. There are many things I love about the slow crawl of autumn; spiced cider and chai, the baking of bread and the making of stews and casseroles, the orange and gold leaves falling, juxtaposed against a sky whose deep blue can only be captured in these waning days, with the growing cold biting into the wind. But best of all, I think, is the deeply pigmented red of Rhus copallinum. Winged sumac bright as a cardinal dots the landscape with its glabrous leaves and fleshy, winged stems. It is November and I am not ready to say goodbye to the sun for a season or to kiss the leaves farewell. And yet I think this little death is beautiful, I appreciate the warm-hued palette that smells of wet decay and cinnamon in the lovely alcove of my memory. I’m nostalgic for this time even asI feel the sadness and darkness creeping in as the sun shows itself less and less. This life is so joyful and tragic all at once. . . Some Rhus and former Rhus members I saw all across New England both wild and in gardens. 1-4: Rhus copallinum, the Shining Sumac, a very handsome medium sized shrub or small tree, native to much of Eastern North America, growing in the Arnold Srboretum. It's ripening berries were an excellent contrast to its glossy green leaves which were slowly starting to turn a beautiful scarlet red. 5&6: I was exploring a woodland in Maine when I came across a tree (or so I thought) that i had trouble id'ing. At first I thought it was an Ash but on further inspection and after grabbing it's leaves I could tell it certainly was not an Ash. It was in fact a climber climbing a dead tree. Now what climber native to the North Eastern US would be growing around this area and how did I have absolutely no clue what it was at first? It was not Boston Ivy or Virginia creeper or any other Vitaceae so I was quite stumped as to what this was. It then dawned on me, after my stomach dropped to the floor, that this hairy stemmed climber was the infamous Poison Ivy that causes very painful sores/blisters to almost anyone who touches it. I scrubbed my hands with soap at the nearest bathroom for half an hour and luckily escaped any damage. My girlfriend, Holli, asked how I could not have known about poison ivy considering my love of plants and all I could answer was that no one in their right mind grows it or wants anything to do with it in a garden setting in UK or Ireland so why bother learning about it. A mistake I will not make again. A former classmate of mine at Wisley did once tell to look with my eyes and not with my hands as I tend to be very touchy with new plants 🤦 7&8: Rhus chinensis, the Chinese Sumac, achieving heights I have not seen across the Atlantic 9: A passing photo of Rhus typhina, a native pioneer species across much of Eastern US, that turns a beautiful scarlet red in Autumn and lights up the roads besides motorways which is where this shrub is always seen. #tree #trees #woodyplants #rhus #toxicodendron #anacardiaceae #sumac #poisonivy #rhustyphina #rhuschinensis #rhuscopallinum #usa #newengland #gardens #toxicodendronradicans #autumnleaves #autumn #shrubs #shrub

CELEBRATING NATIVE SHRUBS: Winged Sumac (Rhus copallinum) is a large, suckering, deciduous shrub found throughout most of the eastern half of the United States. It grows 7 to 15 feet tall in sun and dry to moist soil. It has large compound leaves with a distinctive wing between the leaflets of the central stem. The foliage turns bright red in the fall, and it provides nourishment for the caterpillar of the Red-banded Hairstreak. Tiny, greenish-yellow flowers bloom in large panicles, with male and female flowers usually occurring on separate plants. They provide nectar for bees and butterflies. Pollinated female flowers produce showy, upright clusters of red, pubescent, berry-like drupes, which persist through the winter as food for wildlife. Winged Sumac is best suited for dry, informal, naturalized areas where it can be allowed to spread. It is especially valuable when massed on slopes for erosion control. It is generally considered too aggressive for use in shrub borders or foundation plantings. It may be browsed by deer. #mastergardener #celebratingnativeshrubs #wingedsumac #rhuscopallinum

