It was a memorable tasting at Comm.G.B.Burlotto. Fabio showed us the whole range and some are bottles that we have never tried before. Be sure to read till the end for my comments of his top 3 Barolos. Starting with white, the 2022 Viridis Langhe Sauvignon is really nice with delicious fruit, great salinity and smooth texture. Next is the 2022 Dolcetto d’Alba. The wine was beautiful on the nose with great freshness on the palate. It’s a very pleasant wine yet with depth and complexity. By the way both the Viridis Langhe and Dolcetto d’Alba have just arrived in Thailand for the first time so do stop by and try them before they are sold out. The Pelaverga and Aves Barbera d’Alba have always been our favourites and the 2022 was yummy as always with superb balance that is the style of this famous estate. Fabio has also poured us the 2022 Langhe Freisa which we have tried for the first time. And guys, we loved it a lot! It was juicy with many layers of flavour. The grape Freisa is very rare and is thought to be the parent of the noble Nebbiolo. We don’t import this wine yet but we definitely will! The last three Cru Barolos, the Castelletto, Monvigliero and Cannubi from 2020, blew us away with grace and intensity. Like all top producers, Fabio has somehow managed to magically combine the impossible - extreme fineness and great concentration. The Monvigliero is undoubtedly the most special with its unique aroma and flavour. It’s hard to deny that this is THE bottle that put Verduno on the Barolo map beside the big 5 village. And guess what… we were extremely lucky that Fabio has taken a bottle of 2016 Monvigliero for our dinner after the tasting. It was sooo good. Next and last stop in Piedmont was at Comm.G.B.Burlotto. This is a historical estate and the pioneer who played a huge part in putting Barolo on the world fine wine map. G.B. or Giovan Battista Burlotto is the great great grandfather of Fabio, the current generation, and was one of the first people who started making quality wine in Barolo. He founded the estate in 1950 and, with his superb wines, became the official wine supplier of the Royal House of Savoy. He worked meticulously to make the best wines and to promote the region. Finally, he was given the title “Commendatore” (equivalent to knighthood) as a recognition for his great contributions. Fabio continued the family legacy and the estate is highly regarded. Their flagship, the Monvigliero Barolo, is a cult with soaring demand and, according to a recent article by Gambero Rosso, is one of the Barolos with the steepest price increase in recent years. Tasting wines right at the winery is always special especially with our brand new partner like Enzo Boglietti. The wines were all amazing and we are more confident than before about the quality and people behind. Linda, the daughter of Enzo, guided us through the whole range and here are some of the bottles. The 2022 Dolcetto d’Alba was super fresh with juicy texture. Personally, this is a strong candidate for my favourite Dolcetto. For the Barbera range, the 2022 Barbera d’Alba was rich with smooth body but what blew us away was the single vineyard Vigna dei Romani Barbera d’Alba with its concentration and great length. The 2022 Langhe Nebbiolo was just delicious with red fruits, leather and roasted coffee. It’s not a Barolo but close enough. Things got more serious with the first Barolo which is a blend of different plot in La Morra. Very aromatic with velvety tannin. A great Barolo that showed beautifully the style of the estate. Next we tasted the single vineyard Barolo. The 2019 Fossati and 2020 Case Nere showed depth and great structure. The 2020 Brunate was wow and there’s no doubt that this was the wine that has kicked off their success story. We ended the tasting with the 2005 Barolo Riserva and saw how beautifully the wine from Enzo Boglietti has aged. Barolo has always been one of our favourite wines and we are extremely excited with our new partner, Enzo Boglietti, from the famous commune of La Morra. Their wines are super refined, artistic and full of character. La Morra is known to be home of the most elegant and aromatic Barolos of all. The town itself is situated on one of the highest spot in north Barolo and, for visitors, this is best place to enjoy the stunningly beautiful landscape of the region. Enzo started making his own wine in 1991 from the family vineyard. Quantity was minuscule but they were blessed with a great terroir. This first tiny 2.5 ha plot is situated in the renowned Brunate MGA which is arguably one of the most famous crus in La Morra. After