Day 687: Public Image Ltd - Metal Box 3x12”. I think this was my first major pandemic purchase. Everything was shut down but I had to keep going into work. I was terrified that any day I might get sick with this new unpredictable thing. It was awful and my brain could not handle it. The way I stayed sane was to buy records. With money still coming in steadily and nothing to do/nowhere to go, I funneled that money into buying records from my want list. This one popped up for sale from @milkcratecafe on discogs. Perfect. I ordered it, asked if I could drive by to pick it up from their takeout window, and got this perfect post punk album with my breakfast that day. Sometimes it helps the anxiety to just listen to the most anxious music as loud as possible. This fit that need perfectly. It sounds incredible across three 45 RPM 12”s. I’m a sucker for a good locked groove. Every good thing anyone has ever said about this album is correct.

I have a thing for some of the 1970’s blaxpoitation movie soundtracks and scores. This is from the 1972 vampire-horror flick, where the score is more funk than daunting classical music. About two-thirds the tracks are instrumentals by Gene Page and the rest are by The 21st Century Ltd and Hues Corporation. The themes are funky and still a bit eerie sometimes. Day 28 of the #mayaswellbespinningrecords Challenge hosted by @urmsonvinylfan “Loser”… In full disclosure, I am a huge Milwaukee Brewer fan, but the 1972 Milwaukee Brewers were not a great baseball team to say the least. In their third season in Milwaukee they managed to scrape their way to a 65-91 record, good for last place in the American League East. The season did actually position the team to draft a future Hall Of Fame player in Robin Yount within 1973’s June Amateur Draft. That move began to change the team’s fortunes later in the decade. That being said, to have this instructional album by my favorite baseball team despite how terrible they were in 1972 was too funny for me to pass up! Do Ya , by The Move , a 45rpm released in 1972 . Jeff Lynne’s song first saw the light of day as the B side of the final Move single , the Roy Wood penned California Man . It was recorded during sessions for the group’s Message From The Country album , a contractual obligation to Harvest Records . Wood , Lynne and Bev Bevan were already morphing into the Electric Light Orchestra , whose debut single , 10538 Overture was also recorded during these sessions . Neither California Man nor Do Ya made the final cut for that last Move album , but on the strength of the former , the single made the UK top ten . In the US , Do Ya proved more popular , resulting in a minor hit , prompting Harvest to reissue the song in the UK . Again it failed to chart . Lynne re-recorded Do Ya , with added strings , and it appeared on the Electric Light Orchestra’s A New World Record album in 1976 . For many , the first version you hear of a song makes it the definitive version , and the ELO rendition will tick that box for many , but The Move’s version , a rawer piece of power pop with a great riff gets my vote . Pool Hall Richard , by The Faces , a 45rpm released in 1973 . This was a non album single , written by Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood , and one of the last of The Faces songs to feature bass player Ronnie Lane . With Stewart already a successful solo artist recording on the Mercury label , and the group signed to Warner Bros , it was hardly an ideal situation for all concerned . Stewart’s commitment to the group waned , and he turned up two weeks late , for rehearsing and recording the final Faces studio album Ooh La La . Lane became frustrated that the group had become merely Stewart’s backing band , and left to form his own group , Slim Chance . He was replaced on bass by Tetsu Yamauchi , who had previously replaced Andy Fraser in Free . The Faces soldiered on for another year , though with Stewart now a superstar , Wood began a dalliance with the Rolling Stones and the group’s inevitable break up occurred in 1975 . Day 678: The Stills-Young Band - Long May You Run LP. Looks like I bought this for $5 in early 2009, though I would’ve sworn I got it before that. I heard the title track from this album on Decade and figured I should probably own the whole thing. It’s fine. None of it really lives up to how great that title track is. Ah well. It’s still good, just not particularly great.
