The gardens are looking beautifully white at the moment, there are splashes of colour but you need to look for them. I’m enjoying the mix of white daffodils and Lunaria annua var. albiflora …..I hope this is the up to date name! I’ve got to that age where it’s hard to keep track of all the name changes. If you prefer a common name, it’s white honesty. #botanicallatin #namechanges #honesty #lunaria #prettywhite

April is national Pet Month – and I’d like to explain why Botanical Latin is essential when you have pets and a garden, because knowing whether garden plants are toxic to your pets is obviously vital to a happy gardener and pet owner! Using the correct Botanical Latin names for plants is not about showing off to your neighbours. It’s being sure that the plants in your garden are the ones you think they are. For example – “Marigolds are both tasty for tortoises to eat and toxic to them.” Confused? Try this version: “Marigolds, Calendula species, are tasty for tortoises to eat; but Marigolds, Tagetes spp, are toxic to them.” Now it makes sense! Both types of Marigold are sold as summer bedding plants and as companion plants for your vegetable garden, so be sure to buy the right one for your tortoise, or indeed for your rabbit and guinea pig! 🌻 🌿 🌻 #marigoldflower #marigoldflowers #tagetes #calendulaofficinalis #potmarigold #tortoisefood #botanicallatin #gardeningteacher #marieshallcross #petfriendlygarden #NationalPetMonth #NationalPetMonth2024 #petfriendlygardens

💐Do you buy yourself flowers??💐 I do! Here’s my surprise bouquet of the week with a little break down of the flower species (and their botanical Latin names). I love buying fresh flowers, but they don’t always have to be pricey - often your local grocery store will have sale bouquests that are gorgeous. I don’t spend a lot of time trying to make these arrangements fancy, just love having the color and scents. Plus, a few tips on how to keep your grocery store bouquet fresh. 💐 Set up a separate vase or a couple of containers with clean water that you can put your cleaned and freshly cut stems into right away after cut them first, then set up another vase for your arrangement. 💐 I think it’s also very nice to bring flowers if you’re invited over to someone’s house..but it’s not really nice to make them have to process the flowers and make the arrangement, expecially if they already have their hands full. Clean and process the bouquet first and put it in a vase for them..bring them that and now you have an appreciated gift! . . . #flowers #cutflowers #freshflowers #bouquet #buyyourselfflowers #giveyourselfflowers #weeklybouquet #surprisebouquet #flowerarrangement #flowerarranging #cutflower #botanical #botanicalwomen #botanicallatin #plantnames #plantid #plantidentification #gardening #cutflowergarden #growyourown #flowergarden

Not a particularly exciting photo to start this post, but I'm really proud of how hard we worked at weeding this Arctostaphylos uva-ursi/Kinnick kinnick that was full of runner grass. The head of the Church's gardening committee wanted a quote earlier this year to have it all torn out and replaced with rock. I refused to put in a quote. This groundcover is somehow surviving without any added water through the dry months, has people walking through it, and has never been weeded. It's doing pretty good, under the circumstances! Oh yeah, and we weeded, pruned, shaped and mulched the Church grounds as well.

Boa noite a todos! Como prometido, falaremos de etimologia. Selecionamos uma de vossas sugestões: Astrophea. Preparados? Yes they are both names for our much loved salad, pizza and soup item, the Tomato. 🍅 Xitomatl is the Aztec name – and it was Aztecs who first cultivated the wild pea sized tomato which is native to central and southern America As with nearly all botanical names, there have been some changes and amendments. But it was Linnaeus in the 17th century who formalised the tomato into Solanum lycopersicum, which describes the Tomato’s closeness to plants such as Potatoes and Deadly nightshade, which are also in the genus Solanum And, when naming all things botanical, Linnaeus formalised the tomato’s common name by calling the tomato Solanum lycopersicum – or sun loving wolf peach. Neat, huh! 𝕽𝖆𝖓𝖉𝖔𝖒 𝖋𝖆𝖈𝖙 And it was this familial closeness to a poisonous plant, plus the redness and shape of its fruit, that led suspicious northern Europeans in particular to call it Wolf peach. And some thought that eating it at the full moon would turn them into a werewolf…🌕 🐺🍑 Makes you look at your lunchtime salad in a whole new light, doesn’t it? 🍅 🐺🐺🐺 🍑🍑🍑 🍅 🍅 🍅 #solanumlycopersicum #Wolfpeach #plantfunfacts #plantfacts #botanicallatin #loveapple #planthistory #tomatogrowing #plewsgardendesign #gardeningteacher #marieshallcross #gardeningcourses #tomatoseason #tomatotuesday🍅 #plantfactfriday #tomatogarden

