Sealions 12.8.23 @ 3:35pm Sea lions are pinnipeds characterized by external ear flaps, long foreflippers, the ability to walk on all fours, short and thick hair, and a big chest and belly. Together with the fur seals, they make up the family Otariidae, eared seals. The sea lions have six extant and one extinct species (the Japanese sea lion) in five genera. Their range extends from the subarctic to tropical waters of the global ocean in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, with the notable exception of the northern Atlantic Ocean.[1] They have an average lifespan of 20–30 years. A male California sea lion weighs on average about 300 kg (660 lb) and is about 2.4 m (8 ft) long, while the female sea lion weighs 100 kg (220 lb) and is 1.8 m (6 ft) long. The largest sea lions are Steller's sea lions, which can weigh 1,000 kg (2,200 lb) and grow to a length of 3.0 m (10 ft). Sea lions consume large quantities of food at a time and are known to eat about 5–8% of their body weight (about 6.8–15.9 kg (15–35 lb)) at a single feeding. Sea lions can move around 16 knots (30 km/h; 18 mph) in water and at their fastest they can reach a speed of about 30 knots (56 km/h; 35 mph).[2] Three species, the Australian sea lion, the Galápagos sea lion and the New Zealand sea lion, are listed as endangered. Stella sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus). 알래스카. 최근 신안(6월), 포항(7월), 통영(8월) 앞바다에서 큰바다사자가 나타나 화제다. 1920년대에는 신안 가거도 인근 부속섬에서 120개체 정도가 서식했다고 한다(고경남 신안군 세계유산과장). 큰바다사자는 이름 때문에 바다사자와 혼동할 수 있어 주의해야 한다. 큰바다사자는 큰바다사자 속(Eumetopias)에 속하는 단일종이고, 바다사자 속(Zalophus)에는 3종이 알려져 있다. 한반도에 서식했던 바다사자는 ‘강치(Zalophus japonicus)’라고 부른다. 지금은 멸종했다. 강치(强治)라는 표기는 19세기 기록인 오주연문장전산고(이규경)에서 처음 나타난다. 이전에는 ‘가지(可之)’ 또는 ‘가지어(可支魚, 嘉支魚)’라고 적었는데, 울릉도 방언인 ‘가제’ 및 ‘가재’를 음차한 것으로 알려져 있다. 과거 독도엔 가지가 많아서 가지도라고 불렀다고도 한다. 17세기 기록인 울릉도 사적(장한상)을 보면, 선조들은 이 강치를 물개(해구, 海狗)나 물범(반달, 班獺)과도 구별했음을 알 수 있다. 덧붙여, 조선에서는 강치를 ’가지‘로 표기했으나 중국과 일본에서는 ’해려(海驢, 직역하면 바다나귀)‘로 표기했다. 역사문헌에서 해사(海狮)라는 표기는 아직 보이지 않고, 영어 sea lion을 직역한 바다사자라는 표기를 사용한 것은 최근인 1970년대부터다. Meet Zalophus wollebaeki, the Galapagos Sea Lion! These Lobos Del Mar are in an ENORMOUS colony on San Cristobal Island. As you can see from the third picture they’re even on the benches. This species breeds exclusively in the Galapagos and another island in Ecuador. They were ubiquitous. It was very cool to see all the different age groups from babies still nursing to big burly dominant males. We even got to swim with them off of Isla Lobos. The juveniles are very curious about snorkelers and will pop up in your face! 😂 The sound of Sea Lion barks is the soundtrack for the malecon in San Cristobal.
