The Galapagos Sea Lion is found almost exclusively in the Galapagos Islands and is it’s own species. They have the ability to dive to 600 meters and stay underwater for 10 minutes. The males can get up to 4x larger than females. The dominant males tend to defend a stretch of beach where females haul out rather than a particular harem as with other sea lion species. Their natural predators are orcas and sharks but their main threat is the El Nino effect which devastates the other marine species the sea lions depend on. There is also a threat from domestic dogs which spread disease to the sealion colonies and plastic pollution. Heute ist Endangered Species Day! 🐾🌿 Am dritten Freitag im Mai machen Menschen rund um die Welt auf den Schutz bedrohter und gefährdeter Arten aufmerksam. 🌍 Auch wir starten daher mit einer gefährdeten Art in unser #WildesWochenende. Der Galápagos-Seelöwe 🦭 (Zalophus wollebaeki) ist eine Ohrenrobbe, die auf den abgelegenen Galápagos-Inseln heimisch ist. Norman aus unserem Ehrenamts-Team konnte sie bei seinem Besuch in bester 🧜-Pose ablichten. ☺️ Die Seelöwen sind Menschen gegenüber nicht besonders scheu und man findet sie auch mal schlafend auf einer Parkbank oder Sonnenliege. Doch der Schein trügt, denn auch sie werden auf der Roten Liste der IUCN als stark gefährdet geführt. 😔 Galápagos-Seelöwen gelten als eine der Arten, die empfindlich auf Umweltstörungen reagieren und frühzeitig anzeigen, dass Ökosysteme aus dem Gleichgewicht geraten sind. Der starke Rückgang der Populationen seit den 1980er Jahren könnte daher ein Zeichen für eine Störung der marinen Ökosysteme auf Galápagos sein. Fieldwork dream team 🥹 We are now officially halfway through our field season and marked it with a little photoshoot 🙌 Our work with the sea lions continues, and after finding Wilhelmina today, we can celebrate 100% pup survival from the fall, which is very unusual 🌊🦁 A major part of the work done here focussed on the long term study of individuals. Therefore, we cover the whole island three times everyday checking all tagged individuals, writing them and their behaviour down. We note what they are doing, who they are interacting with and in which way. With this data it’s possible to follow individual sea lions on a daily and yearly scale 🦭 I’m extremely grateful for this experience and for the wonderful team, I have shared it with! @el_caillou @ppibaque . Caamaño 2023 For those who didn’t know, I’m currently in the Galapagos for field work. We are working on the Galapagos sea lions, testing their behaviour and following the pups from this year 🦭🦁 We are a total of 4 people on the island, all partaking in the project. No sé si s'acaben de decidir sobre si prefereixen el medi aquàtic o el terrestre, però els lleons marins són els reis de les platges de l'illa de San Cristóbal. Als vespres, els mascles criden estrepitosament per reunir totes les seves femelles fora de l'aigua i evitar topar amb els taurons, els seus principals depredadors. Hem visitat l'illa en plena època de cria i alletament, que ens ha proporcionat moments molt tendres i alhora còmics. Malgrat que són cuquíssims, és essencial respectar-los i sobretot, no tocar les cries. It's unreal how agile these creatures are as we witnessed a bunch of sea lions playing along side of us, nibbling at our flippers while we were snorkeling. Underneath us, passed a sea turtle and when we returned to land, the others asked if we had seen the shark, which I didn't, and they said that they saw it pass right by us. . . . .
