Did you know that since 1897 anything made in New York State Prisons had to be for state use? Everything from clothes to furniture to manhole covers was manufactured in the prison—at one point, there were over 30 styles of chairs being made in New York prisons! Senior Historian Aaron Noble was able to show us this skillfully carved one in the New York State Museum collection. It was made at Sing Sing Prison and given to Theodore Roosevelt when he was the Governor of New York. #singsingprison #newyorkstateprisons #singsingprisonmuseum #nyshistory #nymuseums #preservinghistory #prisonmuseumhistory #prisonhistory

May 22 is National Maritime Day. Did you know CDCR got its start with prison ships? Before the first prison was constructed in California, the state relied on county jails to act as state prisons. These included the La Grange in Sacramento and the Euphemia in San Francisco. By 1851, the state acquired the Waban, the first California prison, a ship converted to a prison vessel. Sailed by San Francisco Sheriff Coffee Jack Hayes, the ship eventually anchored off Point San Quentin, as shown in this illustration from the California State Library and State Archives. Those serving state prison sentences rowed ashore during the day to quarry stone, make brick, and build the first cells of what would become San Quentin State Prison (now known as San Quentin Rehabilitation Center). In its early days, people incarcerated at San Quentin learned ship trades such as repair and construction of smaller vessels. Learn more about CDCR's maritime history on Inside CDCR (find link in our bio or see the comments for a direct link). #nationalmaritimeday #cdcr #californiaprison #unlockinghistory #prisonhistory #prisonship

Crossed back into Scotland to spend the day in one of my favourite border towns… Jedburgh. 🚐🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 We stopped off on the outskirts for a walk up to the Waterloo Monument where the views were amazing 🤩 Then into town where the Abbey, Mary Queen of Scots House, and Prison Museum are all within walking distance of the car park (which was free - as was the House and Museum 👍🏼😀) History and countryside-tastic! 🤓🙌😆 #jedburgh #scottishborders #jedburghabbey #maryqueenofscotshouse #prisonhistory #kingsandqueens #greatdaysoutinscotland

Introducing a rare vintage paper booklet recounting a chilling chapter in history: the gripping tale of the execution of George Rock and William Hayes in 1908 and 1909. This historical artifact provides a firsthand account of the daring escape attempt and subsequent capture, complete with vivid illustrations that bring the events to life. Despite some staining and creases, this booklet remains in readable condition, making it a valuable addition to any collection of true crime memorabilia. Delve into the harrowing details of Deputy Warden John Robinson's tragic murder and Warden Frank Conley's heroic confrontation with the escaped inmates. Experience the tension as Conley bravely confronts Rock and Hayes, armed with only his .41 caliber revolver. Despite suffering numerous knife wounds, Conley manages to subdue the assailants, ultimately leading to their execution by hanging. This vintage booklet sheds light on a dark moment in history, offering a glimpse into the brutality of the criminal justice system at the turn of the century. Don't miss the opportunity to own a piece of this haunting tale, preserved for generations to come. The title for my upcoming exhibition is “Worlds within Worlds” This theme was inspired by images taken through viewing panels on the old prison doors and which then led on to further development in other work. I subsequently found out that this theme chimed with the ideas of philosopher Michael Foucault in his theory of heterotopias, or othered worlds. The title comes from his writings which include references to prisons. Castel Sant’Angelo, originally known as the Mausoleum of Hadrian, was constructed between 123 and 139 AD under the Roman Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and his family. Situated in Rome, Italy, the castle stands on the right bank of the Tiber River, near the Vatican City. The structure was later converted into a military fortress and castle by the popes in the 14th century. The castle’s exterior features a distinctive cylindrical shape, rising over 50 meters tall, crowned by a statue of the Archangel Michael. It is constructed of Roman concrete and faced with travertine marble. The interior comprises multiple levels, including dungeons, apartments, and papal chambers. It’s served as a fortress, residence, and prison; and today it’s a museum open to the public. #CastelSantAngelo #RomanArchitecture #Hadrian #Mausoleum #RomeLandmark #ArchangelMichael #HistoricalFortress #PapalResidence #ItalianHistory #TiberRiver #MedievalCastle #RenaissanceArchitecture #RomanEmpire #VaticanCity #CylindricalTower #TravertineMarble #MilitaryHistory #PrisonHistory #CulturalHeritage #TouristDestination

I came across a page depicting prison history with a page dedicated section to Hertfordshire Lock Ups, Cages and Prisons. It is recorded that by 1598 Hertfordshire had eight bridewells or houses of correction, far more than other neighbouring counties. They were all closed in 1842 when police cells took their place but five can still be seen around the county today. This is the Buntingford Cage on Church Street, built in the early 1700s. Keep your eyes peeled for examples of other lockups around the county 👀 💻🔍 prison history #prison #prisonhistory #lockups #cages #bridewells #buntingford #middleages #visitherts #herts #hertsuk #hertfordshire #hertsbedsbucks

