I'm used to seeing the National Museum of Women in the Arts done up for weddings, but last night I got to photograph something entirely different when Pretty Boi Drag took the stage for NMWA Nights! It was pretty fantastic. Bonus amusing wedding photographer life moment? The evening's DJ was the fab @lestalusan, who I met many years ago while photographing a wedding. Hey everyone! There’s lots of new faces here so I figured I would ✨re-introduce✨ myself 🫶🏻 My name is Kennedy and I’m the face you’ll see behind the camera! I started Find Your Freedom Photography in 2020 after hobby photographing for about 10 years. I started my journey with landscapes, nature, played with macro photography and had wanted to be a photo-journalist leaving high school. In 2016 I moved from Manitoba to Vancouver and worked with some amazing artists and was super inspired by what everyone was doing with their artistic passions so I got a better camera and started playing around with manual settings. After a year I moved to Vancouver Island, met my amazing fiancé, settled in for a couple years and built a small community of amazzzing friends and chosen family, then- I decided to make my dreams a reality! I put out model calls, created all my social pages and researched new gear and now here we are! I’ve been published 6 times, once internationally, have had hundreds upon hundreds of amazing clients. I get to travel with this being my career and capture some of life’s most important moments for all of you. There were just *so* many beautiful and hilarious moments throughout their day. I guess that’s what you get when you bring two families together and a pocket of their community featuring off-duty drag queens who effortlessly know how to uplift and connect a whole crowd of people that’ve just met! Their ceremony by @customcelebrations_by_dee was just this — completely moving with sprinkles of hilarity, which is clearly impossible not to do because they’re a seriously funny couple. They have a clear knack for knowing exactly when to share a laugh or lend a comforting shoulder, effortlessly navigating the spectrum of emotions together. It was delightful to witness 🥹 It’s no secret that we’re an all-queer team. So when we get to capture weddings that really bring meaning to the term ~rainbow family, it means a lot. We were already in love with Thomas and Bryce’s story, but after hearing it again from the perspective of their parents, it brought a tear to the eye to see just how much they wholeheartedly embraced their children and it was truly moving, to say the least. The pinnacle of the night, though, was easily when Bryce sang with @orlandocombo for Thomas at their reception, saying he always wanted to dedicate a piece on his wedding night to his husband. I knew something was special about this shoot when I stepped into Verdure (my favorite flower shop in Brooklyn) with a list of flowers that I needed for a shoot. Dez—one of the owners—asked me what they were for and I showed him the mood board for the shoot on Pinterest. He immediately got emotional, and shared with me that despite owning a flower shop, he’s only received flowers once in his life. He recounted the experience to me and said that it’s rare, sadly, to see images like these. It’s so important, he said, that men, especially Black men, receive flowers, see images of themselves depicted as soft, tender, and vulnerable, and he wished me a lot of luck with the shoot. His words reminded me that images, stories, and narratives have power. I don’t know how he was touched that day, but I carried his testimony with me to set, and it set the tone for how I approached imaging the Black trans men featured in this project.
