What a week it has been! 8 days in Barcelona talking to so many amazing people about everything oceans, including The Ocean Hope Project, our book The Ocean and Us, and the importance of gender and all diversity in ocean science. The Ocean Hope Project is our new initiative and my personal pledge to protect the deep-sea, for which I am seeking sponsors / partners / support. I am excited about the new relationships coming out of the UN Ocean Decade Conference (UNOD) and seeing what we can do together for the ocean. Deep gratitude goes to Silvia Donoso, Esther Garces, Elena Torrecilla, Valenti Sallares and the team at Institut de Ciències del Mar - CSIC. Without their invitation to speak at two events, I would not have traveled to Barcelona. The ocean community that many in my network are a part of has one major common denominator: privilege. We are privileged to be working where we do, to be invited to such events, to be asked to speak, often privileged to have the right connections, privileged to have the financial means and time to travel, as well as physical ability, and possessing the right passport. Simply put we are privileged to have access. The format of ocean science and conservation today means that those of us with access to these gatherings are gatekeepers of knowledge, opportunity and funding. For every person who attended UNOD (and this goes for all exclusive ocean events around the world) there are countless more stewards fighting for healthy oceans. We can’t lose sight of those who don’t have access to these events. Mexico is the latest country to support a moratorium on deep-sea mining. That's 24 countries so far saying NO to deep-sea mining either by supporting a moratorium or a ban on this reckless, out of touch, greed driven, speculative industry. Growing resistance, not least from YOU, has helped countries like Mexico think twice about opening up the deep-sea to mining. After all, if allowed to go ahead, Mexico sits on the edge of ground zero of deep-sea mining. In other good news North Volt, a major battery developer, joins industry leaders in supporting a moratorium on deep-sea mining. 20 years of campaigning and 5 years of formal negotiations, we have reached an historic moment! The new High Seas Treaty aimed at protecting life in international waters is finally open for signatures by nation states! 66 nations have already signed since the opening yesterday 🎉 Given everything going on in the world and with the triple crisis of the climate emergency, biodiversity loss and global pollution, this new treaty is an opportunity for governments to pull together and protect our common heritage for the sake of all our futures, human and all others. Yasmin & Bindi defend the deep-sea. The deep ocean makes up most of our ocean planet. The deep ocean is home to countless animals, many of which are unknown to us. Along parts of the deep-sea bed are coal-sized nodules rich in metals. These nodules take millions of years to form and provide essential habitat to deep-sea animals including Casper the ghost octopus. A healthy deep-sea is important to all life including whales and fish through out the ocean. Yasmin & Bindi are advocates of a healthy ocean. Without a healthy ocean humanity will not survive. The deep sea absorbs much of the planet’s CO2 and keeps our planet cool. Only a handful of people will profit from this highly destructive industry. Ocean power house, Ambassador Gina Guillén-Grillo of Costa Rica and Director of Foreign Policy, delivers powerful statements at the International Seabed Authority meeting in Jamaica. Ms Guillén-Grillo is advocating on behalf of Costa Rica for a precautionary pause on deep-sea mining. Ms Guillén-Grillo recognizes the importance of the deep-sea to all of humanity, that the impacts of deep-sea mining will be irreversible and risks disturbing locked away carbon. The current land-based supplies of metals indicate that we don’t need to mine the deep-sea for the next few decades. Moreover battery technology is changing quickly and this could mean we may never need the metals found in the deep-sea. With the climate crises deepening & two thirds of global wildlife gone, we really can’t afford a new destructive extractive industry. The good news we don’t need to! Many have the foresight to know this. Go Sweden! 💙🌊🇸🇪 Oh and note to the Dutch government: allowing deep-sea mining to go ahead in international waters will not make us independent from China. In fact it may make us more dependent since as a nation we will not be mining the deep-sea and will not be able to regulate activities in such a vast area where no one country will be held accountable. We see it with other industries. The High Seas are almost impossible to regulate, never mind auditing activities some 4-6 km deep. Think about it. We can help stop this race to the bottom of the ocean (our last wilderness), and ensure our raw materials demands are met on land where we have oversight, can increase production by being more efficient, can improve current practices, can recover metals from waste streams AND can regenerate areas. Good news alert! Switzerland has announced that they support a moratorium on deep-sea mining! They join the growing chorus of countries that say no to this reckless emerging industry. Switzerland's position sends a strong signal to the International Seabed Authority and any countries still on the fence about deep-sea mining. The Netherlands must take note. We are a service oriented country and our marine engineering capabilities make it very tempting to support mining in the ocean, but the reality is that we cannot afford to trash ancient ecosystems and disturb locked-away carbon for the sake of profits that benefit only a few. Last month I had the honour of sharing my knowledge about deep-sea mining with the European Court of Auditors. Find out why deep-sea mining is a regulatory nightmare. 'If we allow deep-sea mining in international waters to go ahead, it will take place in an area that is outside the jurisdiction of any one nation (the High Seas). Deep-sea mining will be extremely difficult to regulate. Even if regulations are put in place how will operations in the deep-sea be audited? Deep-sea mining will happen at depths of up to 4-6 km. How will we enforce any regulations at such depths and what does accountability look like in practice in an area that isn't governed by any one country?' . . ‘As someone who has been studying environmental systems for decades now, I firmly believe that we should not embark on a new form of ecocide. It has been a wild week at the UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon. Specifically on deep-sea mining. Pacific Island Nations such as Palau, Fiji and Samoa have all come out in support of stopping deep-sea mining. Chile too, has called for a 15 year moratorium. Even President Macron of France joins the growing chorus rejecting deep-sea mining! Our campaign efforts seem to be coming to fruition. It’s International Women’s Day today. This picture was taken many many moons ago (2005) and appeared on my feed as a memory. The fight to protect our planet continues. Human dignity, well-being, peace, justice and equality are all linked to a healthy planet. The ocean makes up most of our planet (over 70%), so protecting the planet that sustains us means protecting the ocean. If you’re feeling powerless today because of everything happening around the world: war, ongoing pandemic, climate crisis, humanitarian crises (in so many places), non-human suffering, and so on, you’re not alone. But there is always something you can do. Support an organization whose mission you support (whether on helping victims of war or safeguarding nature and the ocean), organize in your community (collect clothes, food, money, signatures for a cause you believe in), talk to people, your friends, family and strangers. Feel connected to people around you. Spend time in nature, actively keep your community clean by picking up trash, find ways to reduce your consumption that make you feel good, listen to people. By just listening, you are supporting someone. Limit your daily news intake and screen time. Spend that extra time doing any of the above. Today, and every day, whoever you are, embrace your femininity (we all have a feminine side). Strength, resilience, compassion, nurturance and collectivism are all hallmarks of the feminine. Great to be invited by Ocean Rebellion today to watch them perform in Rotterdam harbour. Their mission is to raise awareness of the threat of deep-sea mining. The crew sang sea shanties about how deep-sea mining will destroy the ocean and projected messages on the ship the Hidden Gem. This ship is being refitted to mine to the deep ocean. The ship is awesome! An epic feet of engineering. It’s just baffling to think that this ship and all the money going into it, will be deployed to destroy the deep-sea, not protect it. Given everything we know about the biodiversity crisis and climate crisis we simply can’t afford to go down this path of destruction. The good news is, we can stop this!!!
