During mating season (July to December) the males fight for territory and for reproduction. This can be an extreme show of strength and speed. — Females have one pup a year that takes 11 months to be born. The pup lactates from the female every day, after she returns from fishing, for as long as two years, sometimes competing with the previous year new born. Sea lions, do not synchronize their breeding, this results in one of the reasons for the decreasing numbers. — Sea lions feed mainly on small fish, sardines, squid and other mollusks. Data has revealed that they can dive down to 200 meters and hold their breath for more than 20 minutes. — Their natural predators are sharks and orcas, whales very rarely fish sea lions in the Galapagos. The biggest colony of sea lions of the archipelago is in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno and San Cristobal. The Galápagos Islands and Darwin's Theory of Evolution were my favorite subjects in middle school, always dreamed of being able to see those animals in person 😍 The Galapagos Islands are home to some of the highest levels of endemism (species found nowhere else on earth) anywhere on the planet. And we saw so many of them, including the Galapagos tortoise, the marine iguana, the Galapagos sea lions, the Blue-footed boobies, the land yellow iguana, the Galapagos penguins, the Magnificent frigatebird, and so many many marine species (best snorkeling of my life). Galápagos sea lions, compared to California sea lions, have a slightly smaller sagittal crest and a shorter muzzle. Both male and female sea lions have a pointy, whiskered nose and long, narrow muzzle. Young pups are almost dog-like in profile. Another characteristic that defines the sea lion is the pinnae of the external ears, which distinguish them from seals. The foreflippers have a short fur extending from the wrist to the middle of the dorsal fin surface, but other than that, the flippers are covered in black, leathery skin. Curving posteriorly, the first digit of the flipper is the largest, giving it a swept-back look. At the end of each digit is a claw, usually reduced to a vestigial nodule that rarely emerges above the skin. Although clumsy on land, sea lions are agile in water. With their streamlined bodies and flipper-like feet, they easily propel themselves through crashing surf and sharp coastal rocks. They also have the ability to control their flippers independently and thus change directions with ease. — When wet, sea lions are a shade of dark brown, but once dry, their color varies greatly. The females tend to be a lighter shade than the males and the pups a chestnut brown. Pups are born with a longer, brownish-black lanugo that gradually fades to brown within the first five months of life. At this time, they undergo their first molt, resulting in their adult coat. ガラパゴス諸島の取材で一番印象的だったのはガラパゴスアシカです 人が通る道でもお構いなしに、自由にくつろいで過ごす彼ら 時には向こうから、まるで「遊ぼう！」とでも言うように近づいてきてくれることも… いつもアフリカで野生動物を探しまわり、ひっそり隠れながら撮影する身としては、「え？こんな簡単に写真撮らせてくれて良いの?!」と、そのサービス精神に笑ってしまうこともしばしば これはガラパゴスの動物全体に共通して感じたことですが、人への警戒心がとても低いような気がしました セスビュームの赤い絨毯の上で気持ちよさそうにすやすや眠る姿は みんな自由に生きていいんだと、教えてくれているようでした The most impressive thing about the Galapagos Islands was the Galapagos sea lions They spend their time freely and comfortably, without regard to the paths that people walk on Sometimes they would come up to me from the other side as if to say as if to say, "Let's play! This is a common feeling among all the animals in Galapagos, but I felt that their wariness toward people was very low As someone who always searches for wild animals in Africa and takes photos of them while quietly hiding, I was surprised at how easy it was for me to take photos of them. They let me take their pictures so easily? I often laugh at the spirit of service! Magnificent frigatebirds are known as pirates of the sky due to their tendencies to steal food from other seabirds. On my trip, I was able to witness these frigatebirds trying to steal a bite of fish from a much bigger opponent, a Galápagos sea lion. They seemed to be quite unsuccessful, but it was certainly a wondrous and riveting sight. The sky had been heavy with clouds all day, and the waves around Daphne and Pinzón made our group struggle in the water. A day out at sea in Galápagos is as far from a lazy, tropical snorkeling vacation as you can imagine. But not "everybody" was struggling... Did you know that sea lions can swim in an incredible burst speed of up to 25 mph? (That's 40 kph) 🤯 As this playful individual cruised around us, I managed to capture it with some waves crashing on the rocks in the back. These two forces of nature combining into a powerful spectacle before my eyes made me feel so insignificant at first. In the ocean playground, there's a playful creature called the sea lion: 🌊 Water Acrobat: These animals are super good at swimming and diving, showing off flips and spins in the water. 🦁 Mane-Like Fur: Some sea lions have thick fur around their necks that looks like a lion's mane, giving them a cool look. 🐟 Fishy Feast: They love gobbling up fish, squid, and even smaller seals! Their sharp teeth make it easy to catch their slippery prey. 🏖️ Beach Buds: Sea lions hang out on sandy shores or rocky islands, lounging in the sun between swimming sessions. 💕 Social Squad: They're pretty social animals, often chilling in groups called colonies or rookeries. Now, let's talk about the difference between sea lions and seals: 🔍 Spot the Difference: Sea lions have external ear flaps, big front flippers they use for swimming like wings, and can walk on all fours. Seals, on the other hand, don't have ear flaps, have smaller front flippers they can't really use for walking, and move on land by scooting along on their bellies. 🌊 Swimming Style: Sea lions are more agile swimmers, using their powerful front flippers to propel themselves through the water. Seals are a bit clumsier, relying more on their back flippers to steer. A day full of wildlife in the Galapagos! On Day 2, guests started the day by exploring Puerto Egas on Santiago Island, where they saw both land and marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies, and Galapagos sea lions. They then had the opportunity to snorkel from the beach, where they swam among many different species of fish and whitetip reef sharks. “Galápagos sea lions are the most commonly seen marine mammal in Galápagos due to their playfulness and curiosity. While usually seen on beaches or swimming close to shore, they can also be found on benches in the middle of town! However, despite seeming common, they are actually Endangered (last assessed for the IUCN Red List in 2014). The Galápagos sea lion population declined by 60-65% from 1978 to 2001, and since then there has been no evidence of either decline or increase. The reasons for this massive reduction are only partly understood – it is thought that el Nino events effect their prey abundance and subsequently reproduction and survival. This lil’ cutie (Galápagos Sea Lion) scared the crap out of me! 😱 She was up on the deck, laying down when I walked down those stairs to join Kev to look for animals in the water (great snorkeling spot!). Right after I went into the water I went under, when I came up so did she for a breath IN MY EAR- I yelled so loudly!!! I quickly looked under the water and saw her streamlined swimming away from me.
