The Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashino 5🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 (definitely) From the start of the book, we were introduced to the killer. This book isn't about who or why. It's about HOW. It's a battle of wits between two geniuses, a mathematician and a physicist. The first to figure it out will win. I haven't read a murder/detective book in a loooooongggggg time. As I browsed the library the other day, I instinctively picked up this one and guess what? I DO NOT regret it. I read it in one sitting (can you imagine it)? Reading this book is a thrill, it reminds me on how much I love mysteries and spilled bl00d of course 😅 i love every bits of the book and if i could give out stars to rate it, all the stars in the sky will be gone. Can't believe I haven't read this sooner omg what did i do with my life #bookstagram #bookstagramjapan #bookstagrammermalaysia #bookrecommendations #bookreview #keigohigashino #thedevotionofsuspectx

Starting this tonight- I did not know it was the 2nd book in a series so I’ll look for book 1 also. Work has been stressful and since hub is back commuting leaving 6:45am and returning around 10 or later most nights so I’m mostly single parenting, and dog raising during the week while working quite intense hours. At night I try to grab at least 30 minutes to read- the past weekend for Mother’s Day I managed to read 2 books and finish one audio book which was lovely. 📚 Book Review: “The Counselors” by Jessica Goodman ⭐⭐⭐✨ I just wrapped up “The Counselors,” on Audible and it’s a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars for me! The story starts off a bit slow, but trust me, it gets better as you dive deeper. Set in a seemingly idyllic summer camp setting (and I do love a good camp setting) , the book weaves suspense and dark secrets perfectly. As the plot thickens, the twists start to really pull you in. A great pick for those who enjoy a thriller that takes its time to unfold. It reminded me a little bit of Pretty little Liars drama- scene was different but similar feel!! Qotd: have you ever been to camp or better yet have you ever been a camp counselor? #bookstagram #bookstagramjapan #BookReview #TheCounselors #JessicaGoodman

Tasaki Ryusei was our main contact person (a bit like a project manager) for the process of making the sankaku ramen bowl with @yabaiyabai__ and @maruhiro.hasami. Chill, enthusiastic, earnest, and attentive, he’s exactly the sort of person you want working on any of your projects.    When we visited Hasami, Nagasaki, last year, he was a superb host — drove us to the kilns and showed us around, took us out for dinner, and made us feel welcome and taken care of. He knows a ton about porcelain but is super humble about it — although he knows so much because he works with artisans all the time, he always insisted that he wasn’t an expert and was learning as much as we were. In short, we just have a lot of respect for the guy.    You can read more about Tasaki Ryusei and the ramen bowl-making process in Volume 02: Ramen. 📚 BOOK REVIEW 📚 If you’re craving an awesome thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat, look no further than “None of This is True” by @lisajewelluk ! From the start , this book hooks you into a web of intrigue and mystery that only tightens its grip with each turn of the page. I knew after I started reading it traditionally that I needed to switch to audible to enjoy on my walks with Ringo. Listening on Audible, with those delightful British accents, truly brings the story to life! 🎧 The podcast element of the book is why I switched to audible to listen mostly because it not only helped drive the plot forward but also offered tantalizing glimpses into the minds of the characters, keeping you guessing until the very end. Lisa Jewell has once again proven herself a master of the suspense genre with this must-read psychological thriller. Still reeling from the ending! ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Days at the Morisaki Bookshop - Satoshi Yagisawa Days at the Morisaki Bookshop by Satoshi Yagisawa follows Takako, a young woman who takes a job at her family's struggling bookstore after quitting her office job in Tokyo. The story explores Takako's journey as she discovers her love for books, connects with the quirky customers who frequent the store, and heals her broken heart along the way. The first half of the book is a delight, with Yagisawa's vivid descriptions of the bookshop and its visitors. He captures the magic of browsing shelves and stumbling upon unexpected literary gems. The writing is whimsical and charming, perfectly encapsulating the cozy atmosphere of a beloved neighborhood bookstore. However, the second half takes a noticeable shift in tone and focus. Instead of the bookstore being the centerpiece, the narrative delves deeper into Takako's relationship with her eccentric aunt, who mysteriously left one day. This transition feels somewhat jarring, as the writing loses some of its earlier enchantment and becomes more grounded in personal drama. While an enjoyable and comforting read, the novel has its flaws. As a male author, Yagisawa's portrayal of the female protagonist occasionally falls flat. Additionally, the writing quality dips in the latter half, lacking the same level of allure as the earlier sections. Overall, Days at the Morisaki Bookshop is a fun, quick, and easy book for those who love bookstores and reading, but it may not resonate with all. Personally, I enjoyed reading a book set in a small area of Tokyo I explored while in Japan. #bookstagramjapan #bookreview #booksbooksbooks #bookworm #bookstagram #bookrecommendations #japanesnovel #bookstagramhay #booklover #books #bookclub