Have a plant with "microphylla" as part of its botanical name? It's undoubtably one with tiny leaves, especially compared with its relatives. 🌱 Take Salvia microphylla 'Hot Lips' (shown in first pic) for example. This popular hummingbird-attracting plant has much tinier leaves than its culinary relative, Salvia officinalis. Other plants with microphylla in their names include Buxus microphylla (Littleleaf boxwood), Pilea microphylla (Artillery plant), and Columnea microphylla (Goldfish plant). #micrphylla #botanicallatin #gardenterm #botanicalterms #gardentip #gardening101 #plantsmakeeverythingbetter #horticulture #plantlove

And you thought jasmine was imbibed as a cup of tea! Well it is of course, and a delightful drink too, but Jasmine is a Genus of about 200 plants within the Family Oleaceae, of which Olive trees are also a member. Hence my question as to whether you’d like Jasmine or Olives in your cocktail 😉 However, eating the berries from your Jasmine is not generally advised unless you know your plant (Botanical Latin essential) as some are toxic. And, personally I think that even those which are edible are not really tasty (too much seed and not enough fruit pulp) But it seems most of us are okay to drink up to 8 cups of Jasmine tea a day (note to self I am just about out of my Jasmine tea must buy some more!) 𝕽𝖆𝖓𝖉𝖔𝖒 𝖋𝖆𝖈𝖙 Jasminum officinale, common jasmine, is likely to have been one of the first plants to be cultivated specifically for its perfume. And no wonder, it is such an evocative heady scent, most fragrant in the evening. It is a temperate plant which is why it does well in our gardens. 🌸 🌸 🌸 🌸 🌸 🌸 🌸 🌸 🌸 #jasmineflower #plantfactfriday #jasminumofficinale #jasmineflowers #plantfunfacts #jasmineflowertea #plantfactsfriday #plantfacts #gardenconsultant #botanists #plewsgardendesign #gardeningknowhow #gardeningcoach #marieshallcross #gardeningwriter #jasmineflower🌸 #gardeningteacher #horticulturists #botanicallatin

I'm collecting notes for compiling publishing a little something about botanical names and other bits and pieces that fascinate me. Did you know that there are botanical naming standards for shapes, among other things? Squint and you'll see both ellipticus and linearis, in a chart from this: Systematics Association Committee for descriptive Biological Technology in Taxon, 11; 1962. I am not quite nerdy enough to start reading Taxon. 😂 Maybe next year? Maybe in my next life, especially if there are 25 hour days. Does anyone know what we were calling and turtle shell leaves, abs and splash, before such terms were in vogue? Should I start a newsletter or a Patreon for this project? #hoyaelliptica #botanicallatin #botanicalnames #bucketlist

🌿📚 This week's garden term celebrates the fascinating world of botanical Latin 🤓 Botanical Latin, also known as scientific or botanical nomenclature, is a specialized language used to name and categorize plants, and it's both interesting and incredibly useful. Here's why: 🌍🌼 Universal Language: Botanical Latin acts as a universal language for plant identification. No matter where you are in the world, the scientific name of a plant remains the same. It's like having a secret code that allows you to connect with fellow plant enthusiasts from all corners of the globe. 🌿📜 Rich History: The roots of Botanical Latin trace back centuries, with its origins dating back to Carl Linnaeus, the father of modern taxonomy. By learning a bit of this language, you're tapping into a wealth of botanical knowledge that has been passed down through generations of scientists and explorers. 🌸🔍 Precision and Accuracy: Botanical Latin names are carefully constructed to provide precise information about a plant's characteristics, family, and even its discoverer. Each name carries a wealth of meaning, allowing us to identify and understand plants with accuracy. It's like unlocking the secret language of plants and diving deeper into their unique qualities. 🌻🗣️ Better Plant Identification: By knowing the scientific name of a plant, you can effortlessly communicate with fellow gardeners, horticulturists, and experts about a specific species. It eliminates any confusion caused by common names that can vary from region to region. So, let's get started with today's term: Officinalis. 🌸💚 Officinalis is found as the second name in a two-part botanical name, and indicates that the plant is somehow useful. Typically, it's a herb used for medicinal or culinary purposes. Common examples include rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), asparagus (Asparagus officinalis), and calendula (Calendula officinalis). #BotanicalLatin #Plants #NatureLovers #horticulture #plantlove #botanicalterms #gardenterm #plantsmakeeverythingbetter #gardening101 #supportlocalbc #shoplocalyvr

Liriodendron tulipifera The tulip tree is native to Virginia and one of the earliest introductions to the British Isles from North America. John Harvey records it being introduced in 1638 and cultivated by Bishop Compton at Fulham Palace in 1688. The genus sits in the Magnoliaceae family which honours Pierre Magnol born on this day in 1638!
