To end #AAPImonth we want to feature " #AsianAmericans Heroes our kids need to know about" #WongKimArk, Chinese American Cook Wong Kim Ark is not a well-known figure in most American history books, but the 1898 landmark decision by the U.S. Supreme Court, known as United States v. Wong Kim Ark, 169 U.S. 649, established an important precedent for birthright citizenship. Wong was a restaurant cook born in San Francisco in 1873 to Chinese immigrant parents. The Naturalization Law of 1802 made Wong’s parents ineligible for U.S. citizenship through naturalization. When Wong visited China as a teen, upon his return to the U.S., he was readmitted without incident. However, several years later, following another return from visiting China, Wong was denied entry because has not considered a U.S. citizen, despite having been born here. Wong was confined for five months on steamships off the coast of San Francisco while his case was being tried. In a landmark 6-2 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court sided in favor of Wong’s claim of birthright citizenship, establishing an important precedent that continues to this day. In celebration of AAPI month The Art Place is featuring a few talented Asian American and Pacific Islander artists who we adore. This post is in honor of Velina Hasu Houston. Velina Hasu Houston is a Japanese American Playwright best known for writing Tea. Tea is a haunting historic play about four Japanese women who are tasked with cleaning their friend’s home after her untimely and tragic passing. The ghost of their friend lingers in the home, and pushes her still living friends to address their discontent. All five women live in the middle of Kansas and are married to members of the military who were stationed in Japan. It is a gorgeous intersectional piece that reminds us of our past, and encourages us to forge new paths for the future. . . . #AAPI #AsianAmerican #AsianAmericanArtist #AsianAmericanWriter #AsianAmericanPlatwright #Informational #AAPIHertiage #AAPIHeritageMonth #JapaneseAmerican

Woman. Warrior. Writer. Joan Kwon Glass! @joan_kwon_glass How did you come to author your life? I am a mixed race, Korean American who grew up in Michigan and South Korea & I am a survivor of religious trauma, familial suicide loss & drug addiction (clean and sober nine years). I refuse to allow systems, events and other people to dictate and dominate the narrative of my life. In my 12-step fellowship, we often use the expression "life on life's terms." Facing the truths of my life and the reality of who I have been, who I am, and who I might become is one that impacts my writing deeply and empowers me to author my life authentically and unapologetically. Joan Kwon Glass is the Korean American author of NIGHT SWIM, winner of the Diode Book Prize (Diode Editions, 2022) & two chapbooks. She serves as poet laureate for Milford, CT, editor in chief for Harbor Review & as a writing instructor for several writing centers. Joan’s poems have been featured or are forthcoming in Poetry Daily, The Slowdown, Poetry Northwest, Cherry Tree Lit, Ninth Letter, Asian American Writer’s Workshop (The Margins), Tahoma Literary Review, Prairie Schooner, Salamander, Texas Review & elsewhere. She lives in coastal Connecticut with her family. @tessahulls Confronts Family History in ‘Feeding Ghosts’ - The graphic novelist’s expansive memoir charts three generations of women in her family, set against the political and social upheaval of 20th century China. - full artist interview by @jaskeimig at southseattleemerald.con /// In Tessa Hulls’ graphic memoir Feeding Ghosts, time, memory, and truth all twist, bend, and cross paths with one another as she tells the story of her grandmother, her mother, and herself over the past 100 years. During the 2020 protests and formation of CHOP, Hulls’ informational comics went viral for their clarity and directness. That same keen, observational eye and ability to cut right to the heart of her subject is on full display in her 10-years-in-the-making Feeding Ghosts, which is a blistering, emotional, and dense read on family. The threads in this story are many. There is Hulls’ grandmother, Sun Yi, a dissident Shanghai journalist who fled mainland China for Hong Kong during the Communist revolution, who wrote a best-selling (and, until recently, untranslated) memoir about her scandalous life and then descended into the thick of mental illness until her death. There is Hulls’ half-white mother, Rose, who was educated at Hong Kong’s top school, immigrated to America, and served as Sun Yi’s caretaker throughout her entire life. And finally, there’s Tessa, a self-described cowboy who at first traveled far and away from her emotions and controlling mother, but is now confronting the generations of trauma winding from her grandmother to her mother to herself. Ahead of the book’s March 5 publishing date and Hulls’ Town Hall appearance, the Emerald jumped on the phone to chat with Hulls about the book, how to navigate the truth, and why Hulls isn’t excited for Feeding Ghosts to be out there in the world. /// From “Feeding Ghosts” by Tessa Hulls. #SouthSeattleEmerald #SouthSeattle #SouthEndSeattle #CommunityJournalist #CommunityJournalism #AsianAmericanArtist #AsianAmericanArtists #AsianAmericanWriter #AsianAmericanWriters #GraphicNovel #GraphicNovels #VisualArtist #VisualArtists #ComicBook #ComicBooks #AsianArtist #AsianArtists #AsianWriter @townhall_seattle

