🐢🐤 The Sargasso Sea is home to many endemic species, including the critically endangered green, hawksbill, loggerhead and Kemp’s ridley turtles and the Bermuda petrel, known as the cahow, which was believed extinct until the 1950s. There are many remarkable things about the Sargasso Sea, not least of which is that it’s the only sea in the world that has no land borders. However, the threats of the fishing industry and pollution put this biodiversity-rich area at risk. On #EndangeredSpeciesDay, we call for protection for the Sargasso Sea to be designated as one of the first #HighSeas #MPAs under the #HighSeasTreaty. 📷 Shane Gross/Greenpeace

I support the High Seas Treaty! @highseasalliance officially known as the BBNJ (Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction) Treaty! This agreement is structured around four key pillars: marine genetic resources (MGRs), including questions on the sharing of benefits; area-based management tools (ABMTs), including marine protected areas; environmental impact assessments (EIAs); and capacity building and the transfer of marine technology. This treaty is particularly beneficial for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) as it addresses several of their unique challenges. The MGRs pillar ensures equitable access to and sharing of benefits from marine genetic resources, providing SIDS with opportunities for innovation and economic development (creation and advancement of the biotech industry). ABMTs, including marine protected areas, help conserve critical marine ecosystems that SIDS rely on for food security, tourism, and coastal protection. EIAs ensure that the environmental impacts of activities in ABNJ are assessed, preventing activities that could harm marine environments vital to SIDS livelihoods and culture. One key benefit for SIDS is capacity building and technology transfer which will enable SIDS to participate effectively in marine conservation and sustainable use, thereby enhancing their resilience and sustainable development. It is time to RATIFY the BBNJ as it supports the sustainable development of SIDS; promoting environmental health, economic opportunities, and global cooperation. #BBNJ #HighSeasTreaty #HighSeas #RaceForRatification

🌊 Big News in Ocean Conservation! 🌍 On April 24, 2024, the European Parliament voted for the EU to ratify the High Seas Treaty, marking a crucial milestone in the #RaceForRatification. This sends an important message to the rest of the world that the EU is serious about its role as a leader in ocean protection. 🔍 What This Means: The vote in the European Parliament is an important part of a global effort to secure at least 60 ratifications needed for the treaty's entry into force. With the EU's backing, the focus now shifts to individual EU member states to expedite their national ratification processes. 🤝 EU's Leadership Role: The EU has played a pivotal role in the negotiations of the High Seas Treaty. This most recent vote in favour of the Treaty highlights their continued leadership in global ocean governance. 🌐 Looking Forward: The goal is to reach the necessary ratifications by the 3rd UN Ocean Conference in June 2025 in Nice, France. This is a critical step towards protecting our ocean for future generations. 👏 Support Needed: Now, more than ever, EU member states need to act swiftly. The EU’s concerted effort can help avoid a #MarathonForRatification and ensure timely protection of the ocean. ©Artificier Cascadia/Getty Images @highseasalliance #highseas #HighSeasTreaty #eu #goodnews #ocean #protection #conservation

Hopelijk volgen snel andere landen. 🌎 Bronnen: Europees Parlement, WWF, High Seas Alliance, National Ocean Service #UnitedNations  #VerenigdeNaties  #VolleZee  #HighSeas  #Zeebodem  #Seabed  #EuropeseUnie  #EuropeesParlement  #Biodiversiteit  #Oceanenverdrag  #HighSeasTreaty  #Exploitatie  #Exploitation  #BeschermdNatuurgebied  #Protectedarea  #Ocean  #oceans

