A Thin Place A week has passed since that night. It was caused by multiple X-class solar flares and CMEs (coronal mass ejections), racing towards Earth at three million miles per hour. But solar flares alone don’t always mean aurorae. Sometimes, the flares miss earth (which is what happened to the most powerful flare seen so far this solar cycle on the 14th May.) Sometimes they hit, but if the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) is in a northerly direction, it struggles to connect with Earth’s magnetosphere, and the lights are minimal. Other times solar storms hit during the day, and by the time darkness falls activity has ceased. There are also clouds. On an isle such as the UK, where the weather is fickle, clouds often block astronomical events from view. Even the Moon, when she is full and bright, can wash out lesser displays. But the Moon was waxing, the skies were clear and the IMF was pointing south. Against all the odds, the variables aligned, and aurorae lit up skies around the world. Yet science fails to explain how if felt to be beneath a display like this. My words probably fail too, but I have tried to convey it in my latest blog.* It was transcendental, the epitome of what the Celts called a thin place, where the physical world amalgamated with something other. Monsters and creatures were always my first love, and while I now focus more on the human figure, I want to find a way to re-integrate monstrous figures in a way that fits with my now more metaphysical, psychological and emotional approach. SPHINX was all about the mystery of the self, and was created at a time when I was questioning a lot of things about myself, and finding who I was and what I wanted to be, to be more of a mystery than I expected. My twenties were the years I spent looking for who I was, and trying to organise the chaotic legacy of my childhood into something I could see an expansive future with. It was tough, and my art was darker, and perhaps somewhat less subtle than I try to make now, but it was also cathartic, and allowed me a lot of needed introspection and self-reflection. [Corals Art Gallery, MILAN, Until May 31] On May 10 we opened at @coralsartgallery the New Chapter of “Goddesses & Muses”, a multisensory journey focused on the theme of memory, its idealization, its oblivion. The new exhibition, curated by @gretazuccali , who created its mean concept, is inspired by Friedrich Nietzsche, who considered forgetting a vital and necessary function for individual health and well-being. According to him, the ability to forget past experiences was essential to be able to live in the present and look to the future with optimism. Being trapped in the past, tormented by memories, can in fact prevent one from fully experiencing life and the present moment. Forgetting, on the contrary, allows one to free oneself from the burden of the past and focus on what is important in the present. ⚠️ This is the reason why the entire feeling of the exhibition is changing every day, and it’s disappearing a little more every single day, giving to the visitors a different experience every time. Oblivion is not only about visual art: 🔹 We presented an Original Soundtrack by @equani_ap (in collaboration with @artyom_songtherapist ) born to be the artistic musical representation of the exhibition. When @amyseemanhere and @sipnbloom approached me to model for their lookbook to promote their Spring Runway show, titled “Otherworldly,” I didn’t hesitate to say yes. Firstly, because I’m drawn to collaborating with genuinely good-hearted individuals – and secondly, because the show’s name struck a chord deep within me, resonating with my life experiences. From a young age, I’ve always felt like I was from another world, inherently different. Whether it was my creativity, my mode of expression, or my unique perspective shaped by early losses and undiagnosed ADHD, or my intuition guiding me, I felt like an outsider. A weekend escape that felt like a dream, utterly surreal and otherwordly to say the least. Trying to describe the breathtaking display of nature without exaggerating feels impossible; it was like a scene from a Studio Ghibli movie brought to life. Lately, my mind has been clouded with doubts and a stifling monotony, begging for a change of scenery. So, on a whim, we decided on a weekend getaway to Yosemite, with plans to attend a star-gazing event and do a beautiful hike. Little did we anticipate the sheer magnificence that awaited us, as our closest stellar companion was planning to put on a show. Throwing away a huge mass of its corona towards us, the celestial meeting of these charged particles with the dynamo of our planet’s magnetic field resulted in a light show for the ages. And if you live in the Bay area, what better place to witness this than one of nature’s most magnificent cathedrals, the Yosemite Valley? It was a light show for the ages, the wispy dance of reds, purples, and greens slow-moving bursts entranced the horizon overlooking the valley from Tunnel View. The dark sky wasn’t really dark, but ethereal in its appearance. Like some portal to another world had opened up, if this is not a spiritual experience, I don’t know what else is. In those fleeting moments, I left behind the blahness that had consumed me. It reminded me to cast aside the weight of weary existence and revel instead in the knowledge that somewhere in the vast expanse of the universe, there exists a guiding presence watching over me, watching over us. I had the chance to be part of the course on Embodied Ethics in the age of AI hosted by @andrewdunn and Josh Schrei from @the_emerald_podcast The course discusses what ethics in AI development through an embodied and animist perspective. Here some short quotes from the first talk by Josh that also inspired these images: “What needs to be done about the AI question might bear more of a resemblance to the guiding principles of ancient magic and mystery schools than it does to questions of scientific ethics... Ellery has stopped believing in the gods when their home becomes stuck in a perpetual winter for the past 5 years. Knox is a familiar from the Other World who is in this world as part of a magical bargain but has since lost contact with his goddess queen. When Ellery and Knox cross paths, they strike a bargain—Knox will help Ellery find a way to end winter and Ellery will help Knox tie himself to this world and experience humanity—but growing feelings wasn’t supposed to be part of the deal. This book has me a bit conflicted. I felt like the first half was quite directionless, but I absolutely loved the latter half. The events of the first half felt very random and untethered if that makes sense. And although most of it actually tie together by the end, it still came across very thrown together. The first half was supposed to be the cosy part of the story with Knox trying for teenage movie trope moments (that were actually quite charming when allowed to be), but interspersed with deadly interruptions that rather negated any coziness. But once the stakes are upped by the latter half (especially once all is revealed), it just really had me going. I loved Knox—his determination, his wanting, and his humanity. Meanwhile, I was rooting for Ellery to fight for what they want—freedom for Knox to choose for himself and the possibility of falling in love. I was consistently crying, moved by the very events they go through. Although not my favorite of FT Lukens’ books, Otherworldly delivers a heartwarming story of queer love and found family with supernatural stakes.
