I think of them as mountains-in-miniature, an essential Northeast, a tiny, potted wilderness 🌱 Foamflower (Tiarella cordifolia), Christmas fern (Polistychum acrostichoides), and ramps (Allium vineale). As they are in the woods, they are here. . . . The foamflower spreads quickly, so is either a boon or a challenge for a container gardener. Lablab beans. Flowers and pods, on #thewindsorterrace 💜 It is native to subtropical Africa and eaten with appreciation in South Asia, where it traveled, eons ago. Stateside, even well known seed companies still describe hyacinth beans as toxic, despite my direct attempts at educating 🤓 Yes, like any legume, there are toxicity issues, solved by cooking, or soaking. My sliced pods were cooked for 5 minutes in boiling water and then simmered in a coconut gravy seasoned with ginger, soy sauce and gochujang. The beans have a meaty texture and I really like them. I'll add a link to last season's lablab how-to-grow and (different) recipes in my bio 👆🏽. It's beautiful! It's easy to grow (loves heat and lots of water)! Feeds hummingbirds, and humans! . . . Terrace tidbits: 1 - The yuzu is hanging in there after a too-dry spell while we were away. The fragrant citrus is holding onto some flowers, most leaves, and green fruit, and maybe...everything will be OK. If I'm super-super nice?? 🍈 2 - I let the bay tree out onto the terrace for some fresh air early this spring. An indoor scale attack prompted the move. (The bay is usually a fulltime houseplant 🪴) The scale seems gone, and there are lots of new leaves. Soon, it will move in again, out of the hot summer sun ☀️ 4 - Julia Child, a very tough (and very thorny!) rose. Didn't blink at the lack of water, while Graham Thomas, two pots away, suffered badly. This catalpa explosion is an oustanding welcome, seen from #thewindsorterrace - parched, but surprisingly resilient: un(hand)watered for 13 days 😬 (There is one inch of rain in the gauge and that's not nothing 🙏🏽) I love this huge, well cared-for tree. It houses raccoons on raucous summer nights, feeds drumming woodpeckers, and offers this spectacular flowerburst every early summer. He's becoming bolder and is, like most cats, a natural-born killer - so he wants birds 🐦 As birders, we can't let that happen (we have nuthatches, titmice, downy and red-bellied woodpeckers, a pair of mockingbirds, mossies and countless doves visiting the terrace - although...starlings...I wouldn't mind if he just ate the damn starlings). Recently on #thewindsorterrace I divided my myoga ginger - again - and re-planted the divisions in two pots. I thought the edible buds that form in fall had come to an end, but there were some pale surprises for me, well below soil level! 🩶 These naturally blanched buds have none of the pink that makes them so pretty, usually, but they were immensely fat and juicy (and in need of more careful cleaning than usual). They will be part of tonight's dinner - in a slow sauce with magnolia vinegar, shoyu, and coconut milk, for two pan-seared duck breasts. Alongside the Frenchman's new favorite salad. Big, crisp lettuce leaves 🥬 and crushed cucumber 🥒 dressed with microplaned ginger, lime juice, salt and sugar, and @momofukugoods Chili Crunch 🌶 Maybe I'll save a bud to sliver across the top... . . . Plants are my favorite people. (It's not easy, being green 🐸.) The eastern and greenest, tropical side of #thewindsorterrace on a thundering morning ⛈️ . . I say tropical because the galangal is tall and lush, now, and so is the myoga ginger. Sand ginger, Vietnamese coriander, Thai basil and pepper elder. Plus, the Thai limes... But there are also two super cold-hardy North American Labrador tea shrubs and the big rhodoendron that anchors the space. And native jewelweed for the passing hummingbirds. . . Despite the green and the thunder we are still in a severe drought. On my run yesterday (to clarify, I only run up hills, my back hates flat running) I saw dying spicebush trees and many dead saplings, in the understoreys of Prospect Park. We need drenching rain. Microburst mayhem 🌪 A seconds-long downdraft ahead of a minutes-long rain shower threw down the fingerlime and broke its pot*. Hello, myoga buds! 💚 One of the best garden games on #thewindsorterrace in September and October is to dip my fingers into the soil in the myoga's pot and feel around for these firm flower buds. Yesterday I discovered four! . . Despite being cold-hardy here (USDA growing zone 7b-ish) I have found that in pots they rot over winter. I have experimented by dividing the plant and bringing one pot indoors, and leaving one out. Out always succumbs, so now I just bring the single pot in and hide it under my drawing desk - the plant is winter-dormant and disappears. (In-ground, we'd be fine, but container-conditions are extreme. A freeze prevents the pot from draining and that's death - it's not necessarily the cold that kills.) . . Myoga for supper. . . You can order your own myoga buds from @suzuki_farms_de - although they might sell out fast ($5.25/0.1lb). Dry air moved into the city after a week where being outdoors felt like being swaddled in warm, wet wool. And a box arrived at the door. Stuffed with a squeal-worthy collection of big, fat passionfruit, avocados, and lemons, from @rincontropics 🥑🍋🥭 The unsprayed fruit is always packed in shredded paper, so burrowing into the box feels like a treasure hunt 🎉🎊 It was just last year that I stumbled across Nick and his