Sweet potato sumac sorbet to celebrate the return of Hotumn, that season in the south when the calendar says 🍁 Fall 🍁 but the day time highs declare otherwise. Yes, sweet potato! The sugariness is a perfect match for the tart sumac, which I amplified by reducing four cups of sumac infused water down to one. This one’s definitely a keeper! Prime winged sumac. That's sour 🍋🍋🍋 Speaking of sour. I am looking for a pro-immigrant clothing or tote bag company or NGO to source some appropriate swag 🌱 Recommendations welcome. Why? Staten Island has lost its Republican sh%*t and is blasting a local migrant shelter with loudspeakers 😡 I love the borough's green spaces and I am also acutely aware that when I walk there my walking neighbors are quite often racist. I am white and red-haired and they probably think I'm one of them. I'm not. I am so ashamed and amazed that this is happening in NYC 🗽🗽🗽 . . . The berries from the local winged sumac (Rhus copallinum) are quite sour this year. I believe it's due to the lack of rain washing away the ascorbic acid that coats the outside of the berries. It's been very dry here on the MS Gulf Coast. But the sour berries sure did make a great juice, sometimes called sumac lemonade. Last year the juice I made didn't turn out as well. This year I used a 1:2 berry/ water ratio, (Always use cold water with this infusion), crushed the berries, and shook the jar quite a bit before straining it through muslin. And of course, I added honey. Delicious and everyone loved it! The berries are soaking again to see if I can get another batch. Expert forager, Steve “Wildman” Brill suggests using the juice in place lemon juice in salad dressings. Yum! I think I need to try that! #wingedsumac #rhuscopallinum #sumaclemonade

Rhus copallinum, the winged sumac, shining sumac, dwarf sumac or flameleaf sumac, is a species of flowering plant in the cashew family (Anacardiaceae) that is native to eastern North America. It's called "winged" sumac due to the little wings along the stems between the leaves. This species is valued for ornamental planting because of its lustrous dark green foliage which turns a brilliant orange-red in fall. The tiny, greenish-yellow flowers, borne in compact, terminal panicles, are followed by showy red clusters of berries which persist into the winter and attract wildlife. . . . . #sumac #rhuscopallinum #flameleaf #birdfood #wingedsumac #NCshrubbery #NCFlowers #FallColors #NCFall

Been thinking a lot about shrublands and how native and invasive shrubs tend to create very different habitats. Here I found two comparably sized patches of shrubs in a grassland: one is the native shining sumac (Rhus copallinum) and the other is the invasive autumn olive (Eleagnus umbellata). The first three photos are of the native sumac - first of the shrubs from a distance and then from sitting within the patch. The next three photos are the same but for the autumn olive. While they appear roughly similar from a distance, the mini-ecosystems within the shrubs are wildly different. The invasive autumn olive have just a few large stems and very very dense leaf cover that shades out and kills all the native vegetation beneath it. The only things growing beneath them are a few invasive brambles (Rubus parvifolius in this case). With the native sumacs on the other hand, there are a great number of smaller stems that create only moderate shade and allow the native warm season grasses and wildflowers to thrive between them, potentially creating much more habitat for ground-nesting critters and insects. While this is just one small example, it does a good job illustrating the subtle ways in which native plant species can contribute more habitat to a landscape than non-natives. #ecology #restorationecology #invasivespecies #plants #grasslands #rhuscopallinum #autumnolive

Seeds, glorious (re)seeds! These days, walking past the meadow each morning kicks out about 20-30 songbirds in the middle of breakfast. Food for wildlife, aesthetically pleasing, and next season’s free plants/weed control where the soil was recently disturbed. While it’s not bursting with blooms and buzzing with pollinators, there’s a lot going on in the meadow this time of year, so leave it be and let the leaves blow where they may. Bonus: last pic - got some leftover #rhuscopallinum #wingedsumac in the ground before the frosts along the south facing border where plants got especially scorched during the epic heat wave. They’ll thrive in these conditions, get up to 20’ tall, and throw just enough afternoon shade to provide a little respite from the heat waves to come. #fallmeadow #reseeding #selfsow #meadow #nativeplantsofpennsylvania #mativeplants #wildlifehabitat #leavetheleaves #birdfood

