Some of the greatest storytellers in the world were born in the Appalachians. Charismatic characters entertained and astounded audiences with accounts of bears and rattlesnakes of prodigious size, hoop snakes that could roll up hill, hunting dogs of unparalleled toughness, and stories about outsmarting the devil. Before the advent of radio and television, storytelling took place in the home, school yard, workplace, barber shop, general store and even in the street. Appalachian story forms included personal narratives, myths of the Cherokee, complex murder ballads, tales of northern Europe, exaggerated hunting stories, and legends about local residents. Traditional storytellers enhanced their style through the use of traditional speech patterns common to the region. Appalachian speech, with its Anglo-Saxon verb forms, double negatives and unique pronunciation, along with vivid metaphorical phrases, enriched the regionā€™s spoken and written expression. Appalachian stories often paralleled those found in other regions of America and even throughout the world. Similar characters and plot lines were passed down through storytelling in the British Isles, Africa, Russia, and other parts of Europe. However, mountain people were arguably the most charismatic chroniclers, best porch swing poets, and long-winded raconteurs in the world. #micavilleoutpost #appalachianapparitions #appalachianfolklore #blueridgemountains

Hydrophyllum spp. Waterleaf. There are ten hydrophyllum species in North America. Interestingly, they are in the Borage family. These native plants grow along wet stream banks in loamy, rich forest soils and form a beautiful ground cover in Spring. They are easily grown in a moist, shady forest garden, and are edible and magical to behold. I love how they look as if they have truly been marked by their elemental namesake, water. . . . Their unopened flower buds and leaves are edible and white fuzzy, are good mixed with other greens. I like to cook mine with Sochan, some plantain, a few dandelions, basswood leaves, and violets. They are a long time indigenous food and also medicinal plant in Menominee, Iroquois, Ojibwa, Cowlitz, and many more nation's traditions. The roots are also important in Okanagan history and are eaten and used as medicine. . . . I steam the young leaves for a few minutes and dress them with butter and vinegar. They are native so be mindful as always if you meet them in the wild to tread lightly. A shady corner of the yard, or on an edge just might be a sweet home for them if you'd like to support their proliferating! . . . They are so striking. Thank you Waterleaf. . . . #forager #foraging #wildfood #witch #witchcraft #hedgecraft #hedgewitch #appalachianfolklore

Appalachian Indie Author Book Review: I grew up in Tonyā€™s part of the world, so this story is a nostalgia Iā€™m not sure I can express. @tonyevanshorror spun this take on mountain folklore with an accurate Kentucky dialect and rural survival skills. When two paranormal investigators from Chicago chase their adrenaline fix into the isolation deep in the Appalachian Mountains, they find manners mean a lot in the South. Iā€™ve grown up listening to SE Kentucky Folktales from my Granny, and Tony Evans stuck true to his roots, weaving a sinister tale full of unsettling truths. Rules I grew up learning because of the same folkloreā€“donā€™t judge a book by its cover, rules are in place to keep you safe, and good manners and respecting your elders arenā€™t an option. Folktale took me right back to my childhood, wandering through the mountain hollers, looking for the magic in my backyard. As I sit here on my back porch, sipping on a little shine, Iā€™m looking at the fly, trying to steal a nip of my drink a little differently. How many horseflies have I killed in my life? Thanks for unlocking that unknown fear, Tony! #booksofhorror #appalachianfolklore #appalachianfolkhorror #kentuckyproud

The history of tarot cards is a fascinating journey that spans centuries and involves various cultures. While the exact origins of tarot cards are shrouded in mystery, it is believed that they originated in the 15th century, likely in Italy or France. The earliest known tarot decks were created as a game, similar to modern-day playing cards. These early decks, known as "tarocchi" in Italian, were used for entertainment and gaming purposes among the nobility. Tarot decks of this time consisted of four suits, similar to playing cards, but also included additional cards known as "triumphs" or "trumps," which depicted allegorical scenes with symbolic imagery. The use of tarot cards for divination and esoteric purposes likely began in the 18th century with books linking the cards to mystical and occult practices. One of the most influential works was "Le Monde Primitif" by Antoine Court de GĆ©belin, published in 1781, suggested that tarot cards held ancient Egyptian knowledge. Another significant figure in the history of tarot cards is the occultist and ceremonial magician, Eliphas Levi, who in the 19th century linked the tarot cards to the Kabbalistic Tree of Life and the four elements of alchemy, further enhancing the cards' mystical and esoteric significance. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, interest in the tarot experienced a revival with the publication of the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck, created by artist Pamela Colman Smith and occultist A.E. Waite. This deck, first published in 1909, featured detailed illustrations on each card, with imagery rich in symbolism, making it one of the most popular and influential tarot decks of all time. Tarot cards have become widely used for divination, meditation, and spiritual growth, with practitioners drawing on the rich history and symbolism of the cards to gain insight into themselves and the world around them. #Crone #WitchcraftTips #WitchyWisdom #WitchTips #WitchyPractice #WitchWays #WitchResources #WitchCommunity #WitchyHelp #WitchMagicTips #WitchySpells #Witch #WitchesOfInstagram #WitchTipsFromAWitch #AppalachianWitchcraft #AppalachianFolklore #Witchcraft #Pagan #WitchyThings #AppalachianWitch

