Follow up post of the warm season cover crop planting in Kern County citrus. It was planted 50 days ago, and all the way across the drive row but two orchard sprays and harvest traffic shortly after planting killed the covers down the tire tracks. In the future it would be better to try to get it established a month ahead of spraying and harvest. I wouldn’t plant after those activities (which is early May on average) because usually the rain is good and done by then. The good rain we got this spring helped it get established. I wanted to get it done in March but the grower was unable to schedule it for then. I think next time we will try for a mid-March planting. So far I see forage peas, chickpeas, cowpeas, buckwheat, millet, spring oats and sorghum up. People had said you can’t establish a warm season mix in the Bakersfield/Famoso area. This shows it’s possible. Thank you Green Cover Seed for a great seed mix. Things that I’ve observed about growing citrus in this area (zone 9b) are 1: it’s good to get them in the ground as soon as you can. 2: you should protect them until their trunks are about an inch in diameter. 3: once they are established in the ground, they are pretty hardy trees for this region. The first 2 pictures are of the lime. It’s still adjusting to the spot, but it has more flowers than last year. The last 3 pictures are of the lemon, and it’s thriving this year. It didn’t have any fruit last year. We got both of them at same time and planted them in the ground at the same time. #citrus #northerncaliforniacitrus #californiacitrus