If you were sentenced to hard labour in an English prison, you would probably spend a fair bit of time on the treadmill (introduced in 1818). The idea was to teach inmates the 'habits of industry', despite the fact that prisoners weren't actually 'milling' anything. It was also intended to be pointless and punishing - the speed of the wheel was controlled by a brake, and weights would be added to increase the resistance (and futility). Later on, the treadmill would begin to be used for a purpose, such as grinding corn and pumping water. A prisoner would work for 6 hours a day (3 hours at a time) - on the wheel of 15 minutes, then 5 minutes of rest. Use of the treadmill continued all the way to 1902, when it was abolished due to the Prison Act of 1898. Hard labour was discussed in the recent Geneageek's Gems podcast episode, 'The Hannah Chronicles', as well as in previous episodes, 'The Baddow Elopement' and 'An Alleged Outrage' (links in bio). Cork Prison makes me realize how difficult conditions people once lived in. Cold, small cells, minimal food rations, and for some it could have been better than begging and living on the street. Seeing the prison from the inside can be overwhelming, but this trip made me think differently. How did ordinary, poor people live in the past? Things that are so obvious to us: running and hot water or a heated houses are absolutely basic for us, but it was not always like that. It is worth taking a trip to the past to appreciate what we have now. Even if it's just a trip to prison 😉 #corkcitygaol #prisonlife #prisonhistory

How often do you write things down? Do you feel lucky to have access to education? This #NationalHandwritingDay we’re looking into handwriting in gaol. The House of Discipline/School of Reform was the first female reformatory school in England and was established by Elizabeth Fry in 1825. One of the rules from the Fifth Annual Report of the Committee of the House of Discipline, or School of Reform 1830 read that: • That the Children be carefully and daily instructed in the Holy Scriptures; also taught reading, spelling, and needlework; and that they be employed in household or other labour, in proportion to their strength. Along with: • That ten of the girls, whose general good conduct appear to deserve reward, shall be taught writing and arithmetic. While it might seem unusual to treat learning to write as a reward, it would have been life-changing for the lucky ten girls in 1830. With many young women in the modern world still denied access to education, take a moment to consider how easy these vital skills feel, and how different life would be without them. #CrimeAndPunishment #History #PrisonHistory #Nottingham #CountyGaol #PrisonReform #Education #ReadingAndWriting

Tate Britain 🇬🇧/ Millbank prison The Millbank prison opened in 1816 and the conditions were awful in this place with diseases such as cholera/ dysentery/ and scurvy all being reported here. Plus the smell of the river Thames which back then was an open sewer, which would add to the misery. 1843: The prison was in such a bad way that Parliament decided that the facility was no longer fit to hold prisoners long time. It was demoted to a general depot/ holding centre- where those sentenced to deportation to Australia 🇦🇺 were kept. Two Aussie slang words supposedly came from here: Down under - some believed that a passageway which connected the prison to the Thames - was used by prisoners who went ‘down under’ this tunnel and out to the river. POM- Aussie slang for a British person- the inmates wore these uniforms with the letters POM on them which stood for prisoners of Millbank. Deportation ceased in 1867- some 162,000 convicts had been sent to Australia. The prison shut its doors for good in 1890- but due to its weird shape/ construction it took a few years to demolish. Whilst it was being demolished - Sir Henry Tate donated his collection of 65 paintings and £80,000 to put in a gallery to display them to the nation. Tate Britain opened in 1897. Nothing survives of the original prison apart from a couple of reminders : Concrete ditch which was part of the outer perimeter wall - which is now someone’s allotment. A couple of Bollards- which were used for securing ropes for towing and mooring. #tatebritaingallery #tatebritainlondon #millbankprison #millbanklondon #prisonhistory #riverthames #parliament #australia #deportation #deportationtoaustralia #penalcolony #pom #downunder #slang #theories #demolished #sirhenrytate #artgallery #concreteditch #bollards #sinister #macarbe #diseases #prisoners #19thcentury #justicesystem #legalsystem #harsh #sinister #paintings #australianhistory

McNeil Island, located in southern Puget Sound, was named in 1841 by Lt. Charles Wilkes of the United States Exploring Expedition in honor of William Henry McNeill. McNeill (the name, but not the island, is spelled with two l's) was captain of the Hudson’s Bay Company steamship Beaver, the first steamship to travel on Puget Sound. In 1875, Washington Territory’s first federal penitentiary began operation there. The federal government turned McNeil Island over to the Washington State Department of Corrections in 1981. It has the distinction of being the only prison in the U. S. that began as a territorial prison, became a federal penitentiary, and finally a state prison. It is also the last prison in America located on a small, remote island. McNeil Island, in Pierce County, is 2.25 miles wide and 3 miles long. It comprises approximately 4,400 acres, and lies 2.8 miles across Puget Sound from Steilacoom, the nearest town. Information courtesy of Daryl C. McClary, HistoryLink.org (April 2003).
