A few days ago we caught this Tennessee Warbler that was banded in 2021 in Kalamazoo, MI. It is really mind blowing because the odds of us catching the same migrating bird three years later are so low! This species only migrates through here, and in 11 years of banding about 50,000 birds, our station has NEVER previously recaptured a species that only migrates through. This is probably for a few reasons. Migration is dangerous, and mortality rates of birds during migration are high, esp. for ones migrating for the first time. This particular bird we recaptured was banded on its first fall migration, so it had a high risk of death in that first migration. Yet, it survived the odds and was still alive when we caught it years later. Additionally, it was originally banded almost 100 miles away while undertaking its first fall migration -- the odds of it flying into a relatively small mist-net at the other station and then into our small mist-nets 100 miles away while migrating from Central America, South America, or the Carribean to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan or Canada 3 years later are so low! El Arañero Coronado Chico (Basileuterus culicivorus) es una de las primeras aves que llaman la atención a los que se inician en la observación de aves. Un pajarito chiquito e inquieto, que se mueve continuamente por el estrato medio y bajo de los bosques y selvas. Llama la atención por no ser un ave tan común de los ambientes urbanizados, sino que prefiere las reservas y parques arbolados. Es una de las aves más comunes en la selva litoraleña, que va desde Misiones hasta el noreste de Buenos Aires. Y debe ser de las aves que más me costó fotografiar apenas me iniciaba, pero de la que hoy más fotos tengo. Black-and-white Warblers coming through the station this week! First image is a female (note white cheeks) and other images are males (black cheeks). Though this species breeds throughout the eastern US and Canada, we only get BAWW at our saltmarsh during migration. Their breeding habitat is deciduous forests. Though a member of the wood warblers (Parulidae), BAWW is the only species in its genus due to its unique, nuthatch-like foraging behavior. Their Latin name means "moss-plucker," or at least its supposed to! (Mnion is actually seaweed while Mnium is moss, a bit of a mistranslation there! So technically, this means "seaweed-plucker," which.... it is definitely not, lol.) I know I’ve already posted some Yellow Warbler pictures, but these might just be the best ones I’ve ever taken in my entire birding career. It was interesting to see its dark orange cap, which isn’t prominent on the subspecies that I normally see in Southern California. It also didn’t mind me getting close to it. Maybe because of the remote location, it isn’t as fearful of people? 🐓 The Ovenbirds are back‼️ First I saw one, then I saw two. Smaller than a thrush, more graceful than a sparrow, easily mistaken for one or the other. These unique little gnomes are a delight to find but a doozy to see clearly. They always seem to be moving half their body while the other half is still 😂. Or they’re partly/mostly hidden behind something. I don’t do very well with binoculars.
