During breeding season, the female Nazca booby will often lay two eggs rather than one. This is because Nazca boobies undergo an unusual process called obligate siblicide, where the larger and stronger sibling kills the smaller chick. However, the death of a chick may not be directly caused by its sibling. Often, it will be the result of their failing metabolic system as the smaller chick cannot take sufficient care of itself once the parents leave the nest, whilst the larger one can. Our first day in the Galapagos began with a visit to the highlands of Santa Cruz Island, and what better way to start than with a comforting and delicious lunch. We all arrived exhausted after a long journey that began early in the morning in the city of Quito. After a two-hour flight, we reached Baltra Island, then crossed the Itabaca Channel to reach the mountainous area of the island. And in the end, we made it, exhausted but very happy, and here we are!! Today, we had the incredible opportunity to encounter the Galapagos Marine Iguana 🌊 at Tortuga Bay on Santa Cruz Island. These unique creatures are endemic to the Galapagos Islands and are the only marine iguanas in the world. Their striking black coloration helps them absorb heat after their dives into the cold ocean waters, where they feed on algae. Watching them bask on the rocks and then gracefully dive into the waves was truly a mesmerizing experience, showcasing the extraordinary biodiversity of the Galapagos archipelago. Some photos of my recent excursion assisting @parquenacionalgalapagos on their coral restoration project with the support of @galapagosconservancy There are a couple of coral nurseries here and I've helped a few times cleaning the corals but this time we were measuring then and monitoring their health, looking for algae, mortalities, bleaching and bubbles (like mini blisters forming and noone knows why!). It is not lost on me that 20 year old me would lose her sh*t knowing that now I'm now volunteering with the Galapagos National Park, diving, helping marine life. I bloody love it and am very grateful to have built a life that allows me to do this. I could write about the importance of corals for a while; why they matter, and why we should help. But if you want to know more about the specific project here, you can search "restoring coral reefs Galápagos conservancy" who partner the project and have great information on their website. Here's an excerpt: In the Galápagos Marine Reserve, between 95% and 99% of coral reefs were lost between 1983 and 1985 due to extreme weather conditions caused by El Niño, coral bleaching, and bioerosion due to the high presence of Sea Urchins. Since then, some of the coral reef communities have recovered, but since the habitat conditions that they create are of extreme importance, it is key to know if Galápagos coral reefs can undergo a process of restoration through diverse strategies such as coral farming. Coral farming is a process whereby fragments of corals are collected from local reefs, raised in farms until mature, and then installed at restoration sites.  🫧 🪸 . . . . . . #coral #coralrestoration #coralreef #corals #livingthedream #oceanlove #marinereserve #galapagos #galapagosnationalpark #oceanconservation #oceanoptimism #galapagosconservation #saveourseas #marinelife #marineconservation #coralgardening #coralnursery #corales #coralconservation #restorereefs #savethereef

Galapagos Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus galapagoensis) with prey. The Galapagos species of short-eared owl has darker coloration and is slightly smaller than its mainland cousins. This owl landed right near me with a storm petrel it had captured. The owl proceeded to devour its breakfast behind a rock, then eventually flew off. Capturing storm petrels is a unique hunting strategy, so far only seen on the island of Genovesa. The owls lurk near the opening of the dark tunnels the petrels use for nesting, then catch the petrels as they arrive or depart the tunnel entrance. . #galapgos #ecuador #bird #birdsofinstagram #birding #naturephotography #animals #birdwatching #birds #sonyalpha #sonyimages #addictedto_nature #allmightybirds #amazing_birds #animalelite #shortearedowl #raptorbirds #owlsofinstagram #shortearedowlsofinstagram #elite_raptors #eliteowls #women_wildlife_photography #sonyphotography #GalapagosConservation #natgeowild #natgeoyourshot #nature #nature_brilliance

When you’ve been scuba diving long enough, it’s inevitable that you will have a time where you’ll need to end a dive early. In my case, I had to surface because my ears wouldn’t equalize probably due to all the surge I was experiencing playing with sea lions! Instead of being a salty bitch about it, I decided to seas the day and dance with the waves, move with the sea and make a bunch of friends on the surface! #ScubaDiving #Liveaboard #EatSleepDiveRepeat #OceanAirSaltyHair #GalapagosIslands #DarwinAndWolf #GalapagosConservation #Dolphins #SwimmingWithDolphins #Snorkeling #Wanderlust #underwaterphotography

Exploring Fernandina Island’s sea iguana kingdom on Day 5 was truly profound. Witnessing these incredible creatures struggling for food underscored the delicate balance of nature. Despite preservation efforts, the presence of plastic bottles drifting in the water and on volcanic rocks was disheartening. However, our guide’s dedication to conservation was incredibly inspiring as he diligently collected litter both at sea and on land. Upon our boat arrival, the sustainability practice of using just one bottle for the entire week, refilled with purified water, was initially inconvenient but served as a powerful reminder of the importance of respecting and protecting nature. Each day immersed in the beauty of the Galapagos strengthened our commitment to environmental conservation. 🌊🦎 #GalapagosConservation #ProtectOurPlanet #SustainableLiving #Galapagos #DiscoverTheWorld #AdventureTime #naturelovers_flowers #sambagalapagos

Did you know that Galapagos penguin breeding success is closely linked to environmental conditions? In 1982, a particularly strong El Niño event caused 77% of the population to die of starvation, and the population has been recovering ever since. The current population is estimated to be fewer than 2,000 birds. 🐢 Lonesome George: The Last of His Kind and the rarest creature on earth at the time! Lonesome George was a Pinta Island tortoise and the last known individual of his subspecies. In other words, he was the rarest creature alive! He became a symbol of conservation and the impact of human activity on wildlife. 🌎 Discovered in 1971 on the Galapagos Islands, George lived at the Charles Darwin Research Station on Santa Cruz Island. Despite efforts to find a mate for him, he remained the sole representative of his subspecies until his passing in 2012. 🐢 He was not as lonesome as stated though, as when I saw him in 2011, he actually had not one, but two girlfriends (of a different subspecies). Hoping that he would mate with one of them, their work was fruitless and Lonesome George passed away in 2012 without any tortoise progeny and hence his line of Pinta tortoises ended. As the most rare creature in the world, Lonesome George highlighted the importance of preserving endangered species and their habitats. 🌿💚 #LonesomeGeorge #GalapagosConservation #EndangeredSpecies
