Froze half of the lake, might save the rest for later 🧊 Pangong Lake (Pangong Tso) spans the international border between India and China and is one of the highest lakes in the world, with an elevation of 4,225 meters (13,862 feet). In this winter scene, a sheet of cracked ice tops the right side of the lake, with open water on the left side. During the summer, species such as bar-headed geese and Brahminy ducks attract bird watchers to the lake, which is a major breeding ground for migrating birds. Several roads also cut across the landscape, including one with switchbacks that ascends a steep slope. It took me a few days to draw this. I wanted to make it look realistic and cartoony at once and I think I made it. As a "model", I used old Earth photo made during Apollo 11 mission and one of the photos made by DSCOVR, but I don't remember which one extactly. Ever Wonder How Las Vegas' iconic The Sphere was Built? 🤔 The Sphere is an innovative mega-construction with an immersive experience located near the Las Vegas Strip and adjacent to famous resorts like Bellagio and Caesars Palace. Using high-resolution satellite imagery, we can compare The Sphere's construction journey between 2021 and 2023. 🛰️ It's spherical structure is the culmination of a complex process. Four massive concrete cores were built and interwoven with a staggering 9,700 tons of steel and a series of tensioned ring beams. Allowing this innovative engineering structure to supporting the 11,000-ton roof. Due to its sheer scale, the world's fourth-largest crane was used.🏗️ In the 2nd image, we can see the post-construction steel skeleton, revealing the intricate framework that holds everything together. If you look closely, you can even spot the crane. After completing the exterior structure, the focus switched to building out The Sphere's interior steel framework. This intricate network is vital for supporting a mind-blowing 1.2 million LED light sources, creating The Sphere's iconic look. Exclusive post-relocation photos of the #ASIM payload. On April 15, 2024, the external payload ASIM (Atmosphere-Space Interactions Monitor) was relocated to its original position on the #Columbusmodule on board of the #InternationalSpaceStation 🛰️. ASIM is developed by the @europeanspaceagency to study the Transcient Luminous Events (TLE’s): red sprites, blue jets, elves … and Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes (TGF’s). ASIM is operated by the Belgian User Support and Operations Centre 🇧🇪 #BUSOC. The B.USOC-team that has followed the relocation closely also takes care of the general coordination in the ISS ecosystem, carries out the requests from the science team and transfers the ASIM data to the Science Data Centre in Denmark for post-processing and data distribution. Originally designed as an Earth-viewing instrument, ASIM turned into a limb-viewing instrument after being moved to another external location in January 2022, as a NASA payload had to be installed on ASIM’s original location. Although initially foreseen as a 2-year mission, the outstanding performance of the ASIM payload and its instruments resulted in a mission extension of 5 years. With the NASA payload mission completed, the opportunity arises for ASIM to move back to its original location and to resume its primary science mission. [Overview the Earth] No.2063: Guiana Highlands🇻🇪 Astronaut on board #ISS captured #GuianaShield and #Canaima National Park, #Venezuela. Canaima National Park is a 30,000km2 park in south-eastern Venezuela that roughly occupies the same area as the Gran Sabana region. In 1994, it was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, as a natural reserve that has abrupt relief special and unique around the world, the tepuis. About 65% of the park is occupied by plateaus of rock called tepuis, which are a kind of table-top mountain millions of years old, with vertical walls and almost flat tops. These constitute a unique biological environment and are also of great geological interest. Their sheer cliffs and waterfalls (including Angel Falls, which is the highest waterfall in the world, at 979m create spectacular landscapes. The most famous tepuis in the park are Mount Roraima, the tallest and easiest to climb, and Auyantepui, the site of Angel Falls. NASA is helping protect tigers 🐅 In the last 200 years, tigers have lost at least 93% of their historical range and now live in just 10 countries, mostly in Asia. Led by the Wildlife Conservation Society and funded by @nasa, a team of scientists used data from NASA satellites and others to monitor changes in tiger habitats. They also mapped large stretches of “empty forest” that could be a suitable habitat for these large cats. 🌳🐅 The map shows tiger habitat as of January 2020. The tan areas represent tigers’ indigenous range. Orange areas show habitats where tigers are present. Green areas are places where tigers aren’t known to live recently, but are suitable and large enough that they could be a potential area for tiger restoration. Ever wonder how the world's largest artificial island was built? 🏙️ Palm Jumeirah, an artificial archipelago off Dubai's coast, holds the title of the world's largest artificial island. 🌴 Its construction started in 2001, and in just five years (2001-2006), it was completed through land reclamation, a process of creating new land from oceans, seas, riverbeds, or lake beds. Despite Dubai's abundant desert sand, it proved unsuitable for island construction due to how refined the grains were, making them easily eroded by water. Therefore, tons of sand and rock were dredged from the Persian Gulf and strategically placed to form the island's base. Additionally, to ensure its palm-like shape, global positioning systems (GPS) were used throughout the process. 🌊🛰️ Initially, Palm Jumeirah was planned for 60,000 residents. However, the project's popularity doubled that number before completion. Palm Jumeirah is a popular tourist destination because of its view of Dubai.