‘Maybe that’s how it always is, I thought—we all just go along, catching glimpses of one another, thinking we know everything.’ I’ve been in a reading slump by choice. I was forced to read again because of connecting flights. This was a great read. I finished this one in five hours (more or less). No, it’s not the same plot as Where the Crawdads Sing. Yes, it was all about scent and more. I want to be as vague as possible with my review, so you’ll have to read it for yourself and find out what is so special about the story. ⭐️:5/5

If you were a reader of the now-defunct food magazine Lucky Peach, Kee Byung-keun’s name will be familiar to you. He was one of their regular Japan-based contributors, penning lush, transportative pieces that made you want to go everywhere he went. His writing revels in the joys of excess. With Kee, more is more is more.    We were extraordinarily lucky to have him on board for this book. What’s his ramen piece about? If you had to ask, we suppose it’s about finding home in a bowl of ramen. But it’s really more of a mood. A vibe. A feeling — that of wandering the streets at 3am in search of something nameless.    You can read Kee’s gorgeous essay in its entirety in Volume 02: Ramen. What’s a book about ramen without some cultural criticism? We asked writer, translator, and academic @wheatfu to write us a piece on ramen, to contemplate how the humble comfort food spread around the world and what it means to slurp up a bowl of noodles. Mike showed us how familiar he is with Japanese pop culture and then some, drawing connections for us that we weren’t aware of before.    Accompanying Mike’s piece is a fabulously complex and colourful illustration by Melbourne-based artist @apple_leow. We can’t really remember what we asked her to draw, but “mandalas,” “EEAAO vibes,” “Tampopo,” and “Blade Runner” were probably part of our ramblings. *waves hands vaguely * Either way, Apple blew this assignment out of the water. We wish she’d make prints of it already!    In other exciting news, Mike’s debut novel, Masquerade, is being published by @tin_house this fall! You should totally pre-order it so he can make bank and then write more books.    You can read Mike’s ruminations on ramen in Volume 02: Ramen. Otro: お茶 (おちゃ) (ocha): La ceremonia de té. Sword & Thistle By S.L. Rowland Why yes, I did just immediately pick the next book up. And it didn’t disappoint! There’s a little more going on in this one but I’d still say it’s cozy. We’re on a quest (for mushrooms) and meet a cast of characters and figure out a mystery along the way. Once again I absolutely loved all the characters and the world just keeps giving. When putting together Volume 02: Ramen, we knew we wanted a piece on the space ramen developed by Nissin. ‘Space Ram’ wasn’t available for general public consumption, so we needed to find some other way of doing the story. Eventually, we figured: what better way than to talk to someone who’s actually eaten it in outer space?    We were connected with former JAXA astronaut @astro_naoko thanks to a friend. Yamazaki is the second Japanese woman to have flown to space; she spent 15.12 days aboard the ISS in April 2010.    She radiated a calmness and competency that put us at ease right away (it’s not every day you talk to someone who’s actually been to outer space!) and was a real joy to speak to. Our interview with her delves into her diet in space — which included space ramen — but also astronaut eating routines and what life up there is like. She was one of our favourite interviewees.    This interview was conducted over Zoom and we couldn’t get our hands on any space ramen, so it was illustrated by our ED @furochan_eats who just wanted an excuse to draw as she’d never do it otherwise.    You can read more about Naoko Yamazaki and her time in space in Volume 02: Ramen. 📕 Mini book review 📕 “Only and Forever” by Chloe Liese wraps up the Bergman Brothers series and it is a bitter sweet end - I waited for this book and Viggo’s story for so long and Viggo and Tallylah’s story is both bittersweet and deeply satisfying. If you haven’t read this series, and are a fan of romance novels, I highly recommend it - this is one series I recommend to almost anyone who will listen! The Bergman family dynamics add depth and richness to the story, and I will so miss all of the characters. The final installation wrapped up a few things also (no spoilers) and it was so lovely to see. It is fitting for “Only and Forever”, Viggo’s love story, to be the last in the series. I will miss this series so much though . #bookstagram #bookstagramjapan #contemporaryromance #bergmanbrothers #chloeliese #bookworm

