Spent two great days with Captain Mike and @oceanicexpeditions whale watching off Moss Landing. Tons of humpbacks and 4 different dolphin species. I have to say to all my photographer friends, Mike works really hard to position the boat to get the sun in the right place relative to where the wildlife decides to present themselves. I really did appreciate that effort and it’s not always easy. Missed the breaching today but I’m really happy with this common dolphin photo. May 8, 2024 Alaska’s Portage Glacier Lake breaking up its wintery glacial ice. Scoping out conditions for my first shot at this season’s kayaking. Really aiming for time on the water w big chunks of ice and calm winds and water. Rainbow Falls trail providing fantastic views up some fun steep terrain. This was a great hike today! In light of the recent pilot whale stranding event in Geographe Bay, Western Australia, we wanted to share information on how we, as a community, can help in these stressful situations. Advice from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation, and Attractions (DBCA) is if you see a cetacean that is stranded or distressed, call the Wildcare Helpline on 08 9474 9055. Do not approach, touch, or move the animal, unless DBCA have provided direction to do so. DBCA ask the public to maintain a safe separation distance from the animals to reduce risk of stress to the animal and of injury to people. DBCA direct their efforts to ensure the best outcome for the animals and the safety of the community. Volunteers can make themselves known to authorities managing the event (DBCA) and follow instructions given by DBCA. To learn more on how best to support DBCA in these events, there may be training opportunities that you can attend, and we’ll endeavour to share details on upcoming training events. With an appetite consuming an estimated 44-66 lbs (20-30 kg) of zooplankton daily, it’s a tough day to be tiny. 🫣 Showcasing its gill rakers, nature’s perfect sieve, designed to “rake” in microscopic meals while allowing water to flow over its gills for oxygen. Mantas are master diners, employing various techniques including surface, chain, piggyback, somersault, and cyclone feeding. The Finespotted Jawfish, (Opistognathus punctatus), is a fish with a long, compressed body, a large bulbous head, and prominent eyes. They are commonly found in shallow reefs, rubble areas, and sandy bottoms at depths of 1 to 20 meters. These carnivorous fish feed on small invertebrates like crustaceans and worms. I only had 15 minutes to capture as much footage possible, the weather wasn’t ideal, and it was my first time landing the drone on a boat. Overall, I’m pretty happy with what I was able to put together. A small bluefish frenzy materialized out of nowhere and before I knew it a pod of dolphins came through ravaging not the baitfish but the bluefish… the frenzy cleared out and dolphins dispersed the scene with spoils of the attack in their jaws. I knew dolphins went after menhaden but I had no idea they would go after such large and aggressive fish. I wish I got footage of the initial ambush but I’m honestly just grateful I brought the drone with me in the first place. Today I finally found a blue lined octopus . This beautiful , placid but highly venomous small octopus has been on my list of sea creatures to find and I was so happy to finally see one today . Is it a mako, thresher, dusky? Yesterday while I was following dolphins, I came across a school of bluefish just feet from the shore. Something suddenly started tearing through it, and at first, I assumed it was one of the dolphins I had been filming. As I watched its behavior more closely, I realized it was something else and thought it might be a thresher shark. It was only when I got a better look at the animal while editing that I learned I had actually documented a sand tiger shark. This species is considered a “High Priority Species of Greatest Conservation Need” in New York due to over-harvesting and low reproductive capacity. Despite its prehistoric, gnarly, and vicious appearance, sand tiger sharks are known to be docile. I’ve been seeing humpbacks on the horizon for the past few months but it wasn’t until yesterday that they moved closer to shore. A few weeks ago menhaden fish made their exodus out of the bays and into the ocean.
