This morning, while visiting Fernandina Island, we were astonished to witness how the lava reached the sea. Water against fire, cold against heat, lava conquering the ocean, increasing the size of the island... Call it what you want, but we witnessed a geological event that has repeated itself for millions of years on our planet, and today we had the opportunity to observe it up close from our dinghies. “Galapagos Turtle, did you know? Despite their massive size, they can move surprisingly fast, reaching speeds of up to 0.48 kilometers per hour! These gentle giants also have a unique ability to store water in their bodies, allowing them to survive in arid environments for months without drinking. Not only can these giants weigh over 227 kilograms, but they also possess immense strength, capable of lifting objects several times their weight. Additionally, their shells, which are composed of bone and keratin, provide protection from predators and environmental hazards. They can live up to 150 years, witnessing centuries of change in their habitat. Furthermore, they play a crucial role in seed dispersal, helping to regenerate vegetation and sustain the ecosystem for countless other species.” >>> Swipe left to see more >>> #TurtleTales #GalapagosAdventure #TurtleExploration #NaturePhotography #WildlifeWonder #GalapagosIslands #TurtleLove #ExploreNature #TravelPhotography #ConservationEfforts #DiscoverWildlife #TurtleConservation #SantaCruzTurtle #GalapagosWildlife #NatureLovers #TurtleMagic #IslandExploration #AdventureAwaits #CaptureTheMoment #GalapagosConservation #sonya7iii #mylife #mikymike11 #worldtour

The Waved Albatross (Phoebastria irrorata) lays a single egg from April to June without building a nest. The egg is laid on the ground in the dirt, pebbles, and vegetation on the island. Instead, they move the egg within their territory, sometimes up to 165 feet (50 meters), which can result in egg loss. The underlying reasons for this mobile incubation system remain unknown, although theories suggest potential benefits such as avoiding detrimental neighbors or predators, as well as facilitating “temporary adoption” scenarios, wherein another waved albatross may incubate the egg while the biological parent ventures off to forage for food. Both parents share the incubation duties, with periods lasting up to three weeks, while the mate goes out to search for food. This is the longest incubation period among birds. This process is energetically demanding, causing adults to lose significant body weight. If the egg is abandoned, usually due to predation or being wedged on a rock, the developing young in the egg typically dies, even if the parent returns within a small window of around 6 days. This mortality accounts for at least 10 and up to 80 percent of all reproductive failures, with the likelihood of hatching failure increasing the farther the parents move the egg. • • • • #wavedalbatross #albatross #Phoebastriairrorata #galapagosbirds #Galapagos #GalapagosEcuador #galapagosislands #GalapagosWildlife #espanolaisland #birdwatching #birdphotography #birdphotographer #bestbirdshots #birdsofinstagram #kensbigearth #wildlifephotography #wildlifephotographer #yourshotphotographer #nikon #nikonphotography #nikonnofilter #Zcreators #nikoncreators #nikonoutdoors #nikoncommunity @nikonusa

During the non-breeding and chick-rearing months (January through March), the population of the Waved Albatross (Phoebastria irrorata) migrate from the eastern waters off the Galápagos Islands to the coasts between Colombia and Peru. They often congregate in rafts on the sea surface, feeding predominantly on fish, squid, and other invertebrates, with a notable tendency to scavenge near fishing boats. The often feed at night when squid are closer to the surface. Diving is infrequent; instead, they settle on the water’s surface to seize their prey. To take off again, they align themselves with the wind, perform a series of wing flaps, and transitioning into gliding mode. The principal threat to waved albatross are from human activities, primarily associated with fishing. Long-line fishing operations deploy hundreds of miles of baited hooks, inadvertently attracting birds, resulting in fatal entanglement and drowning. While long-lining is prohibited within the Galapagos Marine Reserve (GMR), the birds remain vulnerable beyond its confines. Furthermore, they face risks from marine plastic pollution, alongside environmental hazards such as water contamination, oil slicks, and chemical pollutants. The resurgence of intentional harvesting for both human consumption and feather acquisition has witnessed a notable surge in recent years, further jeopardizing their well-being. • • • • #wavedalbatross #albatross #Phoebastriairrorata #birdsinflight #galapagosbirds #Galapagos #GalapagosEcuador #galapagosislands #GalapagosWildlife #espanolaisland #birdwatching #birdphotography #birdphotographer #bestbirdshots #birdsofinstagram #kensbigearth #wildlifephotography #wildlifephotographer #yourshotphotographer #nikon #nikonphotography #nikonnofilter #Zcreators #nikoncreators #nikonoutdoors #nikoncommunity @nikonusa

I know I’ve already posted some Yellow Warbler pictures, but these might just be the best ones I’ve ever taken in my entire birding career. It was interesting to see its dark orange cap, which isn’t prominent on the subspecies that I normally see in Southern California. It also didn’t mind me getting close to it. Maybe because of the remote location, it isn’t as fearful of people? Observing the flight of the Waved Albatross (Phoebastria irrorata) is truly amazing. With grace and precision, they navigate the skies by harnessing the speed of the wind and by adjusting the angle of their wings. However, their narrow wings pose a distinctive challenge, requiring windy conditions or cliffsides for takeoff and landing. Landing, in particular, proves challenging as their wings struggle to generate enough lift at slow speeds, often leading to awkward tumbles and bounces upon touchdown. • • • • #wavedalbatross #albatross #Phoebastriairrorata #birdsinflight #galapagosbirds #Galapagos #GalapagosEcuador #galapagosislands #GalapagosWildlife #espanolaisland #birdwatching #birdphotography #birdphotographer #bestbirdshots #birdsofinstagram #kensbigearth #wildlifephotography #wildlifephotographer #yourshotphotographer #nikon #nikonphotography #nikonnofilter #Zcreators #nikoncreators #nikonoutdoors #nikoncommunity @nikonusa

During your visit to Fernandina Island, you likely had the fascinating opportunity to observe lava lizards 🦎 in action. These small reptiles are ubiquitous in the Galapagos, and their behavior can be quite intriguing. 🧐 Lava lizards are known for their adaptive foraging strategies, and one particularly interesting behavior is their tendency to feed on insects, including flies, found on the bodies or heads of marine iguanas and sea lions. This opportunistic feeding behavior allows them to capitalize on the abundance of insects attracted to the warm, sunny shores where marine iguanas bask and sea lions haul out. As you watched these agile lizards darting around the rocky terrain, you may have noticed them approaching marine iguanas or sea lions, sometimes even climbing onto their bodies. While this behavior may seem bold, it serves a practical purpose for the lava lizards, providing them with a source of food without the need for active hunting. #GalapagosLavaLizard #LizardLife #IslandReptiles #GalapagosWildlife #LavaLizardLove #EcuadorianLizards #UniqueSpecies #IslandAdventures #ReptileEncounters #NaturePhotography #equinoxtours #lagartija