Sakura season is finishing up - the weather is getting warmer. Swipe for the latest couple images So far I have read 8 of my 24 books (by end of March), and nearly done another listening on audible which I posted earlier. I am slowly working my way through my 24 books around the world in 2024. I’ve just started reading "In Every Mirror She's Black" set in Sweden and written by Lola Akinmade Åkerström a Nigerian author based in Stockholm. My issue is that I do most of my reading at night and am often too tired to focus on anything too literary ;) I am a few chapters into this though and liking it. Doing on audio while walking the dog tends to work better. I’ve been having a hard time focusing lately- perhaps it’s the new school year, and business of that but it’s also that change of season time which can sometimes bring unease. #bookstagram #bookstagramjapan #24booksaroundtheworldin2024 #aroundtheworldin24books #2024readingchallenge #currentlyreading #ineverymirrorshesblack #reading #reader #bookworm #bookshelves

Currently listening to Glory, by NoViolet Bulawayo which has been a bit hard to get into - This is my book for Zimbabwe. It is taking a lot longer than usual - I like it but it is unlike anything I have read before - it is set in the animal kingdom of Jidada. In which the horse is outsted, by his wife, a donkey. Apparently it was inspired by Animal Farm by George Orwell which my son had to read recently for school English class - but when I thought back it means it is more than 20 years since I myself read Animal Farm. #bookstagram #bookstagramjapan #24booksaroundtheworldin2024 #aroundtheworldin24books #2024readingchallenge #currentlylistening #currentlyreading #bookworm

SPRING🌸 Will edit this caption with a review and a rating soon💗😅 Spring means Sakura here! Or is it just for me? The only thing I hate about this season is the hay fever!! I can’t fully enjoy Sakura because of its pollen, which causes endless sneezing, itchy eyes and ears, and coughing.🥲 Been trying to get back to reading but not finding a book that keeps me interested enough to disregard sleep and house chores😂

It's my favourite time in the world!!! It's Review o'clock!!! What is really the purpose of life? - Ikigai by Hector Garcia and Francesc Miralles Book Review on: Book: Ikigai Author(s): Hector Garcia and Francesc Miralles Steam: Nil My thoughts: If you are an ardent follower, you'll know I constantly say I am not a nonfiction girlie, but how I have come to start loving them one step at a time. Anyway, this bookstagrammer once again read a nonfiction and loved it!! The Prologue caused me to ponder for the first time on a question that I had never given cognizance to before: What is the meaning of my life? The book posed the question: Is the point just to live longer, or should I seek a higher purpose? This book helped me see that stress is a major factor in decreasing longevity. Most times, we don't know that we don't know that we need to rest as much as we need work. Getting the balance helps us find our Ikigai. Living an unhurried life is one of the steps to living longer. This book is basically a guide towards living properly. I enjoyed the book and learnt a great deal.😀 QOTD: What genre of book do you enjoy reading? #bookstagramuk #ikigai #bookstagramjapan #bookstagramjeunesse #bookstagramchile #bookstagramnorway #fyp #trend #viral #salad #healthylifestyle #healthyliving #bookstagrammer #bookstagramcommunity #instagram #findingyourself #findingyourpurpose #lifequotes #lifeisgood #books #nonfiction #read #littlefreelibrary #bookstagramfrance #bookstagramfollowtrain #bookstagramfollowloop

