Day 1050. 67,835 km. “Debes que visitar Mar del Plata! Es hermosa!” While escaping the Patagonian winds at a gas station along Ruta 3, three truck drivers at a neighboring table (yes, gas stations have cafe seating here) told us we needed to come to “La Feliz” “La Perla del Atlantico” “Mardel” “Biarritz Argentino”. When locals recommend a place, normally, find a way to go. But I was mentally unprepared for Plata Del Mar. If Puerta Madryn felt like the Italian coast near Rome, and if Miramar until Mar del Plata could easily be Bodega Bay, California or Elliston, South Australia, Plata Del Mar feels like...nothing I’ve seen before. So...expansive. Battlefield tanning. Vast. Yes, car clogged. And so young. Eurolatino. Superficially uninhibited. Crammed beach parasols as far as the eye can see. A mass orgy of tanning and mate. Shirtless. Dark muffin tops in primary-color beachwear with tattoos and piercings. I feel too old and deeply introverted to enjoy this; Thanksgiving-Day-volume-Asado-completo before cramming into swim trucks the next day. Ride away! To El Ateneo Grand Splendid bookstore is in Buenos Aires (don’t pass go don’t collect $200). I am, ultimately, not a beach person like this. And I want to feel my version of comfortable again. Meet Zalophus wollebaeki, the Galapagos Sea Lion! These Lobos Del Mar are in an ENORMOUS colony on San Cristobal Island. As you can see from the third picture they’re even on the benches. This species breeds exclusively in the Galapagos and another island in Ecuador. They were ubiquitous. It was very cool to see all the different age groups from babies still nursing to big burly dominant males. We even got to swim with them off of Isla Lobos. The juveniles are very curious about snorkelers and will pop up in your face! 😂 The sound of Sea Lion barks is the soundtrack for the malecon in San Cristobal.