the first vintage, they quickly rose to fame and were being named as the rising star of the modernist Barolo. Today, their approach is less extreme and a combination of the best of modernist and traditionalist. They now own 21 ha of vineyard including the top MGAs like Brunate, Fossati and Case Nere in La Morra plus Arione in Serralunga d’Alba. We visited the winery on our Italy trip and were very impressed with the quality of every bottle. These are vibrant wines full of energy. Ones that electrifies our love for great bottles. La Bioca is very special. After the tour of the vineyard and cellar with Igor and Olga, I can understand why. I can feel that both of them have a strong connection with the region Barolo, a great passion for great wines and, most importantly, they know what they are doing. The winery was founded in 2012 (just like us!) so it was quite young compared to most of the producers in Barolo. There are many historical and famous names here, hence the name “La Bioca” which translates to “Tough Head” in Piedmontese. Igor, the winemaker, fully respects the tradition and terroir but he also has his ideas. He is constantly experiencing new ideas like amphoras and hybrid vessels (stainless and wooden in 1) while doing his best to fine-tune all the elements to make the best wine possible in their unique style. La Bioca wine combines the structure of top Barolos with great drinkability. Due to limited time, we tasted only 4 wines at the estate; we‘ll try the rest at Vinitaly in a few days. The Langhe Rosses Bianca, a rare grape in the region, was super fresh with salinity and very good texture. The Vigna Bussia Chardonnay is delicious as always but more crisp and leaner than the 2018 that we have imported. The grapes for this wine came from vines planted in the lower part of the parcel that they own in the famous Bussia MGA. They could have planted Nebbiolo here to make Barolo and sell for a much higher price but no. Igor told us that this part is more suitable for Chardonnay. The last 2 bottles were both Nebbiolo d’Alba from San Sebastiano vineyard that I have written in the previous post. The bottle with the black label was fermented and aged in amphora while the one with the classic label was fermented and aged in hybrid cask. Both are super delicious and, in blind tasting, I wouldn’t be surprised if anybody would guess that these are Barolos. The black label has smoother tannin and more pronounced acidity. The classic label has more structure and intensity. It was a great tasting with Igor showing the map and explaining the techniques that he has used to craft each of his wines. Very informative and, more importantly, the wines are super good!
After the German trip, it’s time for Italy and the first stop was La Bioca in Barolo. I have always enjoyed wines from this area but, with this visit, I felt in love with the region itself. The landscape is stunningly beautiful and the food super delicious! We met with Igor and Olga from La Bioca on a cloudy morning but luckily we had good sunshine during our tour through the vineyards. We made several stops including at the famous cru Ravera and Bussia. Nevertheless the vineyard that impressed me most was the San Sebastiano, a vineyard in Monforte d’Alba which lies just outside the territory of Barolo DOCG. San Sebastiano is a single vineyard on a beautiful slope and soil rich with limestone perfect for the Nebbiolo grape. Before global warming, the area used to be too cold to produce good enough grapes so it was excluded from the Barolo classification. Nowadays, as you may all felt, the earth is getting much warmer and San Sebastiano’s grapes have improved greatly (I will write more about the wines in our next post). The trend about warm sites being too warm and cool sites getting better is becoming clearer to us after our meeting with many winemakers this year especially in Italy where the climate is generally warmer than Germany and France. So guys. Global Warming is real serious and we have to do our part if we want to keep drinking good wines! Everyone, who came to Swirl and asked me for a recommendation of good dry Riesling, would hear the name Seehof. Personally, this is one of the best-kept secret in Germany. We met with Florian Fauth of Seehof at his winery for our last appointment before the Prowein. You might know from me that Florian’s sister, Julia, is no other than Klaus Peter Keller’s wife. Anyway, being related to a famous winemaker won’t do you any good if the wines you produces aren’t great. But in this case, the wines are extremely good - bone dry and