🚨HIGH SEAS TREATY UPDATE🚨 The EU @europeanparliament has voted in favour of ratifying the #HighSeasTreaty. 🇪🇺 With two-thirds of the world's oceans considered High Seas (including the Central Arctic Ocean) the Treaty is a landmark, legally binding contract to protect the biodiversity in these vulnerable oceans outside of countries’ maritime borders, including the seabed. Whilst the EU itself does not count as a signatory party, its ratification along with those of its 27 member states will greatly influence the advancement towards the treaty's implementation. For the Treaty to come into force, 60 countries must sign AND ratify it. So far the Treaty has been signed by 89 countries, and 4 have formally ratified: Palau🇵🇼, Chile🇨🇱, Belize 🇧🇿 and Seychelles 🇸🇨. 👏 Congratulations to the EU🇪🇺 @europeanparliament for voting in favour of the #HighSeasTreaty ratification. Leadership by the EU member states is now critical to ensure that the High Seas Treaty secures the 60 ratifications required for entry into force by the UN Ocean Conference in Nice #UNOC25 as a key milestone for ocean action. 🗨️ "This progress provides a big boost to EU countries to accelerate the ratification of this important Treaty at a member state level, and sends an important signal to the rest of the world that the EU is serious about prioritising greater ocean protection with international law as a matter of urgency,” - Rebecca Hubbard, Director of the High Seas Alliance. ℹ️ Under EU law, the #HighSeasTreaty requires ratification at both the EU and EU member state level. When the EU and its 27 member states deposit their instruments of ratification at the UN, it will have a significant impact on the progress of the #RaceForRatification. Is youth ocean leadership radical? @dr.sylviaearle says we’re simply ahead of our time. What’s the alternative? Sit around and do nothing when your house is on fire? The message is clear. At no other point in human history do we know as much as we do now. Science tells us that the habitability of our blue planet is at risk. This Earth day, consider advocating for #ourocean: 🌊 Ratify the #BBNJ treaty. We need to protect the biodiversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ) for critical progress towards protecting 30% of the global ocean by 2030 (30x30). ⛔️ Stop deep sea mining. Our ocean cannot recover from an industry that drives mass exploitation of our planet’s greatest carbon sink. 🌏 Raise your voice. World leaders are gathering in Ottawa, Canada for the fourth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-4) to develop a legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment. 🪸 Spread the word. @noaa recently announced the world’s fourth mass coral reef bleaching event triggered by extraordinary ocean temperatures. #OurOcean2024 #OurOceanYLS #HighSeasTreaty #OurOceanConference #JointheAlliance

👏 We applaud Belize🇧🇿 for being the first Caribbean country to officially ratify the historic #HighSeasTreaty. 57 more countries must ratify for the Treaty to enter into force. Belize joins Palau and Chile in the #RaceForRatification. 🗨️ "Its efforts to safeguard marine life in its national waters have earned Belize a reputation as a world leader in ocean conservation. By committing to protect biodiversity beyond its national jurisdiction today, the nation clearly recognizes how urgently we need to shore up our global ocean’s health to fight the climate and biodiversity crises. We hope other countries in the region and around the world will be inspired by Belize’s leadership and redouble their efforts in the Race for Ratification of the High Seas Treaty." Areas of the seas beyond national jurisdiction comprise the high seas, and are facing a degradation of ecosystems due to climate change and increasing human activities, such as shipping, overfishing, pollution, and deep-sea mining. The recently negotiated High Seas Treaty, also known as the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction Treaty, will attempt to address these issues. How difficult will it be to convince nations to participate? What if all nations agreed to end lawlessness in the ocean? What if businesses and governments were held accountable for their activity? And fragile areas were provided with protected status? ✅ The #HighSeasTreaty, the first of its kind, would: 🌊 Set to govern the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ), 🐟 and protect marine species and the communities whose livelihoods and economies rely on the #HighSeas. We encourage more countries to join the #RaceForRatification so the Treaty can come into force by UNOC 2025. 📷 OceanImageBank/Jayne Jenkins

Today, we’re celebrating World Aquatic Animal Day! Aquatic animals can be classified into two categories: invertebrates and vertebrates. Invertebrates represent the vast majority of marine biodiversity and include, for example starfish, sponges, corals, shells, sea urchins, crustaceans and nudibranchs. The group of vertebrates includes fish, amphibians, reptiles, mammals and birds. Their home, the ecosystems of the ocean, is facing human threats as habitat destruction, overfishing, and pollution. With the urgent implementation of legal regulations under the #HighSeasTreaty, #UNPlasticsTreaty and the global #30x30 agreement, we are hopeful and urge decision-makers to stand up for the ocean - the source of all life. Our pledge: leave no aquatic creature behind. 🦑🦐🦞🦀🐙🐡🐠🐟🐬🐳🐋🦈🦭🐧 *** 📖 DCCEEW.gov.au 📸 Amy Humphries via Unsplash

