Grove of Beech trees near Faccombe at the weekend when it was hot. The weather has gone back to being sort of grey now. I was testing out my new primary colour set of W&N gouache- if you think those new super cheap daler gouache might be a bargain be careful- two in the set had dried up and the others are sort of transparent which makes them pointless for gouache. Nature's Museum 🌳 The #sacredforest of #mawphlang - moss-covered stone in the #khasi dialect is situated in the East Khasi Hills in #meghalaya aka Lawkyntang - #sacredgrove One of the oldest & most sacred groves spread across 193 acres, with an abundance of flowering & medicinal plants, trees, mushrooms, birds, & insects. The forest is safeguarded by members of the Lyngdoh clan & is believed to be the abode of the Khasi deity, Labasa, who is said to protect the clan & the village from all harm. You are instantly awestruck by the scenic beauty of the lush green meadows stretching out far & wide (did a Maria from the movie the sound of music), with the woods tucked away in a corner. Sacrificial rituals were performed inside the forest. It is believed that if a leopard appeared, it was an auspicious sign & the ritual could be carried out. Wildlife sightings are rare, but the forest is said to be inhabited by toads, foxes, snakes, squirrels, wild cats, & several bird species. The only rule of the forest is that you are forbidden to take anything from here, not even a leaf! There are tales of people who have broken this taboo, have fallen ill & even died. In fact, local lore states that in 1970, the army tried taking out dead wood & trees, but they were unable to do so as their truck didn't start even after multiple tries. The first Carabalí in Cuba uttered the phrase “Mi botán botán ékue enyenisón” (a good heart is the best fundamento). Andrés Flores described the formation of the first Abakuá group in Cuba, “The first juego (lodge] they made here was from Efi territory, The phrase ‘Bóto kenbóto akama enyéne Efó, Ápapa Efi Akamaró, erendió Efik Ebúton’ refers to the meeting where the creation of this juego was proposed. The first baróko (ceremony] to create the Efik Ebúton lodge was held in the municipality of Regla in 1836. Regla was renamed Itiá Ororó Kandé, which means: ‘a land at the other side of the harbor.” In fact, this phrase was interpreted by an Ekpè authority in Calabar as a proclamation of Ekè’s foundation in Cuba. To enact the birth of the first Cuban lodge, Ekpè leaders entered a cave, a symbolic womb in the earth. Andrés continued, “They performed the baróko to consecrate the Obónes (dignitaries) of the juego Efik Ebúton, in a cave called Itiá mbóko Nékre Áka-maró.” This name can be interpreted as “the foundation of the Voice by prince Áka-maró.” In Efik Ekpè, itiat is the foundation stone that every lodge must have. Mbókò is a leading Ékpè grade linked to the sound of the Divine Voice. They gave the cave this name because the Africans who acted as godparents belonged to a lodge in Africa of the same name.