complex with superb structure. The wine possesses salinity and energy that can only come from a good terroir plus fine winemaker skills. We did a tour through Florian’s vineyards where he owns some of the best parcel in one of Rheinhessen’s most famous wine village - Westhof. This includes, Kirschspiel and Morstein. Florian also owns a parcel in the bigger and lesser-known Steingrube but guess what… the Steingrube parcel that he plants his vines are in the prime location, sandwiched just between Morstein and Brunnenhäuschen which is the 2 most famous single vineyards in Westhofen, if not, the whole Rheinhessen region. We learn something new every time we visit the vineyards and talk with the winemaker. It’s something you couldn’t find in books or on internet. After this trip, we are super exciting to be back at Swirl and introduce you to these amazing wines. Oh boy. I wish I could just stay here and drink until nightfall. Weather-wise perfect. Wine-wise perfect. The Sauvignon Blanc was super refreshing. The Chardanny & Weißburgunder was juicy. Both the Johanishof and Kapellchen Riesling is light, fruity and mineral. The Kalkmergel Riesling has great structure and length from the limestone soil. But my favorite of the day has to be the Riesling Kabinett which is simply a perfect wine for a beautiful sunny like this. For the top flight, we had GGs versus the special *** range. The GG is made from vines grown in a single grand cru plot and it emphasize the special character of each soil and microclimate. The *** range is a blend of the best (and same) clone grown on different plots and it represents the character of the vine itself. This is a very interesting concept and it’s like the conquest between mothernature and its inhibitants. The result? Both were delicious and we couldn’t stop smiling and sipping. Knipser is my favourite place to visit. I remember the first time when Volker said that he will bring some wine to taste and we ended up with more than 20 bottles. It was unforgettable. This time, we did a tour through the vineyards and in the cellar. Like always, we ended the trip with wines. Since the weather was so nice, we sat outside in the beautiful garden enjoying the early summer breeze, blooming flowers and nice bottles. All the time that we were there, beautiful cars keep pulling in and leaving with trunks loaded with cases of wines. I bet that’s why, it’s difficult to find Knipser wine outside of Germany and Europe. When I was living in Germany, I have asked many wine people I met - wine shop owners, sommeliers and private collectors - who their favourite German producer is. And guess what… most of the time the answer was Knipser. Just try a glass and a bottle and you will get the idea why! Tasting the wines after the vineyard tour is awesome. It felt more connected and we appreciated more what’s in the glass. The sparkling Riesling was amazing - fresh and mineral with fine delicate bubbles. The comparison between Rebholz’s 2 main soil type with their mid-range Rieslings “Vom Roliegenden” and “Von Buntsandstein is eye-opening. Both showed clearly the effect of different soil and micro-climate. This is what we love about this noble white grape - it’s super terroir-expressive. We also tried 3 vintages of Kastanienbusch. The 2022 is still tight but with precise and razor-sharp acidity. The 2016 was softer and richer with very good texture. The 2011 is simple delicious with complexity and great balance plus a long lingering mineral finish. Rebholz is well-known for their Rieslings but their Spätburgunder aka Pinot Noir is also top notch. The limestone soil is very similar to Burgundy and the resulting wines have good depth and structure. Their Chardonnay is just as amazing with freshness and creamy texture. Last but not least, Rebholz’s Gewürztraminer is a must-try and definitely one of our most favourite Gewürztraminer of all time. The best way to understand a wine is to come and see the actual vineyard. A picture may say a thousand words but a real life scenic view of the Kastanienbusch grand cru tells much more. We visited Rebholz and Hansjörg took us to this majestic perfectly south-facing slope with ancient Rotligend soil that is super rare in the region. The Kastanienbusch is protected on 3 sides by the Palatinate forest giving this famous grand cru site a special micro climate that is cooler than the surrounding area but with enough sunshine. The family owns the best parcel on top of the hill with old vines and the most stony soil. This is where their top Riesling GG come from. We did a tour in their cellar as well and