Over the years, we've made sumac-ade with the fruits of three of our four native sumac species. And as always, the very best is made with the fruits of winged sumac (Rhus copallinum), which is also, arguably, the most attractive species with its shiny fragrant leaves. All parts of the sumac are medicinal and are traditionally used to treat a wide range of ailments by Eastern Woodlands peoples, both internally and externally. The generic name for the sumac (in multiple Lenape dialects) describes how the red autumn leaves are mixed with tobacco. These are truly underappreciated native shrubs/trees! #wild_hudson_valley #rhuscopallinum #sumacade #wingedsumac #easternwoodlands #hudsonvalleynature

Chanterelle and okra perloo served with sumac butter. Typically what makes a good perloo, the Southern term* for a rice dish designed to fill the belly and trick the mind into believing that there is more of a scarce ingredient (usually chicken, but there are MANY variations) than is actually available, is the animal fat coating the rice during cooking and extending the flavor throughout the dish. In this vegan version, butter was warmed and infused with fresh sumac drupes, bay and bayberry leaves, and garlic and then drizzled over the completed dish. Seconds were served. 😋 *versions exist worldwide, other terms for similar dishes are pilaf, pilau, pilaw, polau, purloo, etc. #southernisasoutherndoes #edibleamelia #chanterelles #sumac #rhuscopallinum #perseaborbonia #bayberry #waxmyrtle #eatthesouth #eatwildfoods #anewsouth #floridaforaging #eatwildfood #knowyourflorida #comfortfood #perloo #pilau #sumacbutter #floridamushrooms #fullbellies #seconds

It’s sumac season! Have you ever used our native sumac, Rhus copallinum, to make sumac-ade? The drupes are covered in malic acid which has a tart, lemony flavor to it! On top of infusing them in water for sumac-ade, they can be dried and the carapace ground into a dried spice (it is a BEAUTIFUL ruby red color!), infused in sugar or used to make a sumac flavored jelly. Concerned about poisoned sumac? It’s in an entirely different genus (Toxicodendron vernix), it’s stems are not winged, it’s berries are WHITE and it is almost always found in wetlands while our edible winged sumac prefers it high and dry. #ixiachapter #floridanativeplantsociety #floridanativeplants #wingedsumac #rhuscopallinum #sumacseason #sumacade #anarcardiaceae

🌟Mmm mm good and so very good for you— Sumac lemonade! (No lemons.) —> 🌟This deciduous shrub, the Winged Sumac, Rhus copallinum (scroll to see the “wings” on the stem), had blooms a couple of weeks ago (scroll to see 🐝), so I kept checking back when able, watching for the berries to be harvest ready. 🌟Indigenous uses for the (edible) species of Sumac are often as lemonade— using no lemons, just the extremely tart and lemony flavor of the malic acid laiden berries, and as a seasoning (after drying then crushing the berries). Both are in this wonderful cookbook by @siouxchef @the_sioux_chef #thesiouxchefsindigenouskitchen ! They can also be used in tea, for making jelly, candy, and as dye. I chose honey as the sweetener— one of the options suggested by #seanshermansouixchef in his beautiful book. #wingedsumac #rhuscopallinum #shiningsumac #dwarfsumac #malicacid #sumaclemonade #indigenousfood #foragedfood #optoutsideifyoucan #floridanativeplants

Native Tree Spotlight: Winged Sumac, Shining Sumac, Flameleaf Sumac (Rhus copallinum) Winged sumac is a large, deciduous shrub or small tree (20-35 feet tall) native across most of Virginia. The leaves are shiny, pointed, and oval-shaped, occurring in opposing pairs to form pinnately compound leaves, and distinctive leafy "wings" extend along the midribs of the compound leaves. The pale yellow-green flowers blooming in July and August provide nectar for pollinators, and it serves as a larval host plant for Red-Banded Hairstreaks and Luna moths. Rhus copallinum is a beautiful ornamental, though it needs room to spread out. Don't confuse this native sumac with the invasive Ailanthus altissima, or Tree of Heaven, which isn't a sumac at all. Although there are similarities in the leaves, Tree of Heaven's leaves have a distinctive notch, or "thumb," at the base of each leaflet. In the fall, Rhus copallinum shows why one of its common names is flameleaf sumac, with striking burgundy red foliage and dense clusters of bright red berries that turn darker red as they persist into the winter. The berries provide winter food for many gamebirds, songbirds, and large and small mammals. 📷 : Phillip Merritt (Flickr) #plantnovatrees #plantnovanatives #nativevirginiatrees #nativevirginiaplants #celebratetrees #celebrationoftrees #plantingforbirds #plantingforwildlife #wingedsumac #shiningsumac #flameleafsumac #rhuscopallinum

