The idea of Christian complementarianism as biblical is NEW! Like, the same age as me (37). I learned this when I read @kkdumez’s book Jesus and John Wayne (which I also recommend reading, by the way). When I ascribed to white evangelicalism, I had no idea just how new much of the theology and worldview is in the grand scheme of Christianity. And I see this as a good thing because we can course correct! What is complementarianism? It’s what #harrisonbutker was advocating for in his graduation speech. According to Wikipedia, in this view, “A husband is considered to have the God-given responsibility to provide for, protect, and lead his family. A wife is to collaborate with her husband, respect him, and serve as his helper in managing the household and nurturing the next generation.” This view of relationships is limiting for women and men. Research shows that hierarchy in relationships increases the risk of abuse. Whether we agree with the sentiment or not, “shinning city on a hill” has been used in social and political discourse as a reference to America and American exceptionalism. Many politicians have used “shining city on a hill” when talking about America and its destiny with President Regan the most prolific. But where did they get this idea? They base it on sermon “A model of Christian Charity,” from John Winthrop in 1630, just before he and his colonists set sail for America. He wrote, “For we must consider that we shall be as a city on a hill, the eyes of all people are upon us. So that if we shall deal falsely with our God in this work we have undertaken, and so cause Him to withdraw His present help from us, we shall be made a story and a by-word through the world.” In other words, Winthrop is issuing a warning that if they mess up, they will become a by-word for mess ups. But where is all the talk about greatness and exceptionalism? The truth is all that nationalism baggage is a modern injection. Winthrop's sermon was forgotten for nearly 200 years until it was published in 1839. It remained an obscure reference until Cold War era political leaders reinterpreted the event, crediting Winthrop's text, erroneously, as the foundational document of the idea of American exceptionalism and Christian statehood. So to use this verse and Winthrop’s words as proof of America as a great Christian nation is just nationalistic idolatry. It puts Christians in the position of trying to serve two masters. Christianity and a nation require differing and often competing demands. A nation has borders that it tries to defend and ultimately acts out of selfishness, always with an eye out for what is best for itself. A Christian has the dividing walls broken down by Jesus and lives for the sake of the other. It’s a life marked by sacrifice and putting others first, something no nation could do and survive. When people push the agenda of making America a Christian nation or try to make laws with Christianity as its rationale, it should cause concern. Christian nationalism, insisting America is a “shining city on a hill,” is idolatry that destroys church and nation.

Our feeds are often marked by so much suffering that it can be difficult to see beauty and life. We find it genuinely the case that if we are apart from God - not grounded in His love, steadfast in His justice, then we can be tempted to think that all hope is lost. But as the flowers bloom, birds begin to sing, and new shoots sprout forth, we are reminded that joy comes in the morning, his mercies are new every day, trouble doesn't last always, and to everything there is a season. “My decision has been made. I have consecrated myself entirely to Jesus son of Mary.” - Kateri Tekakwitha (1656-1680), Prophetic Witness Tekakwitha was born in a Mohawk village in the region now called upstate New York. A smallpox epidemic devastated her village when Tekakwitha was a child. Her family was killed and she was left an orphan with damaged eyesight and a face scarred from the disease. She was adopted by relatives and met a French Jesuit missionary at age 11. When the Mohawks defeated Mohican invaders, the Jesuit missionary pleaded for mercy for the captives. The influence of the Jesuit’s faith had a deep impact on Tekakwitha throughout her teenage years. By age 18, she asked to study the Christian catechism and to be baptized. At her baptism, she was given the name ‘Kateri,’ a form of the name ‘Catherine’ in honor of Catherine of Siena. Other Mohawks interpreted her new faith as a form of sorcery and she was forced to live with other Christian converts at a Jesuit mission south of Montreal. She had long avoided marriage and decided to commit herself entirely to the Lord’ service. “For a long time, my decision on what I will do has been made.” she said. “I have consecrated myself entirely to Jesus, son of Mary, I have chosen Him for husband, and He alone will take me for wife.” She devoted the rest of her life to committed prayer and fasting for her people. What I've learned about American Christians. . Since the Roman empire, the empire realized that Christianity was it's greatest weapon for amassing power. . There was absolutely 0 belief in eternal conscious torment until the Roman empire needed to co-opt the Christian faith to consolidate power and control people. From there, the propaganda began, and Dante's inferno became our genocidal fear panic frantic obsession. . These doctrines have consequences. . They dissociate Christians from life. Not the international women’s day content I had planned, but is what needed to be