was very impressed - full respect to nature, minimal intervention and 100% passion for great wines. Rieslings, Pinot Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Noir and everything else from Rebholz are top level with mineral, structure and excellent balance. If you haven’t yet tried their wines, you need to in order to get an impression of the extremely high quality that top German estates are now offering. Amazing wines as always - from entry level to grand cru. We tried the 2023s, some just bottled and some still barrel samples, and the quality level is very high. This is not an easy vintage with very wet spring but top estates like Van Volxem seems to know a way to cruise through. The 2023 have more tension and a good dose of complexity, yet with the typical animated character that is so unique to them. One of our favourite is definitely the Geisberg Riesling Kabinett. The wine put smiles on our face and we just couldn’t stop sipping. We can feel Roman’s passion to make the best wines every time we met him… Not just him, but from the whole team at Van Volxem. Perfection is the aim. And finally we made it to Van Volxem’s new facility which includes offices, cellars and beautiful tasting rooms. The view was stunning and the buildings were designed to fit in harmoniously with the surroundings. Moreover, the whole complex is self-sustaining meaning that they produce their own electricity and burn zero fossil fuel in order to be as close as possible to the nature. The vineyards around looks beautiful and we can see the famous Scharzhofberg in the distance. In the summer, classical concerts are held regularly in the garden and I already love the idea of sitting here sipping great wines while listening to Rachmaninoff piano concerto no. 2. It’s this combination of passion, perfection, respect and a great sense of aesthetic that make Van Volxem’s wines - especially the Rieslings - so special. We tried the barrel samples of Egon Müller’s new vintage 2023 and a 1989 treasure. The Scharzhof Riesling has refreshing acidity. The Kabinett is just delicious and we could drink this anytime anywhere. The Spätlese has great concentration and finest. The Auslese is even more intense with superb length and perfect balance. And when we thought it couldn’t get any better, the auction Auslese Goldcapsule just blew us away with phenomenal quality. To top it all, Veronika went into the cellar to fetch us a bottle of 1989 Auslese Goldcapsule. The bottle is messy with dust and dirt but the wine inside was a flawless masterpiece! I have tried many aged Rieslings but this 35-years-old Egon Müller is just next level - freshness and maturity in perfect harmony. One of the highlights of this trip was… the visit to Egon Müller! And, guess what! We were incredibly lucky to meet the legendary man himself, Egon Müller IV! A big thank you to Veronika for the tour to the renowned Scharzhofberg rising majestically just behind the estate. It was freezing cold high up in the vineyards but it was best to drink the wine in the place where it came from. Seeing the super steep slopes, feeling the strong cold wind and sensing the reflected sunlight from the Mosel, helped us appreciate even more the wine that we had in our glasses. Axel took us to his best parcel, the Helden vineyard which is located on a perfect south-facing slope. This is one of the best plots in the village of Lieser in the middle Mosel - the viticulture heart of the regions with all the famous single vineyards. We have been working with Axel of Weingut Pauly since the very beginning. The quality was impressive then and keeps getting better and better. The 2023 that we have tasted on this trip was just wow with ripe yet crisp Mosel acidity and salty mineral. Most importantly, despite the increasing recognition he has been receiving lately, Axel is still the same guy with so much passion for good Rieslings. We are super happy for being able to bring his wines to Thailand and will be waiting eagerly to introducing these fantastic nectar to you all at Swirl! When you dig deep enough into the wines of the Loire, you will unavoidably stumble upon some mythical bottles that are must-try. Thierry Germain’s La Marginale is one of these. Coming from Bordeaux, Thierry is used to aging wine in oak barrel to add texture and complexity. La Marginal is the wine that sees the longest aging - up to 24 months in a mix of older barrels and foudres. This is his most complex and age-worthy wine which, with enough cellaring, combines both richness and grace. Over the years, Thierry had been constantly fine-tuning