Check out what’s thriving in season 2 at 3236 Kensington Ave. Regular weeding is planned through July, which will go a long way in ensuring the success of the space. It’s simple… identify what’s good that reseeded and what’s bad when they’re both small at this time of year. What’s small now will eventually set seed by the end of the season, filling in the gaps with free plants and leave less room for weeds to come up in season 3. Some of the top reseeders/spreaders so far here have been: #symphyotrichumlaeve #asclepiasincarnata #conocliniumcoelestinum #exhinaceapurpurea #symphyotrichumnovaeangliae and others. Others that are doing very well include #asclepiassyriaca #erygiumyuccifolium various #pycnanthemum #rhuscopallinum #liatrisspicata #rudbeckiafulgida #helianthusangustifolius #penstemondigitalis #deschampsiacespitosa. Since this site has no access to irrigation, very thankful for another wet spring.

Today's walk with a lovely group saw clouds and rain and sunshine and blue skies. And ended about 20 minutes ahead of a tiny but mean thunderstorm. Hi, March 👋🏽🌸☔️🌩☀️ And if you came to the walk, thank you! 🙏🏽 . . 1 - Handpies with mallow, chickweed and spinach. Seasoned with sheep cheese, sumac and Aleppo pepper (a riff on the Wintercress Pasty recipe in Forage, Harvest, Feast) 2 - Deviled eggs with pickled ramps and field garlic, tooped with forsythia, bittercress, ground ivy and chickweed 3 - White miso butter with field garlic 4 - The butter atop a field garlic-olive oil cracker (my go-to cracker recipe, see Mugwort Crackers in Forage, Harvest, Feast - substitute field garlic 😋) 5 - Fruit buns. With dried, fermented serviceberries (yup, see the Serviceberry chapter of FHF ❤ Both for how to make the dried fruit, and the fruit loaf recipe, which yeilds precisely 15 buns). The glaze was sugar and black cherry mahlab. 6 - Lilac honey 🍯 (infuse honey with lilac for two days - from last May) into Greek yogurt before straining overnight. To schmear on the buns. 7 - Wineberry (Staten Island) and mulberry (Red Hook) preserves to add to the schmear 8 - Le Picnic . . . The next scheduled walk is April 9th at Conference House Park on Staten Island. Veg tanning a coyote hide with sumac, in this case winged sumac. One time I saw a bald eagle eating a roadkill coyote and it was the most America thing ever. In the same vein, sumac tanned coyote leather is going to be the most Alabama thing ever, as we have both in abundance. This is my first attempt at veg tan and my entire education on the subject is watching @skillcult videos. As per his suggestion, I'm starting small with a hide I don't much care about, just to see what happens. At the very least, I think I will find out if this species of sumac is a rich enough tannin source for the task. #vegtan #barktanning #homesteadskills #coyotehunting #tanwhatyoukill #sumac #wingedsumac #rhuscopallinum

Hello Gorgeous! Check out the incredible fall color from these stunning flameleaf sumacs. They really pop against all the golds, greens, & browns. To appreciate the changing seasons in Houston, you often have to pay close attention to subtleties like the angle of sunlight. But not these beauties! They just scream to be noticed and seen! . These sumacs aren’t the poisonous kind and they’re indigenous to our region. They have a long list of native and folk medicine uses, but honestly, their beauty alone is enough to make them one of my favorite trees! . #rhuscopallinum #flameleafsumac #autumncolors #houstonnature #texastrees