AMERICAN PANDA by Gloria Chao . I love this book. It's so raw and honest and sincere. If 'Kari' suffered from 'intrusive' thoughts, 'American Panda' thrives from it. Mei has just gotten into MIT at the age of seventeen. The over-achieving Asian kid of immigrant parents, Mei's conversations with her parents are mostly one-sided, her honest thoughts being privy only to the readers. Despite the stereotype of the Asian tiger parents, the author seems to want us to understand that they are also a product of their time. Mei has a complicated relationship with her mother which is what I love about this book. Struggling between wanting to bond with the mother and keeping the mother at arm's length to protect herself- Mei has all my love and hugs. Her parents are keen on her becoming a doctor but she is a germaphobe. Oh, the burden of second generation Asian Americans! Then enter Darren Takahashi. Cute, Asian American softbois in YA novels are my weakness. Another thing I love about this novel is how the romance seems only a sub plot and the focus is mostly on Mei's journey of understanding herself and standing up for herself. The book is also quite humorous. Mei is full of funny quips and this is where the intrusive thoughts really work for the novel. I don't usually do ratings but solid 10/10. . . . . . #bookstagram #bookstagramindia #bookstagrammer #bookreview #bookcorner #ya #youngadult #youngadultnovel #asianamericanwriter #asianamericannovel #collegeromance #asianauthors #americanpanda #youngadultromance #womenreading

I first read Andrew Pham’s memoir, Catfish in Mandala, in college over almost 20 years ago in an Asian American literature class. That class and memoir significantly opened my eyes to a distinctive perspective and voice in the Asian diaspora. It was also the first piece of work I read from an Asian American writer besides Amy Tan and Maxine Hong Kingston. I was lucky enough to find his new novel on @netgalley and spend some time with Pham’s words again. This historical fiction novel is about post-WW2 Vietnam, after French and Japanese occupation, when Vietnam is fighting to end colonial rule from the French. The main character, Tuyet is a single mom who runs a shop with her aunt in French Indochina. Yamazaki Takeshi, a Japanese captain, is stationed in Vietnam and seeks Tuyet’s guidance and friendship in the village. What evolves is love amidst war and rebellion. When Japan loses the war, Takeshi ends up fighting for the independence of Vietnam on the communist side, and the reader is immersed in the story of these two characters navigating a time of unrest and change. Pham’s writing can be clunky at times with the dialogue and historical information, but that’s about the only fault I found. I am grateful to read a book about a time typically not written about in Vietnam. There are heavy themes about the history of colonialism and violence while also being filled with rich descriptions of the landscape, food, customs, and the romantic relationship between the two. I really enjoyed the strong and resilient women characters as well as the badass, Takeshi. Thank you @netgalley and @w.w.norton for the digital advance copy! This one will be out January 23! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 stars

(Reflection) Heartbreaking yet disjointed, The Writing on my Forehead feels like a journey incomplete. The novel tells the story of Saira, a second-generation American whose family hailed from India and Pakistan. Her whole life tells a story of hushed familial conflicts involving shame, secrets and reputation. . Saira was raised in a conservative family whose parents were mostly concerned about what others would say. She was a bit rebellious, mainly because she was born after her eldest sister, Ameena, who was deemed beautiful, obedient and responsible. Her whole life, she had to tell herself that she inherited the features of her father and grandfather just to survive the lack of affections. She then compensated by pursuing talent and intelligence, which she eventually succeeded. The contrast to her sister, though, simmered and continued to anger her well into adulthood. . ‘Who would marry you?’ their mother often asked. Marriage is a priority for mothers in society like hers who forbid them from associating with boys in school BUT expect them to get husbands once they turn eighteen. Irony at its best. Parents would fly back to Pakistan should their husband-hunting fail in America in the effort of securing their children’s engagement. More eligible bachelors to meet, more potential mother-in-laws to please. Women who did not feel the urge to be married were often-told that they would change their mind. The novel showcases in details the downside to living in a conservative family where a daughter can never bee good enough. Everything must be policed. Showing too much emotions means you are shameless. Going out alone means you are up to no good. Reading this part of the novel was so exasperating as autonomy is not something that is appreciated in the story. . “Refugee, exile, immigrant- whatever species of displaced human we were, we did not simply live in two cultures, as celebrants of the great American melting pot imagined. Displaced people also lived in two time zones, the here and the there, the present and the past, being as we were reluctant time travelers.” • Narrated by an unnamed double agent, this book combines elements of the spy novel, immigration/diaspora writing, dark comedy, historical fiction, satire, and political novel. The novel takes place mostly as a confession by this agent, written to the Vietnamese communist army. There’s also a segment where the narrator tries to guide a white American filmmaker in his casting/directorial decisions about the Vietnam war which—and his efforts weren’t very successful. He might also have been involved in a set “accident” for offending said filmmaker. • Viet Thanh Nguyen’s an author that’s been on my list for years, one I’d been putting off reading because I was daunted by his book, and the thing that finally made me pick up The Sympathizer was (of course) my seeing him in this year’s SWF lineup. I was right to be daunted by his book: it was genius, but also difficult, discomforting, and at times disorienting. There were so many arguments he made in this book that resonated with me, arguments against US imperialism and colonialism and how these things are continuing in the Asia-Pacific even today. There was critique of the US domination over and erasure or obfuscation of minority voices and narratives to serve its own. [cont.]

A Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir that has been likened to Patti Smith's Just Kids, no less, Hua Hsu's Stay True is a book about loving art and music, not fitting in, and living with loss. When Hua, the son of Taiwanese immigrants and a student at Berkeley, first meets Japanese-American frat boy Ken, he isn’t enamoured. But the two soon bond over the sense that US culture has not yet made a space for either of them; becoming friends over a series of late-night conversations over cigarettes, long drives, and the embarrassments and victories of college life. And then, Ken is gone, killed senselessly in a car-jacking. Now a writer and academic in his 40s, Hua Hsu looks back at a coming-of-age cut short, immortalising a beautiful platonic love affair, and contemplating his own life-long search for meaning and belonging.

9/25/2023, 8:10:59 AM

“The first generation thinks about survival; the ones that follow tell the stories. I often try to spin the details and small effects of my parents lives into a narrative.” • “I wanted to impose structure on all that had come before that July night, turning the past into something architectural, a palace of memories to wander at my own leisure.” • In Stay True, Hua Hsu looks back mostly on his college days, of when he first met Ken and their rough start before becoming close friends despite their differences. After leaving one of Ken’s parties early, Hua wonders why none of his friends have heard from him over the weekend—and then they learn that Ken had been killed in a carjacking. Out of grief and guilt, Hua isolates himself and retreats into art, into his zines and nostalgia, trying to make sense and find meaning out of a meaningless act of violence that has left his friend group in tatters. • This book is as much about growing up in America in those days as a child of immigrants, as it is a platonic love letter to a friend gone too soon. The author recreates those scenes of long car rides with friends, playing music in the car on those trips, late night conversations while smoking cigarettes, the way he and Ken made space for each other in their lives, despite being so different. While Hua was the odd one who tried his best to and prided himself in being different, Ken was “mainstream” and comfortable with himself, not trying to prove anything to anyone. [cont.]

Meet Woman. Warrior. Writer. Sonora Jha! How did you come to author your life? I didn’t know it for years, but writing was a way for me to dive into my lived experience and live it again at another level, as a more evolved version of myself. Whether I wrote as a journalist or academic or an essayist and novelist, the written word told me truths I hadn’t quite encountered in the actual living of my days. When I wrote my own story, in my memoir, I thought I was doing it to share myself with others (thoughts on feminist motherhood), but it brought me into a sisterhood and motherhood with myself. Writing became a re-parenting and a love letter to the girl I was, the woman I am, the elder I will be. Check out and subscribe to my monthly Woman. Warrior. Sibani is a Nepali-American gender and environment specialist at the World Bank and a children’s books author. She embraces her identity as ever-changing and -evolving and finds belonging to two cultures to be a beautiful thing which is what inspired her to write”Momo and Yeti,” a story about Momo who travels from Nepal to the Big Apple in search for Uncle Yeti. When she’s not writing tales of friendly yetis and adventurous momos, Sibani’s day-to-day work at the World Bank involves looking for ways to increase women’s human endowment and leadership in forest communities. This Pulitzer Prize winning memoir is written with such intelligence, reflection, and heart. The last fifty or so pages were excruciating - it broke and mended my heart again and again. • The power of human connection and friendship hangs on every single written word. It is a story of the search for self and the never ending solace that can be found through art, family, loved ones, and therapy. Healing is an ongoing and, at times, surprising journey. Thank you, Hua Hsu for sharing your story with us - you are a gift. . . . . . #staytrue #staytruethememoir #staytruethebook #staytruebook #friendship #loss #guilt #grief #family #humanconnection #asianamerican #huahsu #amemoir #asianamericanwriters #asianamericanwriter #americanwriters #americanwriter #pulitzer #pulitzerprize #pulitzerprizewinner

