Exciting things are poppi g up daily these days. A quick tour around the farm, we spotted many of our berry crops beginning to blossom, and our rhubarb is nearly ready for harvesting. With the berry crops beginning to flower, there is something else making its presence known…. Blackflies There is no coincidence here though. Why? Blackflies are the primary pollinators for blueberries. They show up just before the blooms open, and tend to vanish again once the flowers have faded. So while these pesky, biting insects may seem like a nuisance, just keep reminding yourself that it will all be worth it when blueberry season is in full swing! Want to learn a fun fact? This here I’m holding is called Philadelphia Fleabane. You might have it growing in your yard! Did you also know it’s edible and tastes similar to spinach? Aside for being used to attract pollinators, fleabane is a known wild edible. Leaves of fleabane are cooked (they can be eaten raw, but cooking will remove the small hairs on the leaves and stems) and served along other greens. The roots were either made into tea or chewed to treat colds and coughs. The smoke from incense made from the plant was inhaled to treat head colds. A snuff was made and sniffed also for head colds. It was mixed with other herbs to also treat headaches and inflammation of the nose and throat. If you mix Philadelphia Fleabane with tallow you can apply to soars for quick healing. I visited a forest after a long time. It was just to look at plants, especially to look at plants to share them with a group of people. Spring making a gentle exit, summer made its presence felt in the remaining flowers, in the thick mat of dry leaves on the forest floor, in the hardening of tender leaves of Kusum, in the ripe fruits lying among the leaves. Have you noticed how we try to find familiarity in the forest? Our mind looks for the familiar plants, animals, smells and sounds. My mind was trying hard to remember lessons from the Karnataka forests, to observe more, to unlearn and relearn. Whether we gain everything we hoped to or not, a visit to a forest alters the mind for a while, creates a longing you couldn't imagine being capable of. .