Not everyone you collaborate with is destined to become a close friend, but we’re fortunate to call @yabaiyabai__ a dear friend and one of our favourite people around. She’s easygoing and easy to love, but is also serious about her work — a combination that resonates strongly with us.    Also, we love Stacy’s bright, colourful style. More everyday objects should spark joy, and the textile products she makes do exactly that — so why not extend that to vessels we use every day for eating?    You can read our interview with Stacy in Volume 02: Ramen. This book kept me up at night and that is quite the feat. I found it interesting and even though I had the bad guy, and ending figured out, I was happy to keep on reading. The ending seemed a little rushed at times but it was a good pace all the way through. I liked the Canadian references to cities, provinces, and double doubles. When it came to Volume 02: Ramen, it was crucial that we had an article on ramen itself to set the scene and contextualise the subject for the rest of the book — a bookish and noodle-y mise en place, if you will. We needed someone to write an overview on ramen history that would accurately capture its nuances without over-simplifying or resorting to cliche – but also be accessible and entertaining for the average reader. We were looking for someone who would be comfortable cross-checking information in Japanese if needed. Oh, and we needed it to fit a specific word count.    This is a big ask.    Fortunately, our ED had the privilege of being edited by @accidentaltokyoite at her previous job as an editor with @thejapantimes, and knew she was more than qualified for the task. Her work as a journalist and editor is characterised by meticulous research and thoughtfulness, but also a humour that’s necessary to keep a reader interested. We couldn’t have asked for anyone better to write this piece.    Accompanying Claire’s piece are some gorgeous little spot illos by Swedish illustrator Julia Hansson @djuriahansson — there’s a joy and levity to her work that fit perfectly with the words.    You can read Claire’s overview of ramen history in Volume 02: Ramen. Meet Fushicho Karasu @w960phoenix, pro-wrestler and noodle maestro at Kaikarou, a small, family-run noodle manufacturer based in the backstreets of Asakusa. We wanted to know how a pro-wrestler ended up working at a noodle factory, and spent several days at the factory watching him work, and talking to him about his floury exploits.   Kaikarou is a major name among ramen noodle aficionados; but to our knowledge, this is the first time they’ve been profiled in English. We were extraordinarily lucky to have been granted access to their factory. Their noodles are truly remarkable, and we hope our longform profile (print only) does justice to their incredible work and legacy.   You can read more about Fushicho Karasu and the factory in Volume 02: Ramen. We first encountered @fushimic’s writing through their newsletter, hey how are you. A designer by trade, Carina has a keen sense for visual detail and aesthetics, as well as the poetic sensibility to match; it certainly shows in her writing. We loved working with her to craft this beautifully observed, sometimes wry and funny piece, a variant on the ‘That Girl’ – a sort-of-wellness archetype that became popular on TikTok in the last few years.    For this piece, we commissioned Tokyo-based artist @deanaizawa to illustrate That Girl in the Ramen Shop. His wistful watercolours, we thought, matched her piece beautifully.    You can read Carina’s piece in Volume 02: Ramen! Kafka on the Shore 2024/15 People who know me know that I’m a major Murakami fan. I buddy read this book over a month taking a maximum of 2 chapters per day. We had 3 long calls discussing the book. This time around 2 minds and some helpful articles on the internet were at work to decipher all the riddles in this story. Were we successful? I don’t think so... Am I ok with not knowing all the truths about the characters? Well, Murakami has taught me to be complacent with the journey he takes me through rather than questioning the destination! Talking cats, men who can converse with cats, soul swaps, Sardine and Leech rains, characters with peculiar names such as Johnny Walker, and Colonel Sanders, strange prophecies, and most importantly great music references. The author uses all these and then some to build a riveting story. This is the kind of book you read without a rush. When certain tracks were mentioned in the story, I played those tracks while reading. That enhanced my reading experience. I’ve said this before, and I say it again... Murakami NEVER disappoints! #fortunesfool #harukimurakami #kafkaontheshore #harukimurakamibooks #harukimurakamiquotes #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagrammers #bookstagramdubai #bookstagramuae #bookstagrammurakami #bookstagramjapan #bookstagramsrilanka #bookstagramlk

