Will to survive . A beach combing Black Bear finds itself surrounded by Coastal Wolves early in the morning. I hiked in at 5am in the dark and waited for first light, as the sun started to light the sky I could make out objects in the distance. It was a few minutes before there was enough light for my camera to capture this image of 3 Wolves surrounding this Black bear with an Eagle as witness. . I thought for sure the Bear was done for. But it stood its ground, clacked its jaws, and the wolves circled it a few times and then left it be and wandered back into the timber after 15 minutes of foraging along the beach. Most certainly the Wolves knew the Bear would not go down without a fight and fear of injury or even death prevented their attack. . What an amazing sight to see, something I’ll never forget. I only wish I had video of this to go with the pictures! . Thank you for all the likes and comments. Last Sunday I felt like I won a lottery! Every photographer has a “bucket list” of things they’d love to capture an image of, and one of mine happened to be a wolf. I absolutely lucked out with not just any wolf; but the very elusive Sea-Wolf of the Pacific Coast. We had been watching the shoreline for a few minutes and were about to leave when out of the corner of my eye I saw some movement and sure enough; not 1 but 2 Sea-Wolves came out from the forest to scour the shoreline for a washed up meal. These were probably the most challenging wildlife images I’ve taken to date. Not only was it raining, but I had to compensate for movement of the wolves and of course there was a little photographer movement as I was free holding my largest zoom lense in a moving boat. Every time a wave lapped at the boat my focus point would move at least 15 feet up or down through the view finder. If you are a photographer you know the term “spray and pray” and there were certainly moments in which this was occurring. A few interesting facts about a Sea-Wolf which makes them unique. They are a subspecies of the mainland grey wolf and are considered endangered. They can swim miles between islands and rocky outcrops with the longest distance recorded being 12 km. The Haida people refer to them as Wasgo. They are said to bring great luck and wealth to anyone fortunate enough to see or hear one. There is a documentary on Netflix (Seawolf) showcasing these beautiful creatures. I’d also like to give special mention and thanks to our guide Brody from Tofino Ocean Adventures who was extremely knowledgeable about the area and shared his love of the Pacific Coast. During our time with Brody we were able to see an abundance of wildlife and also enjoyed a little crabbing and prawning from his boat! 5 Star service! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ More photos to come at a later date! Good morning and Happy Friday The beautiful Coastal Wolf (Sea wolf) This female coastal wolf is a subspecies of the grey wolf and living along the coast of the Pacific Northwest. She, along with all the Sea Wolves are unique due to their aquatic lifestyle. She has a diet which consists of 70% to 90% marine life. More than a quarter of that being salmon. To avoid bacterial infections, known as "salmon poisoning, "... it's been documented that the wolves will focus on eating only the brain of the fish. The rest of the diet consists of barnacles, clams, mussels, and crabs. My heart was pounding with excitement as I peered through the viewfinder, trying to capture the perfect moment. I knew how rare this opportunity was and was determined not to miss it. Spending nearly an hour with the wolf pack, I was completely absorbed in the experience. It wasn’t until later, when I uploaded the photos to my computer, that I noticed one of the wolf pups had heterochromia. Reflecting on these unique moments reminds me of the privilege I have to pursue such thrilling encounters in the field.

I'm so far behind on posting art again! 😑 (Un)fortunately I've had too much on my plate to actually produce much but I did finally get around to producing a piece for Victoria, British Columbia (BC's capital city,) after my brother @kirbenvost sent me a picture of Emerson the seal and I finally got inspired enough to summon some gumption! * ❤️Both versions of this design are available in my #redbubbleshop on swag like t-shirts, stickers, hoodies, postcards and more - click the link on my profile to check them out!❤️ * This piece is called 'Charismatic Victoria' and features Emerson the seal (who keeps being relocated up-island only to return again and flop amongst the many flowers,) Roger the hoary marmot (who hitchhiked down to Victoria from Roger's Pass to the famous Empress Hotel where he has lived ever since,) and the late great Takaya the sea wolf, who was tragically shot by a trophy hunter after he left his lonely home of many years on Discovery Island just off the coast of Victoria to look for a mate. It also features an iconic garry oak and the beautiful camas flowers which have long served as a foodstuff to indigenous nations. * Ever since Takaya's passing his island's environment has suffered, with scavengers no longer able to clean up the smelly carcasses which wash ashore. Wolves play a critical role in carcass removal as their strong jaws allow them to bust through tough pinniped (seal, sea lion) and cetecean (whale, dolphin,) hide which permits access to smaller charismatic scavengers like ravens and bald eagles. Without larger carnivores like sea wolves like Takaya and bears around, these small scavengers cannot access these carcasses so they are left to putrify on the beach, contaminating water and smelling awful! Predators like wolves are absolutely critical to our environment and it is important that they be celebrated instead of demonized.
