Boltby Bash mtb Enduro last weekend for myself and @katie_melville001 It was Katie's first go at a big proper enduro race and she got a win!! It's a 30km loop and 878m of elevation, with 5 timed natural descent stages and a 1200+ racers. Saturday is practice day so we did a complete loop round with a go at each stage for Sunday's race, so that's a total of 60km and just under 1800m of climbing according to her Garmin!! My practice day didn't go according to plan with a big crash at the top of stage 5! Thanks to Katie I'm still here to tell the story more on this in a separate post!! Thanks to my old mate @martynalderson for running up to the top of the stage for my bike and gear and accompanying Katie down her practice run and back to the finish. Cheers bud๐, Whilst i was attended to by @clevelandmrt and checked over, helped down the stage and driven back, thank you all very much!! Also massive thanks to old mate @nigetodd and mates for being Chief shade providers on the open hillside after i hit the deck and accompanying Katie around on race day the next day!! Katie put in a great ride for a 15yr old first timer and won the under 18 women's category, she was also 2nd fastest Woman overall on the day with a 10:53!! Ironman 70.3 Chattanoogaโฆ Iโm still struggling to find the words to succinctly recap the experience. There are so many positive takeaways from this race, but there are also a whole bunch of things I could improve on or do differently. Both make me unbelievably excited to return here this fall for the full Ironman! It was amazing though to see so many old friends and family out on both the bike and run courses! Really soaked in the hometown support, and it meant a lot! โค๏ธ Ultimately, my general feeling is happy, but not satisfied. 31st Pro Male (out of 54?) leaves a lot to be desired, especially considering I was in 13th off the bike. Early last week, I hit a milestone that I didnโt think nor did I even contemplate was possible. I hit 500 daily runs in a row! For me, an accomplishment that has been long in the running, pun intended. This all started on December 31, 2022, when I set out for a short run around my neighborhood to check on a picnic blanket that was set up for our family to watch the New Yearโs Eve Celebrations. The next day I continued with my next run, and the day after, and the day after, and another 496 days after that. Along the way Iโve endured pain and discomfort in various parts of my body that, even to this very day, still provides me with many challenges. Iโve overcome these different areas of pain that has helped me to build confidence in myself to overcome both physical and mental anguish. Through the 500 runs, there have been several firsts - the Spartan 10km Obstacle Race, the Taichung City 1/2 Marathon (which I ran but did not register for upon hearing the sound of the starting gun go off), the Xterra 21km Trail Run (in Kenting which I did register for and finish), and nearly 4700km scattered throughout Taiwan, Thailand and Japan. Iโm not stopping at 500 runs nor will I stop at 1000 runs on this streak. As long as my legs and the rest of my body can propel me forward there ainโt no reason to stop. To celebrate this incredible milestone, Iโve purchased a plane ticket to Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to get me to the starting line at the Toronto Waterfront Marathon in October. This will be my first full Marathon. I am incredibly thankful and grateful that I have been gifted a healthy body and legs, and my ability to take on physical challenges. What used to be strikes and balls, ground balls and pop-ups has transitioned to roads and trails, kilometers and VO2 Max! Hereโs to even more in the years to come! THE JOE BARR 500, 2024 is now closed. The banners are down, the times are posted, riders and crew are home, and there has been some sleep for most. Of course muscles still ache, blisters still have to heal, and the deep lines of fatigue may not be completely erased yet. The race taketh and the race giveth... this is the same for Race Directors too. While the effort of hosting a race is great, so are the rewards, so thank you to one and all for giving us the reward of your presence and your performances. What a fantastic bunch of ultra-cyclists and crew. This was our 7th year of hosting Race Joe Barr but the first where we concentrated solely on the 500-mile distance. It was also our first introduction to unsupported racing. We've learned a lot from you and with you so soon enough we'll let you know what 2025 will look like. Look away if youโre looking for a motivational story of how one overcame adversity and became a world championโฆ ๐ฅ Because this is far from it. #throwback to 10 years ago when I had my first bout. There are so many things from various angles I can talk about that bout. Background - It was my first ever boxing bout and supposedly my opponentโs. It turned out she was a kick-boxing champion with a belt and all sorts disguised as a โno-bouterโ for boxing. I was stopped in the first round after being given two standing counts. ๐คทโโ๏ธ Yes, it was unfair. Yes, it was cheating on her part. Yet it was still recorded as a loss on my card. Itโs hard to say how much it affected my confidence overall as a boxer but nevertheless, I kept on training and got to a development final one year. Still, I ended my boxing career with a terrible losing record. During those years, on top of training to compete, I learnt the skills and gained knowledge to become an amateur judge, referee and coach. And today, 10 years since my first boxing defeat, I got my shirt for the BBBoC for being the first female professional referee in the UK. Like I said at the start, this is not a story of how one becomes a world champion, but I feel itโs one that, like many out there, of someone despite all the circumstances, still finds courage, no matter how small, to take steps forward, pivot, and try to find their place in the world, in life. My goal was never to become an Olympian or world champion but to just win my next bout. I never really achieved that goal fully but it gave me a direction to work as hard and learn as much as I could. I took hold of opportunities coming my way along the journey and went with them. Iโve also learnt how important our values are. The lack of sporting integrity from my first opponent has taught me to stick to my own - perseverance, hard-working and continuous learning. Itโs a test of patience. Thatโs all ultra running is. Just a test of your willingness to wait it out, and to work through low moments. Thatโs it. I think we like to make it seem like a big deal, so that we can come off as some sort of hero. But really, in the end, it all comes down to patience. And persistence. To be sure, running 31 or 50 or 62 or 100+ miles is super far. And none of those distances is a gimme. But Iโd like to say that these classic ultra distances are within reach for all of us. You just have to want it. On my climb out of the canyon today, I ran by a couple of women who were hiking. One of them commented on my Hokas, and you know you should never open up a conversation with this runner about his shoes. Because he will go in โฆ DEEP ๐ So, I slowed down to a walk, and we started sharing thoughts on all things shoes (she was rocking a new pair of La Sportiva). Soon enough, that led to training, which led to ultras, which led to why I was on the trails this morning, namely San Diego 100. She was captivated by the thought of running 100 miles, in the heat, and in the mountains. I explained that, yeah, theyโre tough, and that while what I like to do for โfunโ is hard, anyone can do it. You just have to commit to the process and to the training. In addition, I added, for me the draw to run long distances is for the opportunity to be challenged, to suffer, and to overcome those low points. โIt sounds like if you can get through a 100 miler, you can pretty much do anything,โ she said. She got it. But to get there, youโve gotta learn to be patient โ and persistent. Today, a super easy run/hike: 19.40 mi; 4,393 ft gain @ 13:23/mi and 123 bpm. Peak week #2 in the bank.