Some really lovely landscaping picking up the fall colors of the Florida panhandle. 'Wild Florida Hedge' @lizzyjennydunn 👌 nice work! Winged sumac, American beautyberry and cabbage palm all growing in #drysoil and #shade 💚 This is a wonderful example of how #nativelandscaping can be beautiful, low maintenance, AND create habitat for wildlife. This is the winged sumac (rhus copallinum) and is one of the few Florida native plants that produce fall colors. The leaves, throughout the year, are usually green and in the fall months they start to turn a red color. These plants can grow up to 15 feet tall and make a great background plant in any Florida native plant garden or backyard. This plants is also the host plant for the Red-Banded Hairstreak caterpillar and the Luna moth. . . . #wingedsumac #rhuscopallinum #floridanativeplants #floridafallcolors #fallinflorida #fallnativeplants #plantphotography #nativeplantphotography #florida #redleaves #hundredacrehollows #photography #plantphoto #nature #naturephotography #naturelovers #plantsforpollinators #floridagardening #nativeplantgarden

📣 The plant walk I posted yesterday sold out last night, so I have added ONE MORE WALK and picnic (🤫) before I head for Cape Town. If you can still stagger around after Thursday's meal, join me on Friday the 26th at Brooklyn Bridge Park at 1pm for a Native Flavor stroll (served with a side of Spectacualr View). We will meet many of the plants that could/should/still don't define a regional cooking tradition. Our picnic will be a steaming pozole and featherlight cornbread. The first flavored with bayberry and native juniper, the second with spicebush 🍽 . . Please book via my bio link 👆🏽 . . These fruits are: berries (Boston ivy), pomes (crabapple and rosehip), and drupes (privet, Asiatic bittersweet and sumac). And they are the colors of now, collected from the tangled hedges and edges of the barrier islands that hug New York City's southern inlets and lagoons. With the sumac exception, all very invasive. Birds love 'em, which is part of the dispersal problem. They make good holiday wreaths and windowbox fillers... . . . #nativeflavor #northamericanflora #plantidentification #botany #edibleplants #learnplants #botanicalwalks #invasiveplants #invasivore #berries #drupes #pomes #fallfruit #fallforage #novemberforage #privet #ligustrumvulgare #rosehips #rosamultiflora #bittersweet #celsatrusorbiculatus #crabapples #malus #sumac #rhuscopallinum #forager #conservationforaging #newyorklife #foragewalksnyc #walkwithmarie

Fruits of the Winged Sumac (Rhus copallinum). The other day we were botanizing through the @arnold_arboretum and we noticed that the fruits of R. copallinum were very ‘wet’! After taking some pictures it became apparent that these fruits were secreting some sort of oils or lipids and covered the fruits with the gelatinous goop you can see here. After some digging through the literature we discovered that 1. These fruits are utilized by Native Americans in eastern North America as medicine and 2. There are over 12 identified compounds in these fruits, some of which have been shown to be affective against cancerous cell lines. However, we have not found any paper describing where these secretions come from, could be an interesting avenue of research if some one is interested! This is a good example of how we are all still learning everyday, and these small observations can sometimes lead to really interesting insights! #oil #fruit #rhus #rhuscopallinum #lipid #medicine #nativeamerican #nativeamericanheritagemonth #purple #goop #plants #botany #plantbiology #science #nature #outdoors #scicomm #letsbotanize #evolution #ecology #biology #STEM #Naturephotography #earthcapture

