She's an accomplished Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine and a Botanical Artist who reinvented herself in her late 50s and early 60s. After years of certifications, caring for people, and an unexpected year of caregiving, first nurturing her husband through a medical crisis and then her brother through his cancer journey, she paused and went into self-inquiry to reconsider the next phase of her life. Teri began taking botanical art classes online at the New York Botanical Garden. This scratched a creative itch she'd buried deeply. Uncovering her hidden artist was indescribably rewarding. Her artist statement is artist, gardener, and healer. Living in the Hudson Valley, Teri's beautiful garden is her muse. When I heard @valeriekhoo from @writerscentreau interview Jo Peck about her debut memoir, Suddenly Single at Sixty, I had to get it straight away. As the title suggests, the memoir focuses on the end of Jo’s marriage, and having to adjust to single life at the age of sixty. Jo has a wonderfully engaging writing style that had me turning the pages in record time. Her story is very raw at times and is told with great vulnerability and humour. I’m loving this trend of mature age women telling their stories, and taking centre stage at a time when they have been rendered invisible by mainstream society. Two years ago I put together and published a book of women’s stories called The Rise Anthology. This is a book that I’m immensely proud of because I believe in the power and magic of women’s stories. They are truly life changing for both teller and listener alike. In this case, the writer of the story finds real healing and empowerment in telling their story. Her family immigrated to America from Germany in 1865. Her father was farmer. His farm being located in the Port Hudson area. Wilhelmina married Herman Kormeier. Herman also supported his family by working on a farm. Together they had 8 children. Their names were Eliza, Anna, Henry, Sophie, Louis, John, Emma, and Caroline. Wilhelmina took care of her family and worked as a homemaker. She lost her husband in 1908 In 1932 Wilhelmina suffered an attack of gallstones and could not recover. I often talk about how women's circles give us a safe space to tell our stories. And I think it's really important that we know how powerful our own experience can be when it is shared. Every single circle I have sat in, whether holding space or being held, has shown me that stories are how we grow, they're how we find compassion and humanity, they enrich our world with layers of meaning and understanding, they really are an exchange - an offering from one woman to another, without apology or fear of judgement, simply the gift of sharing your life with others, and allowing the rich tapestry of human experience to weave and knit itself together in a multitude of colours and shapes. Sharing stories has expanded my world, and my understanding of myself, in so many ways. When we listen to the stories of other women, really listen, without needing to reply or offer comment or advice or have an answer, we give that story space to find its way to wherever it needs to be. And it always finds its way. It is so often the stories from the women whose experiences are so different from my own that seem to strike a chord or offer up a question I didn't even know I needed to ask. Stories are how we learn, how we pass down our history, how we share our wisdom and experience, and also our pain and fear and sadness. They are how we celebrate the good things and make space for the hard things. They are how we show our love, they are how we offer a bit of the unique magic of ourselves to the women we sit with. Stories are something no-one can take away from us, they are fluid and beautifully mercurial, they are rooted in our sense of self, and yet also in all our questions and confusion. They change with the telling, but often that is exactly the point. We have to keep telling our stories. We all have a story to tell. Over the last couple of years I have published two books called The Rise Anthology. These are collections of women’s stories. Stories of the challenges they have faced in their own lives, but also recounting how they have overcome these difficulties to rise up. To be able to create a space where a total of 37 women over the two books felt they could be honest, authentic and vulnerable is one of the biggest honours. I know that when women own their stories, they release the shame that was never theirs to carry in the first place. The teller of the story finds healing by sharing what happened. The reader of the story may find a light in the darkness and a sense that they’re not alone. When women share their stories, we all win. Amy Thurman is a former social worker and university educator who dedicated her life to helping others until 2014 when her world came to a screeching halt. After passing out and landing on her face on the hardwood floor, she ended up with a sheared brainstem, a traumatic brain injury, and a broken neck that went undetected for six months. Early in my research for Child of June, I came across this photo. It was dated August 1922 and accompanied by the caption, "Lady Barrister ignored by public prosecutor. The first appearance of a lady barrister in a case at Vienna led to an unpleasant scene, when the public prosecutor left the court, declining to acknowledge Mme Hutterstrasser." I tucked that nugget away, and six months later, it served as inspiration for the Copperdoor Club scene in volume II of CoJ, which introduced Isle to Heinrich.