the balance between oak and fruit until perfection. The 2019 is undoubtedly one of our favourite with incredibly pristine, vivid fruit, along with a deep, rich structure and silky-fine tannins. One of the hottest Beaujolais guy is arriving! Yann Bertrand is the name that French wine geeks and professionals have been gossiping about. Many said that he’s “The” young winemaker to keep an eye on. We have tried his wine many times before and we loved it. Sadly, his production is so small that we couldn’t get any allocation for Thailand until this year! Grew up in Fleurie (the Queen of the Beaujolais Crus), Yann never thought he would become a winemaker. He briefly enrolled in commerce at a local university. When applying for local jobs, he noted that he was the son of a vigneron and soon found himself working at wine bars and wine shops, surrounded by passionate wine geeks and artisan winemakers who often came to deliver wine themselves. After some time, he had finally decided that making great wines is what he wants to pursue. Returning home to Beaujolais, Yann got to meet and learn from the incredible group of iconic winemakers like Jean Foillard and Yvon Metras of the Gang of Four as well as the behind-the-scenes guru Jacques Neauport who was the quiet right-hand to the legendary Jules Chauvet. These invaluable advises plus his personal knack for Gamay, Yann has been turning out amazing wines that are sought after. The entire Domaine Les Bertrands encompasses one 7.5 hectare vineyard, mostly in Fleurie, with a bit over the line in Morgon. The vineyard is loaded with ancient vines–the youngest are 30 years old, with the oldest vines at 110 years of age. His parents had been slowly moving in the direction of organic viticulture since taking over the family domaine in 1992; in 2013, the entire vineyard was certified organic. Additionally, Yann took on 1.5 hectare to farm on his own using biodynamic principles and created two new cuvées d’exception made in the neo-Beaujolais style of his well-known neighbors. This was one of our absolute favourite from the “20 Wines 20 Grapes” wine tasting last month. A great wine with enormous potential. The wine kept evolving after hours of aeration. Intense nose with ripe fruits, lemon, lemon zest and spices with fine smoky toasty bouquet. Creamy texture with perfectly ripe fruits on the palate balanced harmoniously by the refreshing acidity and great minerality. Deliciously long and unforgettable finish. Alte Reben means old vines and this wine is made from Julien Huber’s oldest plot. At this age, we recommend at least 2 hours of decanting and you will be amazed. Coming straight from the prestigious Comm. G.B. Burlotto, Monvigliero Barolo DOCG is a 100% Nebbiolo masterpiece that will transport you to the heart of Italian winemaking. This symbolic vineyard in Verduno, known for its elegance, captures the ancient traditions and refined flavors of the region. It showcases the luxurious and serene qualities found in Baudelaire's texts, with hints of Levantine smokehouse aromas and a rich yet delicate flavor profile, culminating in a pure and memorable experience. Situated in the northern part of Barolo near the Tanaro river, the microclimate of the Verduno vineyard is influenced by its unique location. The soil, composed of fossilized Marls of Sant'Agata, creates a balanced combination of silt, clay, and sand layers. The active limestone content is approximately 11%. Monvigliero encompasses three blocks in the central amphitheater of the hill, spanning a total area of 2.02 hectares. The vineyard was planted at different times, starting from 1958 to 2015, using a massale selection from their own vineyards and selected clones grafted onto Riparia, 420A, and Kober 5BB rootstocks. The vines are trained in the Guyot style and enjoy a south-facing exposure at a maximum altitude of 300 meters. The harvest is meticulously carried out by hand to ensure the fruit's integrity, with a careful selection of grapes that are transported in 20 kg boxes to the cellar. The winemaking process involves whole cluster vinification, where grapes are not destemmed, and fermented in open French oak vats. This is followed by two months of submerged cap maceration. To preserve the stalks, the grapes are gently foot pressed. Malolactic fermentation takes place in Slavonian and Allier oak barrels of 35-50 hectoliters, followed by a maturation period of approximately 3 years. Bottling typically occurs in the summer without fining or filtration, and the wine rests in the cellar for at least 9 months before being released to the market.