said today. I could never have grown up to have a life that looks like the one that @senkatiebritt portrayed last night because that life doesn’t exist in reality, even for the women who align with her worldview. We all have our secrets, the parts of ourselves that we shove into the shadow in order to continue to perform womanhood in that way, to find belonging in that culture. In Luke 8, Jesus says, “For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open.” In reality, there are so many ways to be a faithful Christian woman. There’s no honest way to end this sentence: “Christian women don’t (fill in the blank).” Because Christian women have all kinds of experiences and make all kinds of decisions, it’s just that only some are considered acceptable to discuss in polite company. In the Katie Britt version of motherhood, there are so many pieces of our lives and experiences that we aren’t allowed to speak of. One of the reasons why Troubling the Water by @officialbenmcbride is powerful is because he is asking questions of formation. It’s not, “what do I need to do?” It’s “who do I need to become?” When we work on our becoming, on being formed in a certain direction, our actions flow from the core of who we are. I started this book club to provide some kind of antidote to the despair I feel when I think about the state of things. So yes, the Year of Belonging is about reading. But it’s also about formation. Who can I become when I am surrounded by a community of people who are also curious to explore their own relationship with belonging, internally and with the world around us? Why do you talk so much about Israel? I get that question a lot. My answer, a mix of general observations and Christian beliefs, is worth posting here: 1. Because Jerusalem is the center of everything, and what happens there affects the rest of the world, whether we like it or not — and it’s not going away. 2. Because Western engagement with the Near East must start with Jerusalem, the sole rivet that binds the two regions at the cultural, intellectual, and spiritual level, i.e. the West was formed by Christianity and Christianity came from the Jews. 3. Because I believe that the people and land of Israel – not the state, mind you – were supernaturally chosen to play a unique role in history, and remain the root of my faith and thus my identity. 4. Because the Jews are an indigenous nation of the Near East, and every nation deserves to live in its homeland. 5. Because Israel, while hardly divine, is essentially moral and just as far as states go. 6. Because it is possible to be “biased” towards Israel while being just and compassionate towards Palestinians — this is not zero-sum. 7. Because Israel’s security is the single best barometer of the region’s health. Joe Biden was right when he said in 2021, “Until the region says unequivocally, they acknowledge the right of Israel to exist as an independent Jewish state, there will be no peace.” 8. I was here before. Maybe you're there now. Imploring the god of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob for an answer, met only with silence. Wondering why he seems to go back on so many promises. Maybe you identify with Jonah, wondering, why do the evil prosper and the good suffer? And, like Jonah, you're caught in a trap of conveniently ignoring, or incapable of rectifying, the fact of your own lack of innocence, your lack of deserving. So, what even gives you the right to ask, or question, because you should just be grateful that you know "THE TRUTH" and are going to heaven when all this is over? Grace for all but the faithful, because god rewards either the sinners or the perfect, and as a person who buys into the belief system of the American Evangelical Church, you can't be either of those. I made this painting for the unrewarded faithful (the original has since sold). St. John the Baptist had his head cut off for his faithfulness. Who knows if "heaven" is real, or if we're all trapped in an endless soul-cycle of reincarnation, but I for one got tired of promises of the afterlife as answers for the suffering we experience today. My favorite message of Advent is that God works to birth something new from the darkest places of our lives. As a culture we tend to fear and avoid the darkness. And yet, throughout the Bible we see God over and over again revealing Godself in the darkness, to Job, to Abraham, to Moses, to Solomon... the Holy of Holies, the place where God’s glory was said to dwell was completely dark. In Isaiah 45:3, God says, “I will give you hidden treasures in the darkness.” What if we stopped seeing darkness as bad, and instead saw darkness as holy? Out of the darkness of the womb of a young, vulnerable oppressed girl, came the light of the world, the Christ child. Peace is why I meditate, really. I have experienced anxiety for so long that I often forget that anxiety isn’t me, that it’s possible for me to experience an existence without anxiety. Me being anxious serves me in some ways, I suppose—keeps me on my toes, my body’s way of telling me to stay alert. And so I honor my anxiety, I thank it for trying to keep me safe. And I also know now that there are other ways to live that are more grounded, more sure. Meditation helps me to live more into that space, where my intuition drives me, not my fear. It’s not wrong to seek inner peace even in the midst of intense upheaval internally and in the world. Being grounded and operating from that intuitive place serves the world. And that’s why I meditate, in a nutshell.
