"Laika, The First Dog in Space" - Soviet poster from 1961 commemorating Laika, who was a dog that flew to space in 1957 aboard Sputnik 2. Before Laika's flight, little was known about the effects of spaceflight on living creatures. As such, animals were seen as a necessary precursor to human missions in space. Laika was found as a stray in the streets of Moscow. Moscow was chosen to find strays as they were considered more accustomed to enduring hunger and cold temperatures. Laika, along with other dogs, was put in increasingly confined cages in order to train them for the conditions of the Sputnik 2 cabin. The dogs were also placed in centrifuges to simulate the acceleration of a rocket launch and were fed high-nutrition gel. Eventually, Laika was selected to make the flight to space, with 2 other dogs acting as backups. After the launch, Laika's heart rate rose to 240 beats per minute and only returned to a normal rate of 102 after three hours in space. After around 5 hours of flight, signs of life were no longer detected. Soviet authorities gave conflicting statements as to how Laika died. Some said it was poison while others said it was asphyxiation. However, it is now generally accepted that it was caused by overheating. The flight sparked protests abroad with animal rights groups protesting outside of Soviet embassies. General John B. Medaris was born 122 years ago this weekend (May 12, 1902). In 1955, he commanded the Army Ballistic Missile Agency (ABMA) in Huntsville, Alabama. It was that agency that oversaw Wernher von Braun’s German rocket team and the development of the Jupiter C rocket…the very rocket that would place America’s first satellite (Explorer I) into orbit in January 1958….after their arrival in America under the auspices of Operation Paper Clip and after their initial stay in White Sands, NM. Those years (1955 to 1958) were heady times that birthed the space age…and all were before NASA’s creation. He seems somewhat lost to history now, I suspect, because he actually lobbied against the creation of a centralized civilian space agency thinking it would be ineffective and inefficient. He might not have been too far off the mark on the latter point, but in light of the tremendous success of Projects Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo in the 1960s, it’s easy to see why he found himself on the wrong side of the effectiveness argument…and history. But in those early days, he was among a handful of key players in America’s fledgling space program. His leadership delivered America’s first success in space and as such, he deserves to be remembered with a rightful place in history. He was James Webb before James Webb! Very few times we get to re acquaint ourselves with the watch that started our love for the hobby, And even fewer when that watch is a piece of history that you can see in the flesh, I owe the @omega Speedmaster Profesional a lot, and the Apollo program even more, from reigniting my love of watches to meeting and cementing friendships. The Speedy isy grail, and maybe even it'll be my exit watch, especially if it's bought at retail, 42mm of pure history on your wrist, from pilots, and race drivers, to, of course one of humanity's biggest achievements!!! Mind you my @bulova lunar pilot, the Omegas "moon brother", isn't far behind being the watch that braved across the airless wind on the moon, yet the speedy has my heart, while the Bulova has my wrist. 5 May 1961, Navy Commander Alan Shepard pilots his capsule Freedom 7 to 101.5 nautical miles up, becoming the second person and first American to reach space. While his flight did not orbit the Earth like Gagarin's did three weeks before, it was step in the right direction for the American space program who were now trying to catch up to the Soviets in space.

The Mercury 3 launch was powered by a 𝐑𝐞𝐝𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐭, a variant of the ballistic missiles used during World War II that had been modified for spaceflight. Moments before liftoff, 𝐒𝐡𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐚𝐢𝐝, "𝐋𝐞𝐭'𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐞." Once in space, Shepard manually controlled the orientation of the spacecraft for a short period of time, demonstrating that astronauts could effectively interact with the spacecraft systems. Shepard wore a specially designed spacesuit adapted from Navy aviation pressure suits, which provided life support and protection. The entire mission lasted about 15 minutes from launch to splashdown in the Atlantic Ocean. Following the mission, President John F. In a move that has sent waves across the international community, Russia has exercised its veto power against a joint US-Japan resolution at the United Nations Security Council. When I was contacted by @shelley_slateart from @slate_art I really thought I was being spammed 🤣 To have been asked by an art consultant firm to discuss the creation of an original piece for one of their clients was a dream come true. Their client was looking for artists local to Huntsville to create artwork honoring space exploration while also capturing regional landmarks, as the piece would be hanging in a Huntsville business space. 🧑‍🚀🚀🧑🏾‍🚀🪐 I came up with two concepts, both of which I completely adored, finalized the client selected illustration, and then waited. When I finally got to see the piece printed on metal and mounted about a year later, I couldn’t have been more proud of the work that I put into it. Creating a large piece like this was something completely new for me and I’m so glad that I was given the chance. I hope that those who get to see it find it fun to look over and maybe even a little inspiring. I think my favorite part was getting the tour to see what everyone had created and meeting a few of the artists. (Apollo Program configuration) Scale 1:485 The Mobile Launcher Platform (MLP) was a critical component of the Apollo program, dedicated to transporting and supporting the colossal Saturn V rocket from the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) to the launch pad. Mounted atop massive crawler-transporters, the MLP slowly traversed the distance, carrying the Saturn V and its intricate components. At the launch pad, the towering Launch Umbilical Tower (LUT) rose above the MLP, providing access for technicians and astronauts. Service platforms dotted the MLP, allowing meticulous pre-launch preparations and inspections. Hold-down arms secured the Saturn V until engine ignition, while the flame trench beneath directed the exhaust away during liftoff, safeguarding the infrastructure. Together, these elements ensured the safe and successful launch of the Saturn V and its payloads on historic missions to the Moon. The Saturn V rocket, developed by NASA in the 1960s, aimed to fulfill President Kennedy's goal of landing humans on the Moon. Standing over 111 meters tall and weighing approximately 2800 tons, it's the only vehicle to carry humans beyond low Earth orbit, with the largest payload capacity to low Earth orbit. ——— The design journey was quite complicated, especially in the Launch Tower section. U.S. intelligence reports on Russia’s development of a space-based nuclear weapon were a key point of discussion at a congressional hearing May 1. Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space Policy John Plumb faced questioning from lawmakers about the weapon’s capabilities and potential impact. At a hearing of the House Armed Services Committee’s strategic forces subcommittee, Plumb said the administration remains highly concerned about reports that Russia is developing an anti-satellite capability that could be a nuclear device. And he stressed the need for further modeling and studies to understand the weapon’s potential impact in orbit. Many of the questions were raised by Rep. Mike Turner (R-Ohio) who chairs the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. The news that Russia might be developing a space-based nuclear weapon came to light in February after Turner warned about a potential threat and urged the Biden administration to disclose details about the alleged weapon. The White House said that, while concerning, this capability is reportedly still under development and not ready for immediate deployment. The administration noted that deployment would violate the 1967 Outer Space Treaty’s ban on nuclear weapons in Earth’s orbit. Turner pressed Plumb to provide details on what type of weapon Russia is developing and where in space it might be deployed. Plumb declined to elaborate on the weapon’s launch readiness, suggesting these details be addressed in a classified session. ‘Threat to all satellites’ According to Plumb’s statement to the committee read by Turner, “This capability could pose a threat to all satellites operated by countries and companies around the globe, as well as to the vital communications, scientific, meteorological, agricultural, commercial, and national security services we all depend upon.” Upon further questioning by Turner, Plumb suggested that if detonated, a nuclear, anti-satellite weapon could render low Earth orbit unusable for a long time, perhaps a year.
