Cereal is vegan and is often sold in packaging made from recycled materials. When I eat breakfast, I recycle the box and I take the bag to the grocery store to be recycled. I'll be bringing all the spring and summer veggie seedlings -- kale, chard, cabbage, lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, summer squash . . . and luffa plants this week! I'll also have annual and perennial herbs (sweet, sacred and thai basils, parsley, cilantro, oregano, sage, chives, garlic chives, lemon balm) and a gradually-expanding selection of perennial native plants (milkweeds, asters, goldenrod, blue lobelia, black-eyed Susans . . . ). Today I’d like to share a story of my own. The last few months I’ve watched my mother speaking regularly to homeless people. It’s something she’s done for years in secret. She goes out of her way to remember their names and have long conversations and to return and check on them. I’m grateful to witness her kindness and care for others, because throughout my younger years I only remember her working long hours and multiple jobs as an a sole parent. Throughout my years in Thailand, I've had an uncanny ability to discover dead green snakes on the road, often in the shape of a heart. Symbolizing death and rebirth, the shedding of old skins and outdated masks, the snake is also one of the most misunderstood and feared beings on Earth. How could something that connects so closely to the very Earth not be our greatest teacher and our deepest kin? Perhaps because snake speaks to intimacy in ways that we most want to run from. The vulnerability of exposure, the capacity to feel and move our bodies in ways that appear to defy what seems normal, the inherent fear that comes with the unknown. Steeped in the depths for months, I gathered my pieces and broke through my pain body, forgiving over and over the frail attempts that understanding bring to the table. I don't want to understand the why; rather, I choose to understand the new way. We can not avoid suffering altogether, but we can mitigate unnecessary suffering by choosing differently. I came upon this snake in the middle of the road, still alive but I could sense it was dying. Rather than leave it to be crushed, I coaxed it towards the side of the road. When it became apparent that it could not do it alone, I picked it up and moved it. I was then granted witness of its dying process. Writhing, flailing, belly up and exposed. I wept as I felt this process within myself. Saying goodbye to what I so deeply wanted but what was no longer in alignment. Dying to my will so that God's will could pour through me. Work through me. I stayed until the end. Standing alone on the side of the road, sweat pouring down my face, hands clammy, heart crushingly alive. If this isn't Life, then I don't want it. I feel it all, love it all. Letting the heart be exposed is the greatest miracle of our existence. Thank you Snake. This blessed reminder of innocence and impermanence. Challenged by the powerful force of change, I walk to the edge. Embracing the ends to allow for doorways of new beginnings to blast open. Walking upon this Earth is such a bittersweet symphony. Not only do they fertilise the Earth’s soil, they fertilise our inner terrain as well. Knowing which wild weeds grow around us connects us to our landscape in a way that heals not only the body, but your spirit too. We are placed in relationship with the Earth. Plants that once were thought to be pesky are reframed as gifts from nature, and thus our whole attitude toward what our culture deems ‘unworthy’ shifts. And of course, wild weeds teach RESILIENCE - firstly, because they manage to grow in tough conditions, and secondly, because in learning to use them for food and medicine, we cultivate personal and collective autonomy and strength Wild weeds have so much medicine to offer for our bodies, for our minds and for our relationship to the Earth.
