Released on this day in 1971. “Ram” is the 2nd studio album from Paul in collaboration with Linda McCartney. The album was recorded amid Paul McCartney’s legal action in the U K’s High Court to dissolve the Beatles’ partnership, following their break up the year before. This is the only album credited to the couple. He and Linda recorded it in New York with guitarists David Spinozza and Hugh McCracken, and future Wings drummer Denny Seiwell. Happy 82nd birthday to Taj Mahal, born on this day in 1942. Henry Saint Clair Fredericks is a self taught singer/songwriter and film composer who plays the guitar, piano, banjo, and harmonica, among many other instruments. He often incorporates elements of world music into his works and has done much to reshape the definition and scope of blues music over the course of his almost 50 year career by fusing it with nontraditional forms, including sounds from the Caribbean, Africa, and the South Pacific. When Mahal was eleven his musician father was killed in an accident at his own construction company, crushed by a tractor when it flipped over. Mahal’s mother later remarried. His stepfather owned a guitar which Taj began using at age 13 or 14, receiving his 1st lessons from a new neighbor from North Carolina of his own age who played acoustic blues guitar. His name was Lynwood Perry, the nephew of the famous bluesman Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup. His stage name came to him in dreams about Gandhi, India, and social tolerance. He started using it in 1959 or 1961, around the same time he began college at the University of Massachusetts. Despite having attended a vocational agriculture school, and majoring in animal husbandry and minoring in veterinary science and agronomy, Mahal decided to take the route of music instead of farming. “TajMo” is a joint album from Taj Mahal and Keb’ Mo’ and It was released May 5, 2017. On this day in 1996 Johnny “Guitar” Watson died from from a heart attack, collapsing on stage while on tour in Yokohama, Japan, at the age of 61. John Watson Jr, known professionally as Johnny “Guitar” Watson, was a blues, soul, and funk musician and singer/songwriter. He was a flamboyant showman and electric guitarist in the style of T-Bone Walker. Watson recorded throughout the 1950s and 1960s and with his creative reinvention in the 1970s with funk overtones, he had hits with “Ain’t That a Bitch,” “I Need It” and “Superman Lover.” His successful recording career spanned over 40 years, with his highest chart appearance being the 1977 song “A Real Mother For Ya.” Watson has been recognized as a master of the Fender Stratocaster, and has often been compared to Jimi Hendrix. He allegedly became irritated when asked about this comparison, supposedly stating: “I used to play the guitar standing on my hands. I had a 150ft cord and I could get on top of the auditorium – those things Jimi Hendrix was doing, I started that shit.” Frank Zappa stated that “Watson’s 1956 song ‘Three Hours Past Midnight’ inspired me to become a guitarist.” Steve Miller did a cover of “Gangster of Love” on his 1968 album “Sailor.” Jimmie Vaughan is quoted as saying: “When my brother Stevie and I were growing up in Dallas, we idolized very few guitarists. We were highly selective and highly critical. Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson was at the top of the list, along with Freddie, Albert and B.B. King. He made magic.” Pearl Jam recorded a song entitled “Johnny Guitar,” about Watson, for their 2009 album “Backspacer.” “A Real Mother For Ya,” released in January of 1977. This is a great album, bluesy, funky and smooth. His chops with the talk box on the time “Your Love is My Love,” is top notch. The multi talented Johnny G plays all instruments I. Released in May of 1973. “Yessongs” is the 1st live album from Yes, released as a triple album. After finishing their “Close to the Edge” Tour in April of 1973, the band chose live recordings between February and December 1972 on their tours supporting “Fragile” and Close to the Edge” for the live album release. Three tracks feature original drummer Bill Bruford while the remaining tracks feature his replacement, Alan White. There is an accompanying film that was released after the album was released. The artwork for this album was created by Roger dean, and was the most elaborate of his works at that time. It features images of each band member performing live. Roger Dean described the album as “the most elaborate and complex package” of his career at that time, which consists of 3 albums worth of artwork and an excellent booklet. In June 2013, Roger Dean filed a $50 million lawsuit against James Cameron for copyright and contributory infringement and unjust enrichment, claiming the design of “Pandora,” the fictional setting in Cameron’s film “Avatar,” was based on Dean’s paintings including “Pathways” and used without his permission. Happy 75th birthday to Bill Bruford, born on this day in 1949. William Scott Bruford is best known as the original drummer for Yes, from 68 to 72 and again from 89 to 92. After left Yes, he spent the rest of the 1970s playing in King Crimson, touring with Genesis and UK, and eventually forming his own band “Bruford.” He is now a retired drummer, percussionist, songwriter, producer, and record label owner. In the 1980s, he returned to King Crimson for 3 years, collaborated with many artists. He then played in “Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe,” which eventually led to his 2nd tenure in Yes. He played in King Crimson for his 3rd and final tenure between ‘94 and ‘97. In 2009, he retired from public performance. He released his autobiography, and continues to speak and write about music, and he operates his record labels, Summerfold and Winterfold Records. In 2016 he earned a PhD in Music. In 1990, he was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Yes in 2017. “Yes” is the Band’s self titled debut album, released in July of 1969. My copy has been desecrated by an asshole with a sharpie! After forming in mid ‘68, the band toured extensively across the UK with sets of original material and rearranged covers. They signed a deal in early 1969, and entered the studio in London to record their 1st album. Yes includes covers of “Every Little Thing” from the Beatles and “I See You” from the Byrds. The album got positive reviews but failed to chart. Bill Bruford left the band temporarily pursue an education at college, however the line up returned to its original formation in November of 1968. Banks thought the producer, Paul Clay Banks was inexperienced and unsure as to how Clay became involved to begin with, and viewed Clay unfit for the job. He had only worked on film soundtracks and knew nothing about working with rock bands, which caused the album to lack in quality as a result, with Bruford’s drums sounding “like biscuit tins” and his guitar sounding “clangy.” It’s a good album nonetheless! #billbruford #yes #beyondandbefore