Vendor Spotlight šŸ›ø @appalachianhuntsman Appalachian Huntsman is a small batch seasoning company founded by a native West Virginian with a passion for cooking, cryptids, and Appalachia. In late 2019 they gathered a group of Appalachian artists and BBQ Knowledge and developed their first commercially available BBQ rub made with WVā€™s own salt from an Ancient lake that was once there, thanks to the JQ Dickinson salt company. All of their blends have taken years to perfect, and theyā€™ve recently curtailed into the hot sauce market, while still keeping everything as Appalachian as possible. They grow a massive garden of peppers, so every sauce is perfectly crafted. They hope to see their packets on your stove or grill as soon as youā€™ll have them, until then, theyā€™ll be grilling with their shop dogs, making your next perfect blend. Crows in Appalachia: Good Omens and Bad Omens Growing up in the heart of Appalachia, I learned that birds were often tied to omensā€”both good and bad. Among them, crows stood out the most, with a rich tapestry of folklore surrounding these feathered friends(or foes?). Note:While birds in general hold significance in Appalachian culture, crows stand out prominently, embodying a rich tapestry of both positive and negative omens. Embrace the wisdom of the crows as they soar through the mountains, carrying tales of both light and shadow. Antebellum slavery is most often associated with the Deep South, but Central Appalachia had a thriving slave trade. Nearly every Appalachian county had a slave auction block at their local courthouse. Slavery was primarily industrial in nature, with slaves being brought to the mountains explicitly to mine. Some of Appalachiaā€™s first slave owners were actually Cherokee. Poet Frank X. Walker coined the term ā€œAfrilachian,ā€ to refer to a unique part of the Appalachian and African American experience. Food was one of the more powerful representations of this exchange of culture. Sorghum cane, introduced early from Africa, graced many a biscuit baked in Appalachia. ā€œCaneā€ has been mistakenly identified as a Native American contribution to Appalachian cookery, but itā€™s another marker of the Afrilachian influence. Sweet potatoes, okra and red peppers were cross over crops already popular in Africa, as were field peas, watermelons, muskmelons and sorghum. Every guinea hen on an Appalachian farm, every banjo that was ever played, every sorghum mill that crushed cane in early autumn, and every gourd birdhouse swinging from a tree branch had roots in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Afrilachian contributions to mountain heritage and culture included the construction of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The parkway was conceived, designed and built during a period of racial segregation. The original designs for the parkway reflected that period, with separate recreational facilities planned for people of color. There were even segregated camps for the black men who helped clear land for the parkway. Occasionally, these men found small cemeteries containing unmarked graves which were believed to belong to enslaved individuals. One out of every three Appalachian whites with substantial farms held enslaved people, and one in ten of the regionā€™s antebellum workforce was enslaved. These Afrilachian families imparted a lasting cultural influence on the region that has enriched the lives of whites for generations. #micavilleoutpost #appalachianapparitions #blueridgemountains #appalachianfolklore

I realized the limits of instagram with my last post: I forget people are not familiar with my work and a little info-graphic alone cannot communicate the huge breadth of history and nuance each plant holds. I'd like to break down my own understanding of the history of the folk practice I have dedicated myself to and make more clear the foundations of how I have come to understand the lore of plants in my bioregion. . Let's begin in the 1500ā€™s: the arrival of the Spanish and the people from Africa they had enslaved. When the Spanish arrived on North American soil they believed in Roman humoral medicine as well as Christian medical ideologies. This was then combined with Native American healing modalities from the many diverse groups of people the Europeans encountered and colonized, as well as the healing ways of the enslaved peoples they had forcibly brought with them, who in Appalachia, largely came from West Africa. . More cultures from Europe would eventually further augment this strange and painful cauldron of folk magic and healing by arriving in the 1700-1800s. The folk beliefs brought by the English, Scots- Irish, the Scottish, the Irish and the Germans all influenced Appalachian Folk magic and medicine. The unique climate and types of diseases that people faced in the mountains acted as the final shaping tool of the magic of this place: a strange spoon to stir this folkloric soup. . This is a much simplified way of looking at this complex history, yet the thing is most like to share is that Appalachian folk ways are a stool with three legs: Indigenous, African and European. If you look closely you can pick up the threads from a story, a spell, a song and follow them back to their home of origin. These are the stories that have built the lore of the plants in our region. . . #forager #foraging #witches #traditionalwitch #appalachianfolkmagic #witchcraft #appalachia #appalachianfolklore #folkmagic #oldways #folkmedicine #appalachianfolkmedicine

NEW EPISODE DROPS TOMORROW! ITS BEEN A WHOLE YEAR SINCE WE STARTED THIS THING! To celebrate our one year anniversary, weā€™re kicking off our series on everyoneā€™s favorite cryptidā€¦The Mothman. I was hesitant to do this series for a while because so many have done it better than us and everyone knows the stories. But some may not know the stories within the stories. The UFOs, the Men in Black, Indrid Cold, or the subject of this weeks episode, Chief Cornstalk, and the curse he laid upon the area of Point Pleasant. Part one drops tomorrow wherever you get your podcasts so be sure to check it out! #mothman #mothmanprophecies #cryptid #cryptids #cryptidpodcast #paranormal #paranormalpodcast #chiefcornstalk #cornstalkscurse #pointpleasant #pointpleasantwv #appalachianfolklore #flatwoodsmonster

Appalachian Folklore- Omens, Signs and Superstitions Nancy Richmond & Misty Murray Walkup āļøāļøāļøāļøāļø This book is very interesting! A very quick read but also very funny as well. Growing up in the Appalachian area I have been told some of the ā€œsayingsā€ that are listed in the book. Growing up, my parents always called them ā€œold sayingsā€ or ā€œthe old timers always said ā€¦ā€ If youā€™re into this sort of thing, itā€™s a great and quick read!! #bookstagram #appalachian #appalachianfolklore #bookstagrammer #readingaddict #booknerd
