So excited to watch episode 1 of The Great British Sewing Bee 🪡🐝 last night. Thanks to The Great British Sewing Bee . The A-Line skirt challenge seemed overly ambitious for the time given, don't think we could have completed it. We think they should give them a bit longer so we can really see their skill, such a shame to not see finished skirts. We agree the style they chose is a wardrobe must have though and in fact we ran a class in this earlier in the year. The transformation challenge produced some interesting T-shirt remakes, the back of Comfort’s transformation was striking and is something we taught to our school groups back in 2021 (see images attached). The casual dresses👗Made to Measure challenge sent us scurrying to the linen drawer to see if we have a duvet or tablecloth we could repurpose. What could be better than making a beautiful everyday dress out of some fabric that barely see the light of day. 🧵My favourite part is sewing… is the preparation. This part, the pinning and cutting and getting everything ready to take to your machine. I find such joy in slowing down during this stage and sewing in the present moment 🙌 I wasn’t always like this I can promise you! I used to rush rush rush and often would sit at the sewing machine feeling disappointed and upset when things didn’t work out 🙈 Teaching myself to slow down and do things properly from the start took awhile and now it’s more important to me than anything. With our sewing workshops full of brand new makers and those coming back to this hobby I often see the need to ‘hurry’ with the end goal more important than the beginning… So to all those new sewists/makers/crafters out there who will be watching the new GBSB series - enjoy it for its fun but know that sewing can also be a slow wonderful meditative journey and it can be the place you can really just ‘be’ while you craft. I’m not dismissing the occasional quick sew either but just a overall view I have for sewing and the misconceptions from watching a show that makes it seems like its a stressful and rushed experience 🫶 What’s your favourite part?? I have just finished teaching on a 8 week Clothing Design and Make course in Wigan. The main image shows some of my presents that I received from the attendees of the course. Thankyou so much to everyone who came to visit us over the weekend for the fabulous vintage brocante here at beautiful @cowslipworkshops - we had a fabulous time and got to meet some wonderful people, including the lovely Tara (pictured) from @tara.franklin_antiques and hubby Adi @hoof.antiques_brocante who shared some very funny stories 😂 We also had the pleasure of meeting lots of people who flew over from America to teach and attend ( some even came from Australia!!) the sewing workshops including Stacy from @stacynashdesigns and her lovely mum Marlene. One of my students who attend my clothing design and make classes has researched a multi-sized skirt design. She indicated that she was interested in developing the style and following the process that is required to create the garment from start to finish. As the style is multi-sized, I was interested in assisting my student to follow the process of creating a multi-sized skirt. The reason why I am interested in multi-sized products is because multi-sizing may assist towards cutting down on mass produced single sized garments that may not be used. The skirt was made out of unused curtains and was gifted to another of my students who will make use of the garment in the future. A fb memory came up today from the sewing workshops I used to run as an afterschool club and in the holidays. I don’t know how many children I taught overall but it was a lot of fun and many parents were immensely grateful that I taught their children skills that are often forgotten today. I met two girls the other day that used to come when they were 6 and they are now at secondary school and they still had some of the things they’d made in their bedrooms. I had to stop during Covid and then I became too busy with other work to get it going again.
