Semester 2 is done and although I'm keeping busy with my dissertation, I also love having some free time to dive back into this account! Starting back strong with one of my all-time favourite women from history: Gesina ter Borch. Gesina was born in Deventer in 1631 and lived most of her life in Zwolle. Although she came from a family of artists, as far as we know the majority of her art was produced in an amateur context. Though she was perhaps best known in her lifetime as a model for her half-brother's paintings (image 9), Gesina was also an exceptionally skilled artist. The majority of her drawings and watercolours survive in the form of 3 albums. I love Gesina's watercolours; the vivid colours and lively scenes draw you right in. The characters feel as though they're about to leap off the page. The variety of scenes she depicts is fascinating - everything from self-portraits to comedy to allegorical scenes to detailed studies and more. I'm quite surprised there haven't been more historical study on her and her art; she provides a unique perspective on so many different types of people. Gesina also seemed to have had boundless creativity - alongside her art, she also wrote poetry! My two favourites are 'Staande Non' (image 3) and 'Twee vrouwen die was aanstampen' (image 4). I also love that she's one of the few seventeenth-century female artists that we have multiple portraits of, both self-portraits and appearances in her half-brother's paintings. It makes you feel as though you 'know' Gesina a little better. 💫The Lincoln Highway - Amor Towles💫 I had some sort of short circuit in the year 2021. I have actually listened to this book - at least my records say I have. But I’ve just returned to this novel - and NOTHING felt familiar. What a mystery it is for my crazy brain!! BUT it’s been such a treat to read this delightful book, even if it’s for the second time. I’m truly hoping it was just a recording error on my part. I’ll be super bummed if it happens again with another book! A novel about a cross-country adventure between brothers, Emmett and Billy, searching for a new start in life that becomes riddled with sidetracks and unsuspecting characters that weave themselves tightly to these endearing Watson boys. I loved the flavor of all the players along with the geography and history mixed in. I fell in love with Billy and the way he looked at the world. I felt compelled to reach out and hug him. His innocence and curiosity spoke to me. His thirst for history and facts pulled me in. I had such a solid vision in my imagination of how he looked, with his precocious smile, tousled hair, and his treasured backpack. As a fan of Amor Towles’ books, this one has a special charm. This story is packed with the ingredients of what good fiction does, and should, have to offer. From my bookshelf to yours…🥂

The study of Virginia Harris In 1926 the class colors were Lavender and White In 1923 Her Freshman Class Had 14 boys and 28 girls for a total of 42! 18 girls had long hair 10 girls had bobbed hair. The Senior Class Ring Girls were white gold with a basket setting with a black enamel face with a white gold Indian head on one side. On one side there was a gold 2 and on the other side a 6. For the year ‘26. The boys’ ring was free gold with a flat setting, a black enamel face with a white gold Indian head. 26 was carved in the gold on each side of the ring! 💫The Indifferent Stars Above - Daniel James Brown💫 The Harrowing Saga of the Donner Party I almost can’t with this book. I’m at a loss for words. It’s awful and so hard to read but also so addicting. I can’t stop thinking about it. Yesterday I went for a hike with some girlfriends and we stood on the Bonneville Shoreline trail, east of the Great Salt Lake. I stood looking at the view below in a completely different way. I will never see the valley the same after reading this book. The stretches of salt leading west now seem to possess an eerie reverence. The entire time I was reading the book, my soul kept shouting, “STOP and turn around.” With the perspective of living in this climate, and witnessing the accumulation of snow we can receive during heavy storm total years, the Donner Party disaster is obvious. It was gut wrenching reading about the poor decisions and mistakes the emigrants made from the onset of their departure from Illinois. The epilogue validated all of my thoughts about this book and the final paragraph left me in tears. This book is something else. I’ve read a lot of agonizing stories, but this is at the top of my list. The history of the Party’s experience, the description of the personal relationships between its members, and the science and facts that Daniel James Brown weaves into the story is fascinating. Read this. But you’ve been warned … From my bookshelf to yours…🥂 PS - to lighten the mood - taking pictures with books is very challenging. April 14, 1865, Good Friday, five days after the surrender of General Lee to Union General Ulysses S. Grant, President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated at Ford’s Theater by the actor John Wilkes Booth. Lincoln had only been sworn into office for a second term when Booth’s actions occurred. Lincoln had guided the nation through four tumultuous years of civil war, issuing the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 and in January of 1865 witnessed Congress outlawing slavery through the 13th Amendment with the House voting in favor of the bill. Jayaprakash Narayan, born in 1902 in Sitab Diyara, India, emerged as a prominent figure in Indian politics and ideology. Educated in the United States, where he embraced Marxism, he returned to India in 1929 and aligned with the Indian National Congress. Narayan faced imprisonment in 1932 for his involvement in civil disobedience against British rule and played a pivotal role in establishing the Congress Socialist Party, advocating for Indian independence. During World War II, he opposed Indian support for Britain, leading to another arrest in 1939. Following a daring escape, he briefly pursued violent resistance against the government. Post-war, he urged Congress leaders to adopt a more aggressive stance against British rule. In 1948, disillusioned with party politics, he co-founded the Praja Socialist Party. Transitioning away from traditional politics, Narayan dedicated himself to the Bhoodan Yajna Movement, advocating for land distribution among the landless. Despite his shift, Narayan remained engaged in political discourse, proposing reforms for Indian governance in 1959. In 1974, he emerged as a vocal critic of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's allegedly corrupt and authoritarian regime, resulting in imprisonment during the national emergency declared by Gandhi. His health deteriorated in prison, and although released after five months, he never fully recovered. With Gandhi's defeat in 1977, Narayan advised the Janata party on forming the new administration, marking the end of an era in Indian politics.
