The Family Cat - River Of Diamonds (Dedicated, 1992) I don't need to say that this is another brilliant single from The Family Cat, because the 'brilliant' part is already denoted by the mere mention of the band's name. This 7" came with a sheet of temporary water transfer tattoos. Fun (or not so fun) fact: the sleeve of this single was accidentally printed with the barcode for Spiritualized's 'Medication' 12" (also on Dedicated), resulting in increased sales for Jason Pierce and co, but not so good for the 'Cat.

Post 502: The Family Cat (2016) I am not quite sure who said it – probably my mum, but I suspect she wasn’t the first – that you never really appreciate what you’ve got until it is gone. Like John Peel, Burnden Park, Top Of The Pops, Pacers (fantastically minty green and white striped chewy sweets for those of you not old enough to remember)… some things will forever be lost, shrouded in happy memory tinged with the slight regret that better things did not come in their place. And so it is with The Family Cat, often overlooked, forgotten even, in hazy reminiscences of the good old days of indie of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Despite buying every record in the week of release, I didn’t realise how important their songs would be to me until they stopped releasing them. So, to appease my guilt, refresh your memories or kindle an enthusiasm that will otherwise not realise it is waiting to be kindled, here is a Toppermost Ten for The Family Cat. I posted part one, which came on lime green vinyl, back in December, so here's part two which, rather fittingly, came on gold vinyl in a gold sleeve. Great band who should have been a lot bigger, in my opinion.

The Family Cat - Remember What It Is That You Love (Bad Girl, 1990) Very early single from The Family Cat (possibly their second?) which came as a numbered limited edition 7" (mine being number 0561), although there is also an unnumbered pressing in a red and blue sleeve, as opposed to the red and black one you see here. I think the cover art has a bit of a Keith Haring vibe to it.

The Family Cat - Airplane Gardens (Dedicated, 1993) Getting in nice and early for today's #saturday90svinylrevival with this absolute classic from The Family Cat, which was another staple of Radio 1's Evening. I remember buying this in a shop in Skegness called Herrick Watson and, for a geeky record-buying 14-year-old, it was ridiculously exciting to find such a low-numbered copy of this 7" (number 0045, no less!).

The Family Cat put out so many strong, catchy singles that I can't help wondering what would have happened if they'd stuck around long enough for Britpop to happen, rather than splitting up in 1994, but what a catalogue of work they left behind, eh?
The Family Cat - Jesus Christ (Clawfist, 1991) It's Sunday AND it's very nearly Christmas, so this 7" feels appropriate today. It's a cracking cover of the Big Star song by the ludicrously underrated The Family Cat, a band who had some truly fantastic songs but didn't get the recognition they deserved (the name probably didn't do them any favours, mind).