fruit-foraging and -growing business, thanks to a comment on a post by @floridafruitgeek - and that is how I got to taste pineapple guava (aka feijoa) again, for the first time since early childhood. And I cannot to wait to order a box of those, later this year - probably next month 💚 . . The drink yesterday evening on #thewindsorterrace was: The pulp of one big passionfruit (stirred to loosen it up a little), 2 oz gin, Thai basil, Fever Tree Lite tonic, and lots of ice. 1 - Fragrant and crunchy Fridge Slaw, buried in herbs from the terrace, to accompany last night's Southeast Asian-style (ish) meatballs. (The same seasonings went into each.) 2 - 73% humidity calls for ice 🧊 With some wine 😄 3 - the first cicadas! . . But why Fridge Slaw? In our neighborhood Thursdays are put-out-the-brown-compost-bin days for wee-hour Friday collection by @nyczerowaste - so I ransack the crisper drawer for any last, lurking vegetables whose peels or sad leaves might have to be tossed. (New Yorkers? You can request a brown bin - 311. Save one third of our waste from going to landfills. It takes some commitment and it needs to be cleaned, but there's no excuse for not doing it if the service is available in your zipcode 😘) . . Dressing: . 1 finger of ginger, microplaned 1 garlic clove, ditto 2 Tabelspoons fish sauce 2 Tablespoons lime juice 1 teaspoon sugar 1/ 2 teaspoons toasted sesame oil . Salad: . 6 oz mandolined red cabbage 4 celery ribs, thinly sliced 1 ear corn (kernels) 2 radishes, sliced into matchsticks 20 snap peas, strings removed 1 cup fresh mint, Thai basil, lemon basil, and Vietnamese coriander . . Place the dressing ingredients in a large bowl and mix. Toss in all the salad ingredients except the herbs and mix very well. Let sit for 15 in the fridge (it's nicest cold). The hotter and more humid the weather, the hotter and more humid the mapo tofu. I went for a walk-run yesterday three minutes before the sky opened. Storm cells formed so fast that the radar couldn't see them coming. I ran in the rain and got drenched. The paths were rivers. It was wonderful. And I stopped along the way to pick some prickly ash fruit- aka American Sichuan pepper. It is plump and green and zinging with flavor. So the mapo tofu happened. It is inhalable. We ate late. It had been a day 🕘 Toppings for toasted, garlic-rubbed baguette from @winnernyc collected on my early evening ramble through the neighborhood 🥖 Basil from #thewindsorterrace - chopped roughly and mixed with parmesan, pine nuts and olive oil, atop buffalo mozzarella from @russosnyc 🗽 Smoked shrimp (actually from the @bluehillcoopt in Maine) - tossed with lemon and sweetly sautéed garlic 🦐. Steamed-but-snappy broccoli with chile, salted anchovies and olive oil 🥦 And sardines, in case - also from Russo's where 6 other cans of ill-stacked sardines fell on my head 🤕 I ate the lioness's share of the baguette. It's (very) hot. Supper was cold. I braaied extra chicken the night before to shred and souse in a bath of vinegar with sugar, salt, chile, onion and raisins (channeling Sicily?). It's wonderful. Also the only recipe I used from it, ever - it went to a more appreciative home via the sidewalk, long ago 😆 I was always a Marcella girl. . I noticed the pot was staying moist longer than it should and suspected Issues 🙄 Out came the root ball, with lots of broken root pieces. Still the root rot issue. Damn. Fresh potting soil and cedar shavings (an experiment) were mixed and back in it went. Then a sweeping, a bagging, a washing and a wiping. Because supper was ready. . . 2 - 8.18pm. All clean. Ready for meatballs cooked in a pan-sauce of deconstructed pistou (a bushel of basil leaves from the terrace swirled through butter, garlic, half-and-half, and parmesan). Who needs rain when mushrooms come up in your thyme pot? This is the fourth time this summer that a cluster of these tan-spored mushrooms has appeared on #thewindsorterrace 🍄 But the other two fruitings were in a pot of lilies. I thought perhaps their spores may have arrived in the wood shavings that the bulbs were packed in. But the thyme? Next guess is potting soil. II use Black Gold. Is there a passionate mycophile working at @sungrohort seeding the bags? Because if these are the Gymnopilus that @inaturalistorg suggests they are, they contain psilocybin 🌈⭐️ Still, I won't be nibbling them in a hurry. Summer supper side dish, from the world and from #thewindsorterrace (herbs) 😊 and thanks to a shopping expedition to @baladymarket in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn: . 1 - coal-roasted tomatoes topped with grilled Bulgarian sheep's milk cheese, green (unripe, sour) grapes, summer savory, bee balm flowers, chile and olive oil. If it has curly leaves, it is Japanese shiso, perilla, etc. 👉🏽 Perilla frutesecens var. crispa. Every year I have to remind myself. To remember I say "crisp curls" to remember which is which. Does it matter? Names matter. As we know so well. . . Sesame leaf, then. Is what I call my frutescens variety. Mainly, I grow it to flavor soy sauce, which I then use to flavor other things. Like steamed eggs (No. 3) and steamed-then-dry-fried wax beans (No. 4 - with 5-spice powder, too). There's always a salad with supper. They are thrown together in a couple of minutes - messy, tangled, and luscious with seasonal treats. There is almost always a bed of arugula, and the dressing is usually just a slosh of extra virgin olive oil with a big pinch of salt.