Repost from @66squarefeet • Sardines on hot buttered sourdough toast. Onions tossed with this year's winged sumac (Rhus copallinum) powder. Meyer lemon cheek. My reward for Monday's flurry of domestica: laundryvacuumingbathroomscrubbingcounterwashingdustingforageprocessingemailingwalkadminningmenuplanningterracetidyingandboxflattening 🌪 . . . . These sardines are Henry & Lisa's, in extra virgin olive oil, and "lightly smoked". $3.79 from Food Bazaaar in Red Hook. Meaty, firm, and good. While they are described as being preserved in the "traditional Portuguese method" the box doesn't actually say where they are processed. Which is unusual. They are distributed from Dover. . . No, this isn't a sponsored post. What do you all think of this really light-colored leather? I never vegetable tan grain-on leathers light colors, I guess because I don't want my bags and shoes to show dirt so easily. And because light-colored tanning is even more work and not all hides are suitable for it. But I'm kind of thinking lately that actually this might be kind of nice for some things? Thoughts?? Could you see whole deer hides tanned this color being nice? What do you think this kind of leather would be good for? I am in a marriage 👰🌿😂 with winged sumac so ultra light colored tannins are a big part of my life, but usually just for furs and leather dyeing experiments, & giving the natural tanning world the finger 🖕 for all its misconceived notions about light pigmented tannins. 😈 #squirrelleather #vegetabletannedsquirrelleather #lighttannins #bioregionalleather #rhuscopallinum

Finished sumac tea. It’s my theory that the cloudy mixture that settles to the bottom of the tea is the tannin binding with the proteins in the honey I add. If someone has a more scientific explanation I’d appreciate it. Generally tastes like rose flavored lemonade. I’d also be curious to know where I could find beer that uses sumac in the brewing process, seems like it would make a good sour ale. #foodscience #brewingscience #sumactea #wingedsumac #rhuscopallinum

Great visit back to a residential site today where we helped to conceptualize and adapt a naturally appropriate landscape plan on a waterfront north shore property. There was an adjacent lot next door that was about to be cleared. Knowing this we asked the new landowner if they would object to allowing us to transplant and save these trees in our project. Happy to report shining sumacs are alive and have been successfully transplanted to about 50 yards from where they sprouted. 😊🌳🍁 • • • #nativeplants #longislandnatives #coastal #rhus #northshore #rhuscopallinum #shiningsumac #wingedsumac

Happy October! Subtle signs of fall color change is starting to show. Winged sumac (Rhus copallinum) is one of the plants with the brightest fall color. The shiny leaves turn a brilliant red color. Female plants have red clusters of fruit that birds eat. The male flowers are a showy yellow and occur in mid to late summer. The nectar or pollen of the flowers attracts many kinds of insects, especially wasps, flies, and bees. The foliage is a food source for the caterpillars of several species of moths. You will need both a male and female plant if you want fruit. Winged sumac grows 9-15' x 9-15' in average to dry soils. It prefers full sun but will tolerate light shade. Great for #pollinators and wildlife. #rhuscopallinum #shiny #red #fallfoliage #forthebirds #pollenatorplants #plantnatives #youryardishabitat #droughttolerant #deerresistant #sciotogardens #nativeplantsnaturalbenefits #homegrownnationalpark

Collected some winged sumac berries to make a wild spice. We dry the seeds which are covered with red, sticky hairs. These hairs are coated with malic acid, which also occurs naturally in blackberries, cherries, grapes, and plums, and accounts for the tart flavor hiding beneath the sweet in those fruits. It’s the malic acid we’re after, obtained by drying the sumac berries and processing them to remove and pulverize the red covering into a beautiful, sparkly powder that makes food shine. There are over 250 species of sumac in the world. We use winged sumac, our local sumac that grows in the Pine Barrens and also at the shore. It’s a unique plant with a tropical look and an exotic flavor you’ll taste as a component in some of our dishes throughout the year. #WildSpice #LocalFlavor #WingedSumac #ShiningSumac #RhusCopallinum #WhatsWildThisWeek #Sumac

Starting in September winged sumac berries can be found in sandhills and other dry places around Florida. This book has so many interesting recipes like sumac lemonade, sumac candy, sumac jelly, and sumac syrup. The base ingredient in all of these recipes is sumac juice. I mashed the berries in hot water and will let the mixture soak over night. Tomorrow I'll strain the juice and try one of these recipies. #wingedsumac #sumac #rhuscopallinum #redsumac #sumacberries #shiningsumac #scarletsumac #forgaing #lovefl #ediblewildplants #9b #foodforest #floridagarden #floridathings #floridaesque #growyourownfood #forage #summerharvest #fallharvest #sandhills #sumaclemonade #malicacid
