He opposed the King's separation from the Catholic Church and refused to accept the King as Supreme Head of the Church of England and the annulment of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon. More's resignation ultimately led to his being tried for treason in 1535 where he was convicted on perjured testimony and beheaded. More famously stood up to his old friend Henry VIII when he made himself head of the Church of England and dissolved his own marriage to Catherine of Aragon. This weekend has been one for the books! I had the pleasure of attending Amber and Max’s beautiful wedding shower, celebrating love and commitment with good friends. I also joined the Young Adult Meeting at St. Thomas More, where we connected with friends, planned exciting events, and explored the rich history of our church. Learning and seeing the history of the church from over 75 years was amazing! Day 7 of walking the Pilgrims way. "Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?" The day started off early with us leaving our B&B at 06:30hrs and luckily the kind owner of the B&B ( big shout out to the Alma Inn ) had cooked us some bacon, sausage and egg sandwiches the day before, which were waiting for us at reception. We left Chilham and walked up towards Old wives lees to the sound of early morning birds chirping before walking through a sleepy apple orchard with panoramic views of Kent. We continued walking through Chartham Hatch and into Harbledown where Canterbury finally came into view in the distance. On entering Canterbury it was weird seeing such packed and busy streets , which we hadn't seen since leaving London. Before reaching the end of our pilgrimage at Canterbury Cathedral we paid a visit to St Dunstan's Church where lies the skull of St Thomas More, who like St Thomas Becket would also go on to be Lord Chancellor of England and then persecuted for not siding with the monarch over there faith. We then went on to St Thomas of Canterbury RC Church where we were in time to celebrate the Eucharist and see the relics of St Thomas Becket himself. It was then time to bring this pilgrimage to a close, next stop, Canterbury cathedral, where after getting our passport stamped, we arrived just in time for a guided tour and talk on St Thomas Becket and his martyrdom, talk about good timing. After leaving the cathedral we couldn't resist paying a visit to the cat cafe, and although I can't be certain St Becket would have stopped here, it was a great way to unwind and relax after walking just over 100 miles. My top tips that I have taken away from this journey are to pack light, spend time and money making sure your footwear and socks and as you want them, and in my personal opinion, limit days walking to 12miles or less where you can. Happy Easter bank holiday. This is the church dedicated to St Dunstan, formerly the Archbishop of Canterbury (959-988) and canonised as a saint in 1029. This is one of three churches of Canterbury that date back to Anglo Saxon period; St Mildred’s and St Martin’s being the others. St Dunstan was a most popular saint in this island and one of the stories about him was his confrontation with the Devil, where he caught the Fallen Angel by the nose with his tongs. A good thing since this is also April Fool’s Day! 👿 A stain glass window represents St Duncan alongside Sir Thomas More and Lanfranc. It is a church with a great history and worthy of a visit. Important to note that in Catholic tradition Thomas More is a saint, while in Anglican history, he is lucky to keep his knighthood. The wooden ceiling and the 15th century belfry are wonderful additions; it houses the oldest working bell in England, made around 1325.