Meet Woman. Warrior. Writer. Wendy Chin-Tanner! How did you come to author your life? I was called to write at a very young age and was fortunate enough to find some early success in high school and college. In my senior year, I was approached by a literary agent. It wasn’t a good fit, and I took this as a sign that I wasn’t meant to be a writer after all. I went back to graduate school to study sociology and stayed in academia for almost a decade before the birth of my older daughter prompted me to write again. I wrote my first poetry collection on maternity leave and I haven’t stopped since. Wendy Chin-Tanner is the author of the novel KING OF THE ARMADILLOS and the poetry collections TURN and ANYONE WILL TELL YOU. She is the editor of EMBODIED: An Intersectional Feminist Comics Poetry Anthology and cofounder of A Wave Blue World, an independent publishing company for socially conscious graphic novels. Born and raised in NYC, she was educated at Cambridge University, UK and lives with her family in the Hudson Valley. https://drstephaniehan.substack.com/p/woman-warrior-writer-c0b Subscribe to the monthly Woman. To end #AAPImonth we want to feature " #AsianAmericans Heroes our kids need to know about" #GraceLeeBoggs, Taishanese American Author, Philosopher and Feminist Born in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1915, to Chinese immigrant parents from Taishan, China, Grace Lee Boggs was a prominent Chinese American author, social activist, philosopher, and feminist. She was on the frontlines of social change in the 1940s and 1950s, and in the 1960s, she and her husband James Boggs—a Black writer and community organizer—were important figures in the fight for social justice for minority communities. Lee Boggs is best known for her book, The Next American Revolution: Sustainable Activism for the Twenty-First Century, and she is regarded as a key figure in the development of the Asian American movement and identity. BOOK REFLECTION: Four Treasures of the Sky (Jenny Tinghui Zhang) Oof. This is not an easy read. But, then again, I don’t think it’s supposed to be. In her author’s note, Zhang writes, “My hope is that this book brings the United States’ history of anti-Chinese violence out of the scholarship and research and into our collective memory.” That purpose is absolutely evident in the story. I learned very little about this part of American history in school, and what I did learn was certainly white-washed. This novel puts some of the awful realities of that experience right in front of the reader…and that is weighty to take in. It’s also impossible not to see the book as social commentary on the racial tension of our own times: from the treatment Asian Americans, especially Chinese Americans, have faced throughout the pandemic to the cloud of racial injustice that hangs over policing in our country, Zhang points to patterns that have been historically buried, though they’ve never died. This book is definitely not for all readers: in the course of reflecting these horrific pieces of our history and culture, it contains many potential triggers. Due to its tragic and heavy content, it’s hard to say I “enjoyed” it. The writing, though, is beautiful, and I found it easy to latch on to Daiyu and to want to see how things turn out for her. My favorite element, though, was the use of calligraphy as a motif throughout the text - the idea of the Four Treasures, the explanations of individual Chinese characters, the connection between forming a character and living a life - I found this to be a lovely component of the text. Suggested Pairings: -Grace (Paul Lynch) -Whiskey When We’re Dry (John Larison) -Oliver Twist (Charles Dickens) -The Good Thief (Hannah Tinti) #bookreflection #bookreview #fourtreasuresofthesky #asianamericanpacificislanderheritagemonth #asianamericanwriter #chineseamericanwriter #chineseamericanhistory #chineseexclusionact #chinesefolklore #igetmyhistoryfromfiction #historicalfiction #immigrantstories #eclecticreader #readersofinstagram #bookstagram

