#NationalHedgerowWeek coincides with #PlantHealthWeek – how perfect! We all need to do our bit to support hedgerow health, and sometimes that just involves knowing what to look for, and then letting others know! Observatree hosts lots of handy guides and if you do discover any pests and diseases, report them using Forest Research’s Tree Alert. The English oak, the mythological "King of the Forest", supports more life than any other native tree species in the UK. Oaks are hosts to hundreds of insect species which in turn provide food for birds and bats. Squirrels, badgers and deer feed on acorns. The flowers and leaf buds are food for the purple hairstreak butterfly. Unlike beech leaves, oak leaves break down easily, forming a rich leaf mould which supports invertebrates and fungi. A 2019 study found that the English oak is a haven for 2300 species, 326 of which depend exclusively on the oak for survival. The older an oak tree is, the more valuable it becomes for the ecosystem - anything from 400 years upwards is great! Oaks can live for over 1000 years! Like beeches, oaks have fairly shallow roots - they root mainly in the top 30cm of soil. This makes them susceptible to damage from draughts and storms, both of which are predicted to become more common as we face climate breakdown. #EnglishOak #oaktree #ecology #uktrees #ukecology #climatecrisis

In the Whispering Fields In the whispering fields where time stands still, Where hedgerows weave their secrets with the breeze, I find solace in the dappled sunlight spill, And the rustling leaves that dance among the trees. The meadows stretch like a patchwork quilt, Stitched together by the hands of dawn, Where buttercups and clover freely tilt, And the larks compose their melodies at morn. The old stone bridge, its arches weathered and wise, Spans the babbling brook with mossy grace, And dragonflies flit, their wings a cerulean prize, As if painting the air with delicate lace. The scent of wild thyme lingers in the air, And the distant hills wear a misty shroud, While sheep graze lazily, without a care, Their woolly coats blending into the earth’s soft crowd. And when twilight descends, the stars ignite, A celestial tapestry woven above, I stand amidst the quietude of night, Listening to the symphony of crickets and love. For in the whispering fields, I find my rest, Where the seasons change, yet the spirit remains, And the heart knows that here, it is truly blessed, In this timeless haven where beauty forever reigns. Feel free to wander through these verses, and may they transport you to the heart of the countryside!

Did you know we sell potted UK native trees? The best thing about potted trees is that you can plant them any time of the year, which differs to bare root trees. They can be a little bit more expensive but it has better chance of getting established. #uktrees #uktree #uktreeplanting #native #tree #nativetreesuk #nativetree #nativetrees #biodiversity #BiodiversityMatters #BiodiversityLoss

The beech is considered the "Queen of British trees" and those of you who have been on one of our walks through Ackender Woods and have met the "Queen of the Forest" will probably agree that this is a befitting title! Beeches love drier, free-draining soil, which is why beechwood are often associated with chalk bedrock, like we have in Ackender Woods. Their thick foliage creates a shady environment and a thick carpet of fallen leaves and beechmast husks will prevent most woodland plants from growing, but there are some shade-resistant plants which are associated with the beech, including a variety of orchids. Beeches are an important habitat for moths and many butterflies which in turn makes them attractive for bats. Their seeds are eaten by mice, voles, squirrels and deer and as a long-lived tree, old specimen provide habitats for hole-nesting birds and wood-boring insects. Beeches have shallow roots and are susceptible to draughts. More frequent draughts because of the changing climate will likely heavily impact UK beech woods. #ecology #beechtree #uktrees #ukecology #woodlandecology #ukwoodlands

Tree of the week…The Beech!   At Highland heritage Woodworks we mill and dry beech slab for table tops, work benches and some finer carpentry work.. Beech wood takes stain and colour well and its fine grain allows for detailed carving and turned work.   The Common Beech tree, (Fagus sylvatica) Monumental, majestic, home to rare wildlife. Beech is an enchanting species and known as the queen of British trees.   Beech timber is highly prized in various industries due to its physical properties and versatility. Here are ten common use cases for beech timber, along with explanations of why it is considered an excellent material for these applications: 1.         Furniture Making: Beech wood is widely used in the furniture industry due to its strong, hard, and durable nature. 2.         Flooring: hard wearing, it can withstand heavy use and still maintain a good appearance. 3.         Kitchenware: Beech is commonly used to make kitchen utensils partly because it has minimal grain, which reduces the chances of food particles getting trapped. 4.         Toys: It can be finely sanded to a smooth finish, ensuring no splinters. 5.         Tool Handles: It has good shock absorption properties, which are essential for tools that endure a lot of impact. 6.         Veneer Production: It has a fine grain and attractive light colour. 7.         Joinery: Ideal for precision joinery work for joints etc.   Just some of the reasons why beech timber is a popular choice across many industries, balancing durability, workability, and beauty. . . . . #timber #trees #uktrees #woodwork #sawmill #carpetnry #joinery #scottishheritage #furniture #hardwood

A rather sobering thought. While the article goes on to suggest we won't quite know just how well the trees of Europe will adapt, as the title says, there will certainly be a mass die off of many species. It goes on to explain certain species will potentially be able to survive and possibly thrive in specific areas, however the species diversity will be low and therefore will be unable to contribute significantly to local biodiversity. Luckily, the UK has a highly diverse genetic spectrum to work from and, potentially has the adaptability to mitigate the pressures of climate change. Woohoo UK trees. Trees I think that I shall never see A poem lovely as a tree. A tree whose hungry mouth is prest Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast; A tree that looks at God all day, And lifts her leafy arms to pray; A tree that may in Summer wear A nest of robins in her hair; Upon whose bosom snow has lain; Who intimately lives with rain. Poems are made by fools like me, But only God can make a tree. BY JOYCE KILMER
