Amos described a familiar situation, where some powerful elites are corrupting the justice system and exploiting the poor. They're immune to law and did whatever it takes to achieve their goals. There were cries for injustice because the weak were being oppressed. Throughout the show, we can sense this deep and intense longing for true justice. We all can relate with this frustation, bitterness and anger. In last week's sermon, the Bible offered a different solution: let God take care of it. Perhaps that sounds like a cliche; it feels weak and unappealing. But remember, church, our God is the most neutral, objective and just judge ever! Vincenzo is limited, that is, he has to gather evidence, rely on others, and need time to build his strategy. Meanwhile, his opponents can often outsmart him or simply flee. With God, His eyes are forever keeping watch. God records every details. He even judges the hidden motivation! He depends on no one, His wisdom knows no bound. None can outsmart him and none can escape His judgement. God is definitely much better and dependable! Then, how does God work in the midst of injustice? First, futility curse for the offender: when you sin to get what you want, you don’t actually get what you want. In Amos, God made sure these offenders would not be able to enjoy the fruits of their crimes. All their luxury will be useless when Israel was defeated, because by then, they would either be killed or exiled. Second, God identifies with the powerless, He takes up their cause. The Bible introduces God as “a father to the fatherless, a defender of widows”. He heals their wounds, He empowers and helps the weak move forward and remain hopeful in spite of social disadvantages. And He even used them as His vessels to make this world a better place. Third, the assurance of final judgement. God promises that He will judge impartially, using the same standard for all people. He will make right what was wrong. . . When we lay down the burden of vengeance, God will pick it up. Human selfishness often shows up in the church in the form of making moral issues out of cultural ones. We think that other people need to be like us in every single idiosyncratic expression of life. But the gospel isn’t about making people like us. It’s about introducing them to Jesus. It’s not about convincing people to worship in a certain style. It’s not about getting people to program their church services in a certain way or fit into a specific mold for ministry.