Happy publication day to MEET ME TONIGHT IN ATLANTIC CITY by Jane Wong (@paradeofcats)!!! Jane is one of my favorite poets and I can’t overstate how excited I am to read her new memoir about growing up as a Chinese takeout restaurant baby on the Jersey shore, about her mother’s strength and love, her father’s gambling addiction, about the myth of the American dream. I read just the first chapter this morning, and already I’m struck so deeply by the fire and tenderness with which she writes: “The slice dangles on her knife, the glinting steel close to my mouth. I eat it off the knife. I’ve always eaten fruit this way, right off the sparks of my mother’s blade.” Such a powerful opening to the book! I cannot wait to continue reading—look out for more thoughts soon. Thank you so much to Jane and Tin House (@tin_house) for this beautiful package! P.S. feast your eyes on that scrumptious ceramic dumpling Jane made 😋! • • • • • #MeetMeTonightInAtlanticCity #JaneWong #AsianAmericanLiterature #ChineseAmericanLiterature #AsianAmericanBooks #AAPIHeritageMonth #BookPhotography #BookBlogger #PoetryLover #Poetry #Poet #AsianAmericanWriter #DiversifyBookstagram #AsianAmericanReaders #AsianAmericanBookstagrammer #LGBTQBookstagram #queerbookstagrammer

On the @dailyorange today! 🍊 Shoutout to my colleagues @nateleid & @suejibee17 as well! #asiansolidarity Debra Kue is a self-described bookworm. She was an avid reader since early childhood, diving into all sorts of stories. But as she got older, Kue realized she didn’t see herself in the books she was reading. Even stories about young Asian American girls weren’t representative of her experiences and her Hmong American community. “I came to writing primarily through wanting to hear a voice that actually represented my experiences, which was pretty challenging to find,” Kue said. “I figured if I’m having all of these kinds of questions and searching for something to relate to, I think other people are as well.” Kue, now a published author and doctoral candidate in English at Syracuse University, ties much of her work back to the experiences of Hmong Americans. Her research connects 19th century literature and transcendentalism with understanding the Hmong American experience. When she set out to explore Hmong American identities with her doctoral research, Kue knew that many people in the United States didn’t know too much about the history of the Hmong relationship with America. When the U.S. withdrew from the Vietnam War, the communist regimes in that part of Southeast Asia “essentially decreed genocide” on the Hmong people due to their support and work with the U.S. military, Kue said. Michelle Alyssa Go By Jieun Ko On December 29, 1981, as a new year burned on the horizon, Michelle Alyssa Go was beautifully brought into this world. She was born to Marjorie and Justin Go, her beloved mother and father, in Berkeley, California. On January 15, 2022, on a rainy, Saturday morning, Michelle Alyssa Go was violently murdered. She was brutally shoved by Martial Simon, a 62-year-old man, a stranger, in front of a southbound, oncoming R train at the 42nd Street Subway Station in New York City. #michellealyssago #protectasianwomen #stopasianhate

Considering the way I had the biggest writer crush on Ted Chiang since I read his Stories of Your Life collection, I can’t believe it took me all these years to pick up Exhalation—and what finally pushed me to pick it up was finding out he’s one of the SWF writers. Maybe part of why I procrastinated so much was I was afraid my reading capacity might have atrophied a little from being out of school for a number of years and worrying I wouldn’t be able to grasp the threads of his stories, and I’m so relieved to be wrong. Or at least, I was glad I could enjoy and love these stories as much as (or perhaps more than) I enjoyed Stories of Your Life back in 2019. • Exhalation is a collection of stories that explore questions of free will, entropy, time & prophecy, parallel worlds, artificial life and how it can count as “life” in the eyes of humanity. I can’t possibly do justice to this collection in a review; there’s something about his stories and the way he writes the worlds he sets them in that’s poignant and beautiful, that makes me love science again in a way that my science classes in school couldn’t (or more likely they battered my adolescent love for science out of me). Chiang’s works manage to elegantly fuse science with philosophy/humanity in a way that gives us compelling stories whose essence will stay with us even if the plot and characters slip from memory. I think my favourites from this collection, at the top of my head, are “The Merchant and the Alchemist’s Gate”, “Exhalation”, “Omphalos,” and “Anxiety is the Dizziness of Freedom.” Anyway, some day I’d like to reread both his collections (and whatever newer stuff he has out, fingers crossed) and review each story individually. Don’t hold me to this though, I’m very lazy 😅

I just finished the first book of this series (Jade War) by @fonda.lee and I'm soooo in love with the story, the characters, the world everything!! I highly highly recommend! Can we have a movie / TV show of this now??? The series is like the Godfather but with magic, with clan rivalries battling over control of the city and the limited supply of magical jade. But at its heart, it's really a story of family and the complex interrelationships between blood ties, power and honor.

Pondering a photo book, but like many things, I put a lot of stuff on hold while I've been focusing on work and many life events this year. We'll see where life goes. 2nd photo - Beautiful blanket given to me by @jaruantoramirez, from his home Ilacano Village.
