For those of you who might not know, I (Kat) am a degreed Nutritionist and I practiced conventional nutrition for a decade. The one thing I noticed over and over again especially with women in peri/menopause was that they would come to me, desperate to lose weight, saying "if only I could be thin again everything would be okay" I'd ask them what brought them joy in their life and they couldn't really answer that more than to say their glass of red wine, bag of chips or bag of cookies with Netflix at the end of the day. I realized quickly that if I gave them a meal plan that was all brocoli and baked chicken without address the lack of joy in their life, the meal plan wasn't going to last more than a week or so. It's when I realized that what I loved about food was not whether it was "nutritious" or not...it was whether it was "nourishing" or not. Food is meant to give us not just calories, but nutrients to ensure that our bodies have the nourishment to preform everything we ask of our body AND food in our society also often plays a role in nourishing our soul. There is a way to find amazingly yummy nourishing food that feeds both our body and our soul. We are meant to get pleasure from the foods we put in our body. It isn't found in a diet, it isn't found in eating "fake food" - It comes from moving back to our traditional ways of eating. Farm to Table, Seasonal, Local - these might sound like they are just another trend, however they are a movement back to our roots. The joy that comes from a delicious homemade meal with family, or a wonderful soup that feeds your soul on a cold winter day, or the light energy that comes from a salad made from seasonal veggies. Eat Real Food...that's right, that's what I said. Before you jump on the latest trend diet, or any "diet" at all ask your self this. Can I picture this food growing in a field or walking around on the land. Our digestive systems have not changed in milenial and our food system had radically changed in the last few decades, our bodies do not know how to handle these new lab made foods. Even a lot of "foods" that are called healthy are not easily recognized or digested by our systems. And when we are working through burnout, we need simple, easy whole foods that are nutrient dense. Ever get the afternoon slump? It could be because you are dehydrated... Even just a 2% drop in our hydration levels have been linked to poorer brain function, lower mood and fatigue. And the worst part is...by the time we feel thirsty... we are already dehydrated. And often times we think we are hungry when we are actually thirsty. Being properly hydrated is a simple first step in coming back from burnout. Start by making sure you are drinking at minimum 2L a day...likely you will need more, but use the "pee test" to help you figure it out...your pee should be the colour of pale lemonade, other than the first pee of the day, if you are adequately hydrated. Remember too that it's not just about water quanity. Quality counts too, move away from drinking tap water! Also add a pinch of a good quality sea salt and/or a squeeze of lemon into your water to make it more absorable.
