Infinity symbol has, relatively recently, become the symbol of the autism spectrum community. Together with the letter "T" and the sacred heart, it looks like a page from some alchemical volume. (left hand, inner side; tattooed on me by myself) 🔥 Also the sacred heart is 1.5 years healed🫀 . The semicolon is a symbol of strength and hope. It is supposed to give encouragement in moments of doubt. For people with depression, it means that they have not yet put the final dot in the story that is their life. They have started treatment and are trying to regain peace, energy, strength, and joy in everyday life. When my client contacted me for this tattoo, she gave me a lot of creative freedom. She mentioned she wanted a sunflower and semicolon and wanted a mental health theme. She also mentioned she liked a shattered light bulb design I did last fall. With that, I ran with it. The shattered light bulb represents the bulb is no longer adapted to the current life running through it. Butterflies undergo a tremendous transformation to become the beautiful creatures they are. I added the semi colon and incorporated it into a daisy. Daisies symbolize new beginnings and joy. I left off a couple petals to symbolically portray that sometimes we are changed by our mental health struggles - but we are still beautiful. There is also the serotonin molecule with three different flowers for its structure. Additionally, I added the left hemisphere of the brain which controls our language and speech. A couple months ago Mom texted she wanted to get a tattoo 😳 After I picked up my jaw off the floor, I thought it would be fun to take her (I had to witness it!) I’ll never forget her response to my first tattoo, “do you know that’s permanent?” 🤣 #duh Anyway, C.J. and I decided to take her for Mother’s Day and each get one! Mom wanted the semicolon because it symbolizes hope and perseverance. It represents resilience for those who face mental health challenges. This week is mental health awareness... to say that mental health is a taboo subject is an understatement, so many more people are taking their end into their own hands but yet the accepting of depression and suicide and why they do it, is just not there to say to people that's struggling. "It's ok, I got you." "I see you struggling" Let's talk about it," etc I can be one of the 1st people to admit that I was extremely oblivious of suicide, until one day, I received a call that my Dad had taken his life. This is never a conversation anyone ever wants to hear, I'd rather my dad get help, speak to anyone, do anything, then die alone. Dad never told us his struggles, and even to this day, I still have 1000s question's. After loosing my dad and my pooch Jess within a few years of eachother, I just went into a melt down, I hadn't dealt with my dad's death and then when my pooch died, both deaths hit me at the same time. I hit the lowest rock bottom there is. I didn't speak to anyone, I hid my antidepressants so I didn't have to take them, I just sat there drinking... alot. I tried to take my life twice, and both times, I've been extremely thankful to still be here now. I'm glad that Kim realised I wasn't taking my meds, I'm glad that I got help, I never want to be back there again, I take my meds every night now with no prompting. If there is anyone who is struggling and doesn't want to talk to someone they know, I am here. My inbox is always open. Please don't suffer alone, we can suffer together until you're ready to take that step on your own to confront your struggles and demons. I still have so far to go until I'm mentally where I want to be. However, each day I try my hardest. May is Mental Health Awareness Month. I struggle with anxiety, depression, post traumatic stress disorder, and dermatillomania. Lately I’ve been struggling with my skin picking. With a stubborn zit and annoying unibrow hairs, my old habits have come back. I’ve been having skin breakouts since I stopped my birth control, my skin rashes have returned, and I’m not happy with my hair color (hoping to fix it soon). Breathe. Constantly rubbing my hands over my flaws won’t make them go away. I’ve never been good with patience. It’s so easy to damage ourselves when we think we’re fixing ourselves. I’m okay. It's another "Story Time with Kyle." A special one to boot as this was a long time coming. I've wanted to get a semicolon tattoo for a long time, just to always have that reminder to making it through the mental health struggles I've had (and still have even now). I also wanted to personalize the tattoo in some way that was more specific to me and my journey. My love of burlesque eventually produced that "Eureka!" moment with the realization that you could very easily form a pastie and tassel into the semicolon shape. In a lot of ways, burlesque has been such an important part of how I've gotten here to this point; the combination was just too perfect. By this time, my burlesque fandom had allowed me to cross paths with Doris Night, who also happens to be a tattoo artist with the kind of style I was looking for. After telling her my idea, she sent me back exactly what I had pictured in my head, and so began me trying to figure out when I could travel to Arkansas to get it done. Initially, I was thinking summer 2020, which didn't happen for obvious reasons. The next opportunity came on my burlesque road trip in May 2022, as I traveled to Arkansas after the Show-Me Burlesque Festival. The fates conspired again, and unfortunately, due to circumstances out of Doris's control, the appointment had to be cancelled. Well, finally, the stars aligned this year as Doris came to Houston as a guest artist for Cry Later Tattoo this past weekend, and as soon as I heard the news it was happening, I got booked as quickly as possible and hoped third time would be the charm. I frankly could not have asked for a better first tattoo experience, nor a better artist for this. I think I enjoyed just getting to share time and talking with Doris as much as finally getting the tattoo itself, and I found watching the whole process from prep to finish pretty fascinating. A huge thank you to Doris/Ashley for being awesome as both artist and friend, to Cry Later Tattoo for hosting her! My first ever ink. Done by the lovely, superbly skilled handpoke artist @avatarupgrade last Sunday. Pain level during the tattooing was comparable to my cat making biscuits on me a little too hard. Plucking my eyebrows hurts more. Altogether it was a very pleasant and safe experience, and I will go again. Turns out it's difficult to take good photos of the arm of your dominant(ish) hand (I'm almost ambidextrous, but some things aren't easy). Hence, the photo sucks. I wanted a tattoo with a snail, semicolon and "memento vivere" for years, but couldn't figure out just how to draw it so that it makes sense as a tattoo.
