_ New Zealand sea lions are one of four species of pinniped found in New Zealand waters and around our shorelines. Being a native species to New Zealand, New Zealand sea lions have a name in Māori, or in this case multiple names, which causes some confusion. “Pakake” is the most used Māori name for New Zealand sea lions, however they share this name with several species of whale. Alternatively the name “rāpoka” has been used for sea lions, but has a greater association with leopard seals. Lastly, “whakāhao” is also used, yet this name tends to refer to large male sea lions, as opposed to the entire species.
