. Sadly, The Satsuma Complex didnโt live up to that read. I listened to this read by Bob and by Sally Phillips too. Itโs a bit like being inside Bobโs brain for a few hours or sitting in a pub with him telling a story. It could do with some editing and concision and a bit less predictable story. There were some entertaining bits but having read some great books recently this didnโt hit the mark for me. Had it been any longer I would have given up. Itโs about reciprocity - exchanging things with others for mutual benefit - and gratitude for the things we take from the earth and the desperate need to give back to it, look after it. The chapter titled Collateral Damage about salamanders, their determination and vulnerability, will stay with me for a long time. 2024 book #13 The High House by Jessie Greengrass ๐ง ๐ซ ๐ซ ๐ซ I read this book partly as research. I wasnโt aware this author until recently. The audio version is read by three people. Two of the voices were fine, the third unable to pronounce the letter t which I found a bit irritating ๐ That aside, this is an interesting story about family, a group of survivors amidst flooding and climate crisis. 2024 book #10 The Many by Wyl Menmuir ๐ง ๐ซ ๐ซ I read this as a bit of research. I saw the author was running a residential writing course about writing โseas and treesโ in Cornwall that sounded very appealing. Unfortunately this book has way too many themes (pollution, mass transport, flooding, incomers, child loss) all attempting to be mysterious and with various dream sequences. It ends with so many unanswered questions that it seems like the author didnโt quite know what topic or genre to select. This is a short book. I listened to it on @borrowbox at about 4.5 hours. It travels from London to Bristol to Jamaica and has a great main character - Yamaye. This novel has pace and a strong plot. Intrigue, emotion and strength. A really enjoyable read. 2024 book #6 Priestdaddy by Patricia Lockwood ๐ซ ๐ซ โ๏ธ I picked this book up at my reading spa at Mr Bโs in Bath last March. I have two more to read of the eight books I brought home with me that day. This sounded like an interesting memoir. Some of the writing was poetic, some funny, some more like a stream of consciousness. My overall impression is of it not being in depth enough about the impact or growing up in a religious household, having no real sense of place and home other than numerous rectories, and the rejection of religion.