#DYK: Nearly half of migratory species are in decline, including over one in five threatened with extinction, according to a recent @cms.migratory.species report.   The report found that habitat loss due to human activity, overexploitation, and climate change are among the biggest threats to migratory species.   The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals defines migratory species—like the southern royal albatrosses pictured above—as “a significant proportion of whose members cyclically and predictably cross one or more national jurisdictional boundaries.”   The report also found that just over half of important sites for migratory species are not protected. One way to change that: A new High Seas Treaty.   Almost 88 countries have already signed on in support of the agreement. Once 60 countries ratify and the treaty enters into force, it will enable the creation and management of a network of marine protected areas on the high seas, safeguarding biodiversity and paving the way for a healthier ocean. This new international agreement is a critical step toward the goal of protecting 30% of our global ocean by 2030. 📸 Andrew Peacock/Getty Images   #HighSeas #BBNJ #30by30 #30x30 #HighSeasTreaty #Albatross #MarineConservation #pewtrusts

Our oceans are resilient, but time is running out. These fragile ecosystems are being depleted at an unimaginable rate, endangering millions of animals and destroying the natural benefits our oceans provide. It’s been one year since the High Seas Treaty was adopted and yet our oceans remain unprotected. If 60 countries do not ratify the treaty our oceans will continue to be a lawless expanse riddled with environmental exploitation and degradation. Don’t let another broken promise be the reason we lose the invaluable biodiversity of our oceans. Join the #RaceForRatification and tell your government to take action at the link below. Marine life is depending on you. Photo: Paolo Torchio / © IFAW, © Nick Hawkins

#Repost 📷 by @oceanliteracy_unescoioc 🌊🌍 One ago, the historic #HighSeasTreaty was being signed at the @unitednations. Ever since, two countries – Palau 🇵🇼 and Chile 🇨🇱 – have ratified the treaty! We hope many more countries will step up and ratify the agreement so that it can enter into force by the 2025 UN Ocean Conference in Nice, France, supporting the protection of our shared ocean. Once 60 countries ratify the Treaty, it will enter into force and become the first international law to mandate biodiversity conservation beyond national jurisdictions, this could enable the: 🦭Establishment of High Seas #MarineProtectedAreas 📎 Regulation of potentially harmful activities Despite its vastness, the ocean is vulnerable to overexploitation and is the least protected area of our planet; with only 1.5% is fully protected. Do you know where the name of "The Thermal Dome" comes from? On #WorldWaterDay, we celebrate a unique ocean spot that we think should be protected under the #HighSeasTreaty. 🌿 When strong winds blow warm waters out from the coast into the high seas, the collision causes a unique dome-shaped upwelling system and the ideal conditions for the growth of microscopic blue green algae contained in the highest concentration in the Thermal Dome. Everyone accepts the financial model to mine the seafloor even though costs have likely gone up dramatically. Drill ship day rates are twice what they were three years ago and interest rates to finance the massive capex have doubled. In addition, battery tech is moving decisively away from needing cobalt and nickel. So, where is the math for extraction??? Simply put, it doesn’t exist. Bottom line: deep-sea mining is both economically & environmentally unviable and unnecessary. And the science is clear: there is currently no way to avoid environmental harm if deep-sea mining were to go ahead. 📍The Council meeting of the International Seabed Authority kicked off in Jamaica Monday. 🙌 GOOD NEWS - The Kingdom of Denmark announced their support for a moratorium on deep-sea mining. 25 countries now publicly state that they want to see a moratorium or ban on the speculative industry of deep-sea mining. 👊 We call on States at the #ISA29 to call for a moratorium on #DeepSeaMining. 👉 Read more about about why deep sea mining is not profitable: https://planet-tracker.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/How-to-Lose-Half-a-Trillion.pdf 👉 Join the call for Deep Sea Mining Moratorium: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeadiQsTNVw3U88Xi2co5hVeWzOO-MGs_6kUPFLRC2rp0DPWQ/viewform #Deepseamining #DeepSeaBedMining #StopDeepSeaMining #IAS29 #DefendtheDeep #ProtectOurOcean #SaveOurOcean #HighSeasTreaty #ocean #DeepSea #Cobalt #Nickel #Minerals #Battery #BatteryTechnology #Mining

