Spent last weekend at the @adlerplanet for Lilly's birthday. While I'm not really into the planetary science aspect of space, I am absolutely intrigued by astronautics. Why is there a new race to the Moon? The idea of harvesting a clean and efficient form of energy from the Moon has stimulated science fiction and fact in recent decades. Unlike Earth, which is protected by its magnetic field, the Moon has been bombarded with large quantities of Helium-3 by the solar wind. It is thought that this isotope could provide safer nuclear energy in a fusion reactor, since it is not radioactive and would not produce dangerous waste products. It is estimated that 1 kg of Helium-3 in nuclear fusion with 0.65 kg of deuterium will provide about 19 MW of energy throughout the year, which means that 500 kg of helium-3 can produce 5 GW of clean, ecological energy 24 hours a day for one year for a major city (3+ million inhabitants). "Helium-3 on the moon is worth $4 billion per ton. It's the most valuable thing in space," Gerald Kulcinski, professor emeritus of nuclear engineering at the University of Wisconsin and former director of the Fusion Technology Institute, says. China is counting down to the launch of a robotic spacecraft which will travel to the far side of the Moon, and pave the way for a crewed landing and a base on the lunar south pole. China aims to put its astronauts on the Moon by 2030. Then the start of the Helium-3 harvest can begin for China. A hero among heroes. #otd in #aviationhistory (May 21, 1927), Charles Lindbergh arrived in France and became the first person to successfully cross the Atlantic in a non-stop solo flight that lasted 33 and a half hours…a feat he made in a Ryan aircraft named the Spirit of St. Louis. 97 years later, it’s easy to lose sight of just how big of a deal this was, and just how enormous his celebrity was. After all, today, thousands of people fly the Atlantic in relative luxury every single day. The artifacts presented here give us some hints of just how audacious and fraught with danger this all was in 1927; songs were written about him, dances were created and named in his honor, and films were made about this American hero. Anthropologically speaking, he was a god. It stands to reason that he’d be the hero celebrated by the astronauts we typically reflect upon here. Venera 1, also called Venera-1VA No.2 and Sputnik 8 in the West, was a Soviet spacecraft originally designed to collect data on Venus. It was 643.5 kilograms (1,419 pounds) consisting of a 1.05 meter (3 foot five inches) in diameter and totaled 2.035 meters (6 feet 8.1 inches) in height. The probe had solar panels as a power source. The scientific equipment onboard included a flux-gate magnetometer attached to the antenna boom, two ion traps to measure solar wind, micrometeorite detectors, and Geiger counter tubes and a sodium iodide scintillator for measurement of cosmic radiation. However, due to excessive heating from the solar detection sensors, the probe was unable to send back any data. The spacecraft flew around Venus, unable to report on what the planet was hiding. Despite this, a brief test prior to losing contact proved that plasma was uniformly present in deep space. Review of Apollo 8 by Jeffery Kluger! “This was the first time they were seeing them together-the ugly broken world beneath them and the lovely breakable one in front of them” (232). Apollo 8 is a nonfiction history of the first mission to the moon. It is nonfiction but unlike others, it reads fairly smoothly and like a story. The novel follows the birth of the American space program, with all its first attempts and failings. As well as details about the mission, the book goes through the personal histories of the astronauts. The retelling of the Apollo 8 mission manages to capture the tensions of the Cold War at the same time as the wonder of discovery. It’s engaging while staying truthful and accurate. The elegant 926 Space Centre from the first year, 1979. The late 70’s and early 80’s saw some fantastic development in the shape of bricks and design and this set is right smack in the middle of this exiting time of transition. The Command Centre is mostly made up old school bricks but new pieces are introduced, the radar dishes on the roof are great examples of new pieces. Also LEGO is by now completely committed to the new Minfigure, creating a brand new world around them, vehicles they fit in and accessories for them to hold. But the most obvious thing that illustrates that this set has on leg in the old and the other in the new world though is the fact that it was released in different versions. The European 926 version and American 493-3 versions WITH the cool crater baseplate we all know and love. But prior to those there was the 493-1 flat plate version! There was a crater built with slope elements, but I guess that design did not quite cut it and the plate was exchanged for the new version.