We first encountered ramen maker Takanashi-san through his ramen shop’s Instagram account @young_mishima. It immediately caught our attention: it wasn’t just a feed full of ramen bowls, but interspersed with other fun, joyfully-designed products. Brightly coloured socks. Jumpers with dog cartoons on them. Stickers. It didn’t look anything like other ramen shops.    The other part that stood out to us was that Ramen Young wasn’t located in some hip neighbourhood in Tokyo, which would have fit its aesthetic — it was in the smaller, more provincial city of Mishima in Shizuoka Prefecture. It’s rare to have such design-centric branding for a ramen shop, much less one in a city like Mishima, and we knew we wanted to hear the story of how they got their start.    Photographer @suzukiryuichiro connected us with Takanashi-san, we took a trip down to Mishima, and the rest is history. Friendly staff, great ramen, fun merch — there’s a lot to love about Ramen Young. You can read more about them in Volume 02: Ramen! ED Flory: What’s Baba-san like?  EIC David: He’s like, super chill. He has his own rhythm. He’s the most un-CEO-like CEO ever.    Not all CEOs are made equal, and Baba Kyohei is up there with the good ones. Under his guidance, Hasami ware wholesaler Maruhiro Inc. has become synonymous with accessible and cool products. They really have their finger on the pulse of pop culture and trends in Japan.    Much of that is thanks to their openness towards new ideas and collaborations, something that sets them apart from more traditional porcelain houses in the area (Arita and Hasami). The public park that they built next to their store is a great example — it’s an incredibly welcoming space that anyone would be happy to spend time in, regardless of whether you want to shop for porcelain or not.    Oh, and he spends his lunch hour skateboarding — so the skateboarding dragon on our ramen bowl is in fact inspired by Baba-san.    You can read more about Baba Kyohei in Volume 02: Ramen! 151 Days Later, and a Supermarket Is No Longer Just a Supermarket In the grocery store, where the lights are bright and the produce stacked high A familiar tune loops over and over again while the word “martyr” is its own jingle echoing in my head ◆ At the discount section of the supermarket a package of overripe fruit sits on the shelf red, bursting at the seams and I think of a name robbed of a future extinguished, blooming poppies amidst the grey At the checkout counter, a man asks for a bag and I remember that until a few months ago I hadn't known an entire life could be packed into something so small I wonder what it’s like to walk down the flour aisle and not think how unnatural it is to say the words “flour” and “massacre” in the same breath see a rose and see only a rose instead of a cracked open body flowering red on the pavement ◆ A delivery person steps into the elevator and I catch a familiar whiff of french fries and grease as my mind conjures up the image of a soldier posing for the camera red lingerie in hand and I try to imagine what it’s like to sleep a dreamless sleep where every image isn’t an allusion to death hope crushed under rubble bodies starved beyond recognition names, faces of all ages, but mostly young etched into the contours of my mind Faraway, the old man leans over the counter ice cream cone in hand while yet another image of skin and bone circulates among the masses

Days at the Morisaki Bookshop 2024/08 The protagonist realizes that she has been the other woman in a situationship triangle at the workplace. Overnight she loses the perceived love of her life and, chooses to leave her job as well. She moved into the upstairs of their generationally owned second-hand bookshop. The bookshop is currently managed by her uncle. In her childhood, they had a special bond, and as she grew up she found him to be weird. Even though acclimatizing to the new surroundings initially was challenging, with time she opened herself to the wonderful possibility of being lost in different worlds through books. This book discusses the evolution of human relationships in a laidback still intense and realistic manner. The unique relationship of her uncle and aunt, The intense pain of losing a child that has no expiry date, The power of books to unite people who are meant to be together, And the courage it takes to step out of the place you healed and embrace the unknown, are some of the many takeaway messages for me.