Daily News: Coral Reefs Under Threat by Glyphosate, Toxic Pesticides Pesticides harm beings and ecosystems, including coral reefs. 🪸 Large benthic foraminifera (LBF)—single-celled organisms found on coral reefs—face adverse metabolic impacts after exposure to the weed killer glyphosate and insecticide imidacloprid, as a research team from the Polish Academy Of Sciences and the University of Vienna finds that “even the lowest doses of the fungicide and herbicide caused irreparable damage to the foraminifera and their symbionts.” [LBFs are typically bioindicators for coral health because they are found in substantial quantities, and gathering data is not intrusive or damaging to reef health.] This study differs from existing literature in how the researchers quantified the impact based on the amount of pesticide products rather than solely on the individual pesticides that comprise the targeted products' main ingredient. Beyond Pesticides acknowledges the intersectional nature of the climate crisis and that pesticide drift and exposure (including glyphosate and imidacloprid) is a problem that applies to terrestrial and marine environments. *** To avoid introducing toxics into ecosystems at the place of origin, advocates call for strengthening organic standards, plus providing new incentives to expand the domestic production and consumption of organic foods and products. >> For more information, please click or tap on the Daily News archive linked on our profile page! #coral #reefs #coralreefs #ecosystems #biodiversity #glyphosate #herbicides #insecticides #imidacloprid #seas #oceans #highseastreaty #pesticides #pesticidedrift #un #unitednations #dailynews @univienna Daily News Blog Post: https://beyondpesticides.org/dailynewsblog/2024/03/coral-reefs-under-threat-by-glyphosate-toxic-pesticides/

Hello (L&G) this week new books on #sanctions #diaspora #immigration #justice #oceangovernance 1. THE POSEIDON PROJECT: This book traces the history of ocean governance through the ages and asks 👉 Who controls the oceans and how it should be used. Central Contention: Relevance of 'FREEDOM OF THE SEAS' Doctrine today and the need to identify newer forms of governance in lieu of contemporary #maritimedisputes #maritimelaw #maritimesecurity #unclos #internationalseabedauthority #senkaku #arcticshipping #highseastreaty 2. JUSTICE ACROSS BOUNDARIES: The AUTHOR brings out a series of 'Papers' concerning the wider conception of #globaljustice 👉 how can the role of 'borders' be recognised and can they meet the required standards of justice.. As the old age saying goes "Good fences make Good Neighbors" so to the author says that we need to show 'who ought to do what for whom' and the duty of the state is to act as second order enablers for the actual agents and agencies of justice to carry out their duties. Some pertinent q's: a. Can a just state invade another state to replace it with a just government? b. The impact of one's #immigrationpolicy and #economicpolicy on other countries. 3. HOW SANCTIONS WORK: Central contention: To reveal the truth about buzzword 'Sanctions' Some Q's: a. Do prolonged comprehensive sanctions affect a targeted country's society, polity and economy? b. Is it a costless tool for the imposing countries with no impact on their own? c. In the context of #IRAN 👉 impact of 4 decades of #economicsanctions d. The 'richochet' effect of sanctions in international politics? To be fair sanctions have brought untold 'suffering' for the common populace and in the meanwhile has strengthened the ruling regime 👉 unparalleled power. 4. THE TIES THAT BIND: This book brings to light: a. The concept of #migration b. Major Impact of 'Political' factor on migration c. Impact of #remittances on countries and overall on Global #EconomicExchange In short the role of #diaspora in today's world [Week 63] #nargesbajoghli #alivaez #onoraoneill Masters thanks for your genuine Support.. It means a lot to me😊 Grace and Peace.. Namaste👏

Great news! Canada has signed the High Seas Treaty, which brings the number up to 88 countries in Total. Signing does not bind the governments to the treaty, but it shows their willingness to proceed to ratification. Only two countries that have signed the High Seas Treaty have completed ratification. As soon as the 60th country ratifies, it will trigger a 120 countdown, after which the High Seas Treaty will enter into force.