The 11 song record was produced by Lund, and was recorded in his living room in Alberta. The album is dedicated to Lund’s dear friend, the late musician Ian Tyson — who earned the nickname “El Viejo”, spanish for “The Old Man”. He was 88. It features co-writes with screenwriter @briankoppelman (Rounders, Ocean’s 13, Billions) and Corb’s good friend and fellow songwriter @jaidadreyer. . . Released on this day in 1976. “Rising,” (also known as “Rainbow Rising”) is the 2nd studio album from Rainbow. Shown here is my OG release, bought upon release day. Ritchie Blackmore only retained Ronnie James Dio from the previous album‘s line up, and recruited drummer Cozy Powell, bassist Jimmy Bain and keyboard player Tony Carey to fill out the new band. The band was originally billed as “Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow” in the US, but was titled just as “Rainbow” on this release. The 8 min and 26 second track “Stargazer” features the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, and originally had a keyboard intro as heard on the 2011 Deluxe Edition’s “Rough Mix” version. I’ve told this story many times but here I go again,…. I saw Rainbow live at the Miami Jai Alai Fronton on July 15, 1976. Sat front row center. Roy Buchannan was the opening act. My friends and I stayed after the show and waited to meet Richie Blackmore and Dio. We had a short chat and I got their autographs. ⏮📷 Blackmore was an arrogant prick, (he lives up to his reputation.) Released in May of 1970. “In the Wake of Poseidon” is the 2nd studio album from King Crimson. The album is their highest charting in the UK, reaching #4. The cool part of this post is that I actually found this in a very cool Brooklyn record store, within a coffee shop called “For The Record,” on Manhattan Street. I found it on the day of the album’s original release date! Serendipitous!! The album was recorded during a tim when the band was very unstable. Mostly due to the changing lineup. This album is very similar in musical style to their debut album, “In the Court of the Crimson King.“ This album was well received by critics, who who views it as an improvement over the band’s debut. Ian McDonald and Michael Giles left the group after their first American tour in 1970, and at about the same time Greg Lake was approached by Keith Emerson to join what would become Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Robert Fripp took over with the keyboard duties in addition to guitar. With Greg Lake’s position in the band unclear, the then unknown Elton John was booked to sing on the recording sessions for “In the Wake of Poseidon,” but Fripp had 2nd thoughts and cancelled the booking. Greg Lake would decided to leave, but agreed to sing on the album, negotiating to receive King Crimson’s PA equipment as payment. The cover’s artwork is called “The 12 Archetypes” or “The 12 Faces of Humankind.” The color pictures were painted by Tammo De Jongh in 1967. The album was re-released in 2010 with a new stereo mix by the brilliant Steven Wilson and Robert Fripp as part of the 40th Anniversary release. #kingcrimson #inthewakeofposeidon #greglake

The Silence of the Lamb Expanded Motion Picture Soundtrack - Howard Shore (1991). Tonight I’m continuing with the movie soundtrack theme but staying with the run of colour vinyl. From the mind of the composer who gave us the epic Lord of the Rings soundtrack came this tense and evocative soundtrack from one of the great modern thriller/horror movies, The Silence of the Lambs. Howard Shore composed this brilliant work to underscore the unease throughout the film, brilliant stuff. A truly great horror not rooted in the monsters of myth or folklore but the monsters dormant in the human mind. A psychological study of psychopathy masked by brilliance. Scary stuff. Anthony Hopkins’ performance was beautifully balanced by the naive but resolute Agent Starling played perfectly by Jodi Foster, by far the best of the Hannibal Lecter movies. This extraordinary mondo edition on 180g black and yellow swirl with white splatter vinyl was released in 2019. This edition is expanded to include more of the soundtrack from the film. Britney Spears - Britney Her first album that went for a more adult sound and really her first truly really good album. There’s only a couple misses on here for me towards the very end of the album but overall I love it. My favorite tracks are: Let Me Be, I’m a Slave 4 U, What’s It Like To Be Me, and Anticipating.

Released on this day in 1969. “Tommy” is the 4th studio album from the Who. Shown here is a 180gram rerelease gatefold. It was released as a double album, and was mostly composed by Pete Townshend. Pete Townshend came up with the concept of Tommy after being introduced to the work of Meher Baba, and attempted to translate Baba’s teachings into music. The original album has sold over 20 million copies and has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. The Who promoted the album’s release with a lengthy tour, including a live version of Tommy, which lasted throughout 1969 and 1970. Key gigs from the tour included appearances at Woodstock, the 1969 Isle of Wight Festival, the University of Leeds, the Metropolitan Opera House, and the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival. Bruce Cockburn - Live This cd is just brilliant! Bruce is a quiet guitar hero . Years ago I watched a TV show called In Session. The premise was to pair two different types of musicians together and let them jam a bit. This episode was Rik Emmit of Triumph and Mr. Cockburn. Being more of a “rock” guy at the time, I was much more excited to hear what Rik was going to contribute to. Much to my surprise Bruce completely blew me away. I always thought of him as more of a songwriter acoustic musician but was thrilled to see that this 🇨🇦 is a virtuoso on the guitar. Long story short… I sought out more of his music and was directed by my friend Bob to check this album out. The production is perfect on this. His band is super tight and the performance captured just makes you grin. I didn’t even know half these songs but now love them.
