We are happy to share that earlier this month the Maldives became the 5th nation to ratify the UN High Seas Treaty! Joining the other nations of Chile, Palau, Belize and Seychelles, the Maldives has shown its commitment to protecting the health and wealth of our ocean. We hope this encourages the other 84 nations that have already signed it to ratify this treaty to allow it to come into force as soon as possible! This is a big step for ocean conservation, since the high seas is currently unregulated and unmanageable. A photo taken in 1884 of the sailing barque Cviet (1870) aground on Porthleven beach, battered by waves. The Cviet was bound from St. Domingo to Falmouth for orders with a cargo of about 600 tons of logwood. On 26 January 1884 the ship was caught in hurricane force winds that blew most of her sails. Cviet was driven ashore on Porthleven beach broadside to the waves. Rocket lines were fired to reach the crew, but eventually a fisherman swam through the surf and threw a line. The captain and one of the crew were washed overboard and drowned. The rest of the crew were saved. The rigging was taken down on 27 January at low water and the salvage operations continued under the direction of the Receiver of Wreck. HMS London, Zanzibar. A port broadside view of the ‘London’, moored off the coast of Zanzibar. Four British yachts feature in the foreground and near bow. A small steamer can also be seen on the right. A vague landmass lies in the background. Coloured lithograph published by H.M. Currie & Son. HMS London was a two decker 90-gun second-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, launched on 28 September 1840 at Chatham Dockyard. In 1854 she took part in the bombardment of the Konstantin Battery at Sevastopol during the Crimean War, where she sustained damage. 🏝️ Our team is at the 4th International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to work with partners and governments to present the #HighSeasTreaty as an opportunity to achieve sustainable blue economic development, improve the protection of ocean life, contribute to climate action and improve ocean justice and equity. SIDS are key in championing the need for an ambitious Agreement. Now the #RaceForRatification is underway, they continue to lead efforts too: three of the five countries that have ratified the new High Seas Treaty are SIDS: Palau🇵🇼, Belize🇧🇿, and Seychelles🇸🇨, with the Maldives🇲🇻 ratification pending formalization at the United Nations. After kicking off with a session alongside #CARICOM civil society organizations to dive into the vital role they can play in the ratification and implementation of the #HighSeasTreaty, Octavia's 8m-high tentacle made an appearance at #SIDS4 to raise awareness on the importance of a swift ratification and implementation of the #HighSeasTreaty. Nelson Wounded at Tenerife, 24 July 1797. Painted by Richard Westall (1765–1836). After the Battle of Cape St Vincent, 14 February 1797, Nelson was stationed off Cadiz and was ordered to take possession of the town and harbour of Santa Cruz in Tenerife, where Spanish treasure ships were reported to be lying. He immediately set sail with three ships of the line, three frigates, and a cutter and was joined by a fourth frigate and a bomb vessel en route. After several failed attempts Nelson decided upon a direct assault on Santa Cruz by night, aiming for the central castle of San Cristobal where the Spanish general staff were based. During his attempt to land Nelson was about to disembark when he was hit just above the right elbow by a musket or similar ball fired as grapeshot, which shattered the bone and joint. The arm was amputated aboard the 'Theseus' that night. The attack ground to a halt, the British force landed at the harbour negotiating a truce with the Spanish Governor under which they returned to